Chapter 147: Chapter 142 Opposition
The first time they drove back, Lu Aiguo, Lin Weisheng, and Zhang Ming were unfamiliar with the route, stopping frequently to ask for directions. It was already after two in the afternoon by the time they finally arrived at the township.
"Isn’t that my brother-in-law and my father-in-law?" It was Zhang Ming, with his sharp eyes, who first spotted Uncle Lu and Lu Aibing, wrapped in cotton-padded jackets, who had been waiting by the roadside in the township all morning.
"That’s definitely Uncle and Aibing, hey, we’ve finally made it." Lu Aiguo looked closer and couldn’t help but laugh.
"Indeed, we’ve finally made it here," everyone sighed with relief. Lin Weisheng quickly parked the car in front of the two men and was the first to jump out, "Uncle, Aibing."
"Uncle, Aibing."
"Father-in-law, brother-in-law."
Lu Aiguo and Zhang Ming also quickly got out of the car.
"You’ve finally arrived, we were about to freeze to death," Lu Aibing stamped his feet. Seeing the three of them getting out of the car, he went up to each of them and gave them a playful punch. Then his eyes shone as he went up to touch the truck, his face full of envy. "What a beautiful truck."
"Of course, this is the truck that Brother Aiguo and Lin Weisheng just drove back from N City the day before yesterday," Zhang Ming boasted proudly.
"All of you can drive now? Third brother, after the New Year, maybe I should go to Haicheng too?" Lu Aibing looked at his brother-in-law’s cocky demeanor, and began to regret not having gone with them to Haicheng earlier.
"Let’s get in the car first, we can talk while we’re on the road."
Lu Aiguo took a look at Lu Aibing’s eager expression and called out to everyone. They all got back into the car, with Lin Weisheng driving and Uncle sitting in the front giving directions.
"Why don’t we take Aibing with us after a few days? After the New Year, we’ll see who can take over the family’s land and give it to them. Then we’ll have my sister and her husband come along too." Lu Aiguo had already been planning, Uncle and Auntie had been so kind to him, he would definitely pull some strings for Aibing. If he was eating meat, at the very least he should make sure Aibing had some soup, right?
"Sounds good, if they want to go, they can go," Uncle agreed with a nod.
"I’m definitely willing. If it weren’t for you saying there were too many people, I would have gone already," Aibing looked at Uncle reproachfully. "Look, now everyone has learned to drive, and I’m the only one left green with envy."
Everyone laughed at his comment, and Lu Aiguo teasingly scolded him, "There will be plenty of opportunities to learn to drive later. You’re complaining about Uncle? When you get to Haicheng, you better behave properly, do whatever I tell you to do, or watch out, I might give you a smack."
"That’s not fair. Dad, why won’t you say something to him?" Aibing shrank back, a look of woe on his face, "Could it be that only the third brother is his own flesh and blood, and I was picked up from the side of the road?"
"Hahaha."
They all burst into laughter again.
"I somehow feel that way too," Lu Aiguo said with a big laugh before deliberately teasing Aibing.
A look of helplessness flickered in Uncle’s eyes and his face twitched almost imperceptibly, but he quickly returned to his normal expression. He took out his smoking pipe, lit up, and took a fierce puff, glancing sideways at Aibing, "If you were half as good as your third brother, I’d be relieved."
Nobody noticed Uncle’s fleeting expression, and as he finished speaking, they all laughed heartily again. Aibing pouted, "My head is not as smart as his; I won’t compare with him. Isn’t it just about being obedient? When have I ever not listened to him?"
"And have I ever led you astray?" Lu Aiguo patted his shoulder firmly.
"No, that hasn’t happened," said Lu Aibing as he scratched his head and shook his head before perking up immediately.
"Well, that settles it," Lu Aiguo laughed as well.
With someone guiding them, the speed of the truck increased considerably, and soon, following Lu Erbo’s directions, they took a turn at an inconspicuous spot onto a plainly repaired road.
When they arrived at the location, Lu Aiguo and the others saw a row of temporary buildings that had already been erected, with Zhang Cai and Lu Aimei’s family also helping out.
After greeting and settling down quickly, Lu Aiguo, Lu Erbo, and the construction team’s leader, Yan Du, found an empty room to discuss matters, only taking a break for dinner when Lu Aimei personally brought in bowls of noodles for the three of them. The discussion didn’t pause until around seven or eight in the evening.
Back in the sleeping quarters of the temporary housing—everyone was the same, all sleeping on large communal beds. One room could accommodate six people. There weren’t that many in their room; it was just Lu Aiguo, Lu Aibing, and Lu Erbo. Because it was too late to go back, Lu Erbo decided to make do and spend the night here.
Lu Aiguo whispered to him, recounting in detail the various things that had happened over the past few days. Although they had been in constant communication through letters, it was not possible to convey everything so comprehensively and meticulously.
Lu Erbo nodded as he listened, occasionally interjecting with a sentence or two to provide some sound advice. However, when he heard that others couldn’t replicate their potato chips and that Lu Aiguo wanted to expand the business to the Magic Capital, planning on sending Wu Tan over there first, he frowned.
"In my opinion, you shouldn’t rush to send Wu Tan to the Magic Capital yet. Haicheng is one thing, but the waters of the Magic Capital are much deeper. Why would you have something that others don’t? It’s fine if you’re just making a modest living in Haicheng. So, for now, your business shouldn’t expand too much, nor should it be too conspicuous," he advised.
Lu Aiguo was somewhat taken aback, "But if we don’t go to the Magic Capital and don’t expand the business, then isn’t this place... a waste of effort?"
"Why would it be a waste? You still have business in Haicheng, don’t you? Since it’s more cost-effective to produce with your own machines than to buy in, just produce it yourself. Besides, this place is secluded, ordinary people won’t be able to find it," said Lu Erbo straightforwardly. This was precisely what he had been thinking, which was why he agreed to have Lu Aiguo set up the factory when he wrote to him.
"However, in that case, I don’t think you’ll need that many people, so there’s no need to call Aibing and his wife to Haicheng. Just have them help out here at the factory. It’s better to have Wu Tan stay at the warehouse. If possible, have him bring his mother along. Someone will be there to watch over the place, and with Wu Tan, you won’t have to worry about not having anyone around when the trucks come, and he can help with deliveries during the day," Lu Erbo suggested.
Lu Aiguo was at a loss for words. He furrowed his brows, thought for a moment, and ultimately sighed and nodded in agreement.
Perhaps he had been too hasty. It was fortunate that any surplus potato chips produced here could be stored in Xiaoyun’s large warehouse, and the family in Haicheng wouldn’t have to labor over making potato chips anymore.
"Xia Yuan is pregnant, two months along," Lu Aiguo finally mentioned Xia Yuan’s pregnancy, unable to hide his excitement and agitation.
"Xia Yuan’s pregnant?" Lu Erbo stood up all at once, his expression filled with excitement, "Good, good... When the time comes, I’ll have your Aunt go over to help with the confinement and take care of the baby."
Lu Erbo’s hand trembled as he reached for his smoking pipe, his shaking hands struggling to strike the matches. Lu Aiguo quickly went over to help him light up his smoke. He had been excited for the entire day and night, and his hands had already steadied. Seeing Erbo like this, he felt that his behavior during the day wasn’t embarrassing at all.
"But if Aunt goes over to my place then, and with Aibing and his wife here helping out, what will you do alone at home?" Lu Aiguo shook his head, "When the time comes, my aunt can lend a hand, and if worst comes to worst, Wu Tan’s mother is there too."
"How could I not manage on my own? Confinement and taking care of a baby are big deals, not to be neglected. Your aunt has to work, and Wu Tan’s mother needs to watch over the warehouse. Both of them are busy; they can’t devote their full attention to taking care of your wife and baby. Your Aunt would be heartbroken if she wasn’t called, and she wouldn’t be content just staying at home," said Lu Erbo emphatically, rejecting Lu Aiguo’s suggestion, "Don’t argue with me on this; you have to listen to me."
"Alright then," Lu Aiguo conceded, finding sense in his words, "When Xia Yuan gives birth, we’ll have Aunt come over and help out for a month or two during her confinement."
Upon hearing this, Lu Erbo nodded and didn’t say any more.
