Chapter 159: Chapter 153 A Mess
"I’ll give it some more thought," Shitou understood the implications in Lu Yun’s words and after mulling them over for a moment, he finally nodded solemnly with a complicated look.
"What’s there to think about? Dad and mom would definitely want you to go to school and take the high school exam. Anyone, even a no-brainer, would know what’s the best choice, you surely aren’t clueless, right?"
Lu Yun deliberately teased Shitou with her words.
"..."
The little girl’s gotten bolder, Shitou thought as he gave Lu Yun a cool glance, "What’s your plan then?"
"Actually, it’s not impossible to do both. You just have to register at a high school back home and then come back here to study on your own. Or, when the time comes, you could join a tutoring class here in Haicheng and go back to your hometown for the exam."
Lu Yun laughed and heaved a sigh, "No wonder you used to read books so fast and never forget anything you’ve read. You actually have 3S talent! I only have 2S talent, even with such a huge cheating device. It’s simply unfair; I can’t help but be green with envy. With talent like yours, just attending high school and taking the entrance exam should be a piece of cake for you."
Then she snickered to herself, "Besides, when I looked through the collection of books I had gathered, I realized I had even collected all the previous years’ exam papers. Though, I doubt you’d notice any difference with or without them."
"Register?" He hadn’t considered this before, so it hadn’t occurred to him. Now Shitou was thoroughly convinced in his heart about applying for the military academy.
"Right. Didn’t dad come back the other day all excited, saying he wanted to donate money and goods to the school, the orphanage, and various departments in the area... as a way to give back to society? We can’t just donate to Haicheng and forget about our own hometown, can we?"
Having broached the subject, Lu Yun had never doubted that she could persuade Shitou; she naturally had such confidence when it came to dad, mom, and Shitou.
"Let’s go, and give me that book to look at," Shitou nodded.
"The exam papers?" Lu Yun deliberately misunderstood Shitou’s intention, which made him too lazy to glare at her. He didn’t say anything, just looked at her with a smile that was not quite a smile.
"Here." Lu Yun placed the book in Shitou’s hand and pouted with disapproval, "With that kind of personality, you’re really not likable. If you find a girlfriend in the future, she’s definitely going to complain about you."
Shitou didn’t make a sound, but his eyebrows furrowed, and he walked ahead in silence.
"What’s there to be angry about if I’m not wrong? Girls don’t like boys who are petty."
Lu Yun watched Shitou stride away, tossed her head, and talked to herself. The thought of Shitou having a girlfriend someday made her feel distinctly uncomfortable... as if there was a fishbone stuck in her throat.
Lu Yun stopped in her tracks, puzzled for a moment, "No worries, later on, I’ll definitely help you out by picking a good girl."
Whether it was an illusion or not, after saying this, Lu Yun felt the discomfort in her heart not only didn’t fade but intensified. She stood dazed for a while, feeling her mind a tangle of confusion she couldn’t unravel, which gave her a headache... Lu Yun shook her head again, what was all this about? In the end, she decided that if she couldn’t figure it out, it was better not to think about it at all...
Shitou, who had returned to the room first, noticed that Lu Yun was still not coming up and actually already regretted his way of handling the situation. He felt a bit uneasy and kept an eye on the door, worried. How come he got upset just because of something Xiaoyun said?
He frowned and didn’t look away from his book until he heard some movement at the door, pretending to read with his back turned to the doorway; yet, his entire attention was on what was happening behind him.
Lu Yun paused for a moment, glanced at Shitou who was turned away from her, and after a bit of internal struggle, went back to the inner room without saying a word. Both had a restless night and didn’t sleep well. When they stepped out of their room the next day, they bumped into Xia Yuan and Lu Aiguo, both of whom were surprised to see their dark circles.
"What were you up to last night, ending up with panda eyes, both of you?"
Lu Yun and Shitou choked for a second, exchanged a look, and wrinkled their brows simultaneously. It was Lu Yun who quickly came up with a response, using the conversation about convincing Shitou to go to college from the day before as an excuse.
As soon as they heard about the idea of Shitou taking the college entrance exam, something that would affect his future, Lu Aiguo and Xia Yuan became deeply concerned. After asking about it carefully, Lu Aiguo said resolutely to Shitou, "Don’t hesitate any longer, let’s aim for college. What’s the big deal about making money? Even if we get affected and can’t make as much anymore, we already have enough saved up to live on for a lifetime."
"Exactly, why overthink it? Why do I want Xiaoyun to go to college? Isn’t it because I want her to have a good future? Now that we have a way to let Shitou take the college entrance exam, no matter how hard it is, we have to overcome it."
"Mm-hm," Shitou nodded. A lightbulb went off in his head, was this what he was agonizing over all of last night? Yes, that must be it...
With the idea set that Shitou should go to college, Lu Aiguo and Xia Yuan were even more anxious than Shitou himself. They looked at the date; it was only the 28th today, and the plan had been to start selling the vegetables on February 1st. Lu Aiguo was getting impatient and headed straight to the storage room downstairs, filled with green vegetables and fruits.
During breakfast, he announced at the dining table that they would start selling vegetables from today until the 7th of February. On the 8th of February, which is the 22nd day of the lunar calendar, they would take a truck back to their hometown to properly prepare for the Lunar New Year.
Selling vegetables? Even though it was winter, this was the south, and the market was not short of vegetables—cabbage, cauliflower, lettuce, kale, white radishes, red radishes, spinach, mustard greens... everything one could wish for was available.
But when everyone saw the storage room fully packed with summer and autumn vegetables and fruits like loofah, bitter gourd, cucumber, Buddha’s hand squash, pumpkin, amaranth, water spinach, bamboo shoots, tomatoes, eggplants, green beans, string beans, Chinese yam, hyacinth beans, water caltrops, and lotus root,
And fruits like strawberries, bananas, grapes, and chestnuts, everyone’s eyes nearly popped out of their sockets.
All these were vegetables and fruits normally seen in the summer and autumn.
"Were all these sent by that person as well? He sure has a wide network, doesn’t he?" Lu Aijiao swallowed hard.
"That’s right, they were just delivered last night," Lu Aiguo nodded with a nonchalant smile, "Once these are sold, we can tell him and he’ll send more."
Lu Aiguo quickly assigned tasks to everyone.
Since only two tricycles were left at home, he paired up Xie Jiang with Wu Tan and Lin Weisheng with Zhang Ming, sending each pair to sell vegetables and fruits in different areas.
The prices for the produce were set after a discussion between Lu Aiguo, Shitou, Xia Yuan, and Lu Yun, finally agreeing on raising them by about threefold.
