Chapter 137: Chapter 132 Off-season Vegetables

In their new home’s courtyard, Lu Aiguo and Shitou had even set aside some land to plant flowers and vegetables because there was plenty of open space. Lu Yun looked and clamored to plant a few fruit trees as well, but there were no saplings readily available, so they all agreed that they’d have to go back to their hometown and dig some up from the mountain to plant.

Now that they had a house to live in, and it was close to the school, nobody expressed a desire to live in the house in Jingtou Village once it was finished.

So, Lu Yun adjusted the design plans for that place in a very timely manner. After thinking about it, she decided to keep the first and the second floors entirely for living purposes. Besides leaving space for a kitchen and dining area, she also set aside an area to be used as a public entertainment zone. The rest of the space was divided into rooms of varying sizes, each with a balcony and separate bathroom.

This design was extremely unimaginable from the perspective of that era. Back then, it was uncommon for every room in a regular household to have a separate bathroom. Usually, if there was a bathroom on each floor, it was considered good, and many people still felt fortunate just to have one bathroom on the first floor so that they didn’t have to use public toilets outside.

Lu Yun considered that rooms with separate bathrooms would be the most appealing for future rentals. If everything could be set up properly from the start, it would not only ensure comfort for relatives from their hometown but also save the trouble of having to redo it later.

Watching her parents gape in surprise, Lu Yun couldn’t help but laugh, "This way is so convenient. Isn’t it better if we can make everyone more comfortable?"

Indeed, one would only realize how convenient it was to live in a suite with its own bathroom after experiencing it.

Lu Aiguo and Xia Yuan were immediately enlightened. Then they also approved of Lu Yun’s request to reserve the necessary pipe slots on each floor.

With their approval, Shitou naturally had no objections either.

As the discussion moved to the house in Jingtou Village, it was inevitable that they brought up the topic of coming up with new snacks to sell after the house was completed and their relatives arrived from their hometown.

"I remember there are still a lot of chestnuts and yams left over. These days, chestnuts and yams haven’t been selling well. It would be great if we could turn these two items into snacks for sale."

Lu Aiguo frowned, remembering that there had been a sizeable harvest of these two items on the mountain, but it was a pity they found few takers when they tried selling them. Together, these items hadn’t sold more than a hundred pounds recently.

"Making red bean yam cakes and chestnut cakes would be good."

It was a shame they weren’t cinnamons, otherwise, selling roasted chestnuts in winter would have been great.

But Lu Yun wasn’t worried at all about the market for these two items; they were quality goods, and if people didn’t appreciate them now, she would just keep them in her space until eventually there would come a day when everyone would like them.

"Now it’s chestnut season, so it’s normal that they don’t fetch a good price because they’re not rare outside. Let’s wait until winter to see, maybe then more people will be interested in buying," Shitou wasn’t in a hurry either, with Lu Yun’s space available to store things, what was there to worry about?

"Right, why didn’t we think to stock up on fresh vegetables and sell them in winter?" Lu Aiguo slapped his thigh, "This area around the city is all farmland, and aside from supplying the city’s vegetable shops, there’s a lot of surplus. The other day, Zhou Yi was lamenting how difficult it was to get a good price for greens. The farmers only eat the freshest and most tender parts at home, discarding the less perfect parts."

"Dad, you really do have a knack for business," Lu Yun giggled, Shitou had just started the topic, and Dad was already thinking of off-season vegetables.

"It’s indeed a great idea," Xia Yuan also smiled, "That way, it will be convenient for us to have vegetables in winter too."

"So tomorrow let’s go make the arrangements, and from now on, every time we deliver goods, we can bring back a truckload. By the time we sell before New Year’s, it will certainly sell well. The price will be multiple times higher too." Shitou joined in with a laugh.

"It’s a shame we didn’t think of it sooner; otherwise, we could have stocked up even more," Lu Aiguo said, laughing and shaking his head with a sigh.

"You should be satisfied, having an idea like that is already impressive," Xia Yuan smiled too.

"Actually, even if I think of it in winter, it won’t be a problem. My big warehouse is full of all sorts of vegetables," Lu Yun said nonchalantly.

"So your contribution is the biggest, right?" Xia Yuan teased as she tapped Lu Yun’s forehead with a laugh.

"She is indeed a major contributor," Lu Aiguo chimed in to support Lu Yun, who smiled proudly at her mother.

"There are also lots of wild fruits left. Those can be made into fruit tanghulu with malt sugar to sell," Lu Yun glanced over the space.

"Fruit tanghulu? I’ve only heard of candied haw tanghulu. Can other fruits be used for tanghulu too?" Xia Yuan, Lu Aiguo, and Shitou were all surprised.

"Of course. If hawthorns work, why not other fruits?" Lu Yun replied as if it were the most obvious thing in the world.

The various wild fruits harvested from the mountains weren’t in large quantities, but combined, they amounted to quite a bit.

The appearance of the wild fruits wasn’t great, and they couldn’t compare at all with the huge quantities of fruits from all seasons stored in Lu Yun’s space. After coming to Haicheng, everyone had grown used to eating the better tasting and looking fruits that Lu Yun brought out from her space.

Seeing those wild fruits, Lu Yun suddenly thought of fruit tanghulu again.

Traditional candied haw tanghulu used hawthorns, but Lu Yun clearly remembered a period in the future when making tanghulu with various fruits became quite popular. Tanghulu could be made by boiling malt sugar, which required germinated wheat, something that wasn’t too hard to come by in the countryside.

"I don’t have malt sugar in my big warehouse."

"Finally, there’s something your big warehouse doesn’t have," Xia Yuan said with a laugh and a sigh.

"That’s easy, there are plenty of people in the village who can make it. I’ll send a letter back and tell the villagers to make more of it. We can buy it up, and it won’t cost much. Afterwards, we don’t even need to go back to get it. We’ll just send the money back and have Aibing make a trip to Haicheng to deliver it, which won’t be too much trouble."

Lu Aiguo thought over what Lu Yun said and felt that trying it out wouldn’t be a bad idea. Moreover, by buying the malt sugar, they could let the villagers earn some extra money.

"And potatoes, I was thinking maybe we could also have our villagers plant some. Later on, we can buy them directly. Since we’ll have to spend money to buy them anyway, we might as well let the people from our own village earn it."

Since they were already on the topic of malt sugar, Lu Aiguo took the opportunity to bring up potatoes.

Right now, the daily shipments of potato chips were still on the rise, showing no signs of slowing down. Their own demand for potatoes would only increase. Potatoes can be grown in two seasons a year and aren’t too labor-intensive to tend to, with the added benefit of high yields.

It’s also like not letting the ’nutrient-rich water flow into others’ fields.’

No one opposed the proposal. Having some capability and thinking of doing what one can for the people of one’s hometown only demonstrated that Lu Aiguo was a person with a sense of loyalty and duty.

Indeed, if he weren’t so loyal and dutiful, he wouldn’t be able to get along with Shitou’s family so well. However, Lu Aiguo wasn’t the ’philanthropic’ type. There were many more people in the village in need besides Shitou. Lu Aiguo had casually helped quite a few people. The fact that the two of them had gradually developed a true friendship was also largely due to Shitou’s own sense of gratitude.
