Chapter 169: Chapter 161 Heart Knot

"Why would I lie to you?" Uncle Lu earnestly nodded.

Ah, though my second brother is generally a good person, he is sometimes too rigidly committed to "keeping his word" and inflexible. Considering how he took the initiative on this issue, wouldn’t our grandfather also be unable to scold him when they meet?

But what if he does get scolded? Currently, the second branch of the family doesn’t have a grandson yet. As the eldest brother, he has always been cared for by his younger brother. How many favors has our branch of the family received from the second branch over the years? How could he not consider their needs now?

So, he decided to be the "bad guy." If our grandfather and the third brother and his wife want to scold someone, let them scold him. He’s not afraid; he knows he’s done nothing wrong.

"The current policy allows for only one child, but when you and your sister-in-law gave Aiguo up for adoption, I recall you didn’t report the death of the third brother’s child. Let’s just give the child a name now and register him under the third brother’s name, so later on, Aiguo’s wife can have another child under his name."

Uncle Lu had been mulling over this plan since Aiguo acknowledged his biological parents.

Uncle Lu’s footsteps halted as he seriously considered the possibility.

Uncle Lu didn’t disturb him, standing silently to the side and smoking.

"Alright," Uncle Lu figured it out and his mood suddenly lightened.

"Why not strike while the iron is hot? I’ll go see Uncle Four this afternoon to make the amendments to the family register." Uncle Lu was also very happy.

"Yes, and let’s also invite a few of the elders from the clan as well as the eldest brother-in-law, Aidang, and Aimin’s families to join us for some fun, and have them cook several more bowls tonight for a drink." Uncle Lu nodded.

"Sure, we should indeed celebrate. I’ll have your sister-in-law and the wives of Aidang and Aimin come over early this afternoon to help," Uncle Lu immediately cheered up, changed directions, and walked away, "I’ll go notify some of the elder clansmen now."

A smile appeared on Uncle Lu’s face, and he quickened his pace. He had to tell Aibing to seize the opportunity to head to Xiejiacun to inform his two daughters, and incidentally, bring them back. Such significant news, if not shared with them immediately, wouldn’t they blame him with their fiery tempers? But two families, would one tricycle be enough?

--

That afternoon, when Aijiao and Sister Aimei’s entire families arrived, they brought the New Year’s gifts as well.

As soon as the sisters entered, they headed straight to Aunt Lu Yun, all filled with joy.

Aunt Lu Yun was busy with Xia Yuan and Zhang Cai in the kitchen preparing the evening meal. Even Lu Yun was by the stove, joining in the fun.

After greetings, Aijiao started looking for chores to do. Sister Aimei first ran to embrace Aunt Lu Yun, cooing, "It’s about time dad figured it out, old-fashioned as he is. This should have been done long ago."

"Go on, you’re the least respectful at home. Be careful your father hears you and isn’t pleased," Aunt Lu Yun said this, but her face was smiling.

Sister Aimei, though ranked in the middle at home, was especially cherished, in the end all because of past events which made her "benefit by accident." Even later, Aibing didn’t receive as much attention as her. Hence, she developed a bold and clear-cut temperament of love and hate.

"I’m not afraid. My dad isn’t that petty," Sister Aimei wasn’t concerned that Uncle Lu would actually be upset with her. Except for that one time, had her parents ever really thwarted her from childhood, ever really shown her an angry face? Otherwise, would she have been able to resist Aiguo like that before?

"You just bully those who are easy to bully," Aunt Lu Yun said in an annoyed tone, tapping her forehead several times, grunting, "Really, we’ve spoiled you since you were a child."

"Still complaining, huh? You guys don’t tell me anything, and then you snap at me violently over it," Lu Aimei pursed her lips sullenly, looking at Lu Erbo’s wife. That beating had been a knot in her heart for many years, and only now did she dare to speak up, "You tell me, would it have been necessary if you had told me earlier?"

"You have the nerve to blame your father and me? Remember how awful the things you said were? Aibing wasn’t even as sour and jealous as you."

Lu Erbo’s wife glared at her sideways. She had regretted her actions not long after, feeling anxious from seeing her second daughter’s swollen face for several days. However, she ultimately couldn’t bring herself to lower her pride, also fearing that reconciling would negate the punishment.

"If it weren’t for you, could Aiguo have failed to even finish middle school? He was the best at studies in our family, and without that incident, getting into a university would have been no issue."

Xia Yuan glanced hesitantly at her mother-in-law and her second aunt-in-law, then decided to reveal the truth about the past. Aunt San had been gone for so many years; it wasn’t right to still protect her reputation by letting Lu Aimei carry such a heavy burden.

"Mom, actually, it really wasn’t Erjie’s fault that Aiguo dropped out."

"Don’t speak for her. You have no idea how relentless her mouth was back then. If it wasn’t her fault, whose fault would it be?" Lu Erbo’s wife recalled the past and smacked Lu Aimei fiercely.

The smack made Lu Aimei wince in pain, but she still said, "Xia Yuan, don’t comfort me. It really was my fault. Even now, I regret it. I ruined our family’s chance at having a college student."

"Grandma, Er Gu, Mom actually wasn’t wrong, it really wasn’t Er Gu’s fault. Actually, it was Third Grandma who refused to let Dad come here for meals. The food Dad brought back, she would secretly throw it away. She wouldn’t eat it herself, nor would she let Dad eat it, claiming that you were deceiving him with ulterior motives."

Lu Yun interjected; it was better for her to say this—Third Grandma was technically her mother’s "mother-in-law."

Clang.

The enamel bowl fell from Lu Erbo’s wife’s hand to the floor, and her complexion instantly changed.

Everyone else stopped what they were doing and turned to look.

"Really? Did Third Aunt really say and do that?" Lu Aimei asked through clenched teeth, directing her question at Xia Yuan.

"Yes," Xia Yuan nodded, glancing at Lu Yun.

"She’s just too much, way too much." Lu Aimei was so full of rage she didn’t know where to direct it. Her face turned red, and even when wanting to curse, she couldn’t find the words. She paced in place, muttering under her breath.

"It’s infuriating, truly infuriating. How could she dare after how my parents treated her? Ulterior motives? Ha, it’s more like we don’t know who actually had them."

"Mom, say something, won’t you?"

Lu Aijiao, along with Xia Yuan and Zhang Cai, watched as Lu Erbo’s wife stood there with her lips tightly sealed, maintaining her pose as if to grab something, neither moving nor speaking, and they all grew apprehensive.

Lu Yun was also worriedly watching Lu Erbo’s wife, thinking she might need to pop an emergency pill into her mouth at any sign of trouble.

The so-called emergency pill was a powerful remedy effective against nearly all urgent medical conditions. Its efficacy was enormous but it was also not easy to produce. The required ingredients were extremely precious, and despite her efforts to produce it hundreds of times, the success rate was still only sixty percent.

This was incredible compared to her production of other elixirs, where she could initially achieve success rates of over seventy percent which easily reached one hundred percent after a few more attempts.
