Chapter 134: Chapter 129: Side Effects
"...it really felt like being sliced and scorched, too painful to bear. And when I lay down to sleep and drank that bottle of elixir, it was as if a fire was burning up from inside my stomach, leaving me completely drained and nearly unable to move."
Downstairs, Lu Aiguo was pacing tirelessly behind Xia Yuan.
"I thought I wouldn’t be able to get up this morning. I really regretted it then, thinking I should’ve listened to my daughter. Shitou and I can endure this pain without issue, but it wasn’t right to let you and our daughter suffer like this. But waking up this morning, I felt that the hardship we’ve endured was so worthwhile. My whole body feels energetic, and it’s hard to describe how light and relaxed I am. Everything tastes amazing. It’s just unbearable not to be able to be with you."
Last night, because we were using the medicinal bath elixir, and had to take a dose afterward, we were completely drained and couldn’t move, so we put beds next to the bathtubs. We all just laid down and went to sleep.
"Three more months, my dear..." Lu Aiguo wailed.
Now that he saw the benefits, Lu Aiguo didn’t feel that the medicinal bath was torment anymore, but the fact that he couldn’t lie in the same bed with his wife for a whole three months was absolute torture.
At the door, Lu Yun, who had overheard her father, covered her mouth to stifle her laughter.
It did sound rather cruel...
"What on earth is going through your head all day?" Xia Yuan was cooking and could hardly resist the urge to hit him on the head with the spatula upon hearing what Lu Aiguo had said behind her, "It’s just three months."
Just three months? He couldn’t stand it for even three days, he couldn’t think anymore, he had no energy left... He just needed to see his wife beside him to feel at ease.
Lu Aiguo looked at Xia Yuan pitifully, making a face like a little dog that has been abandoned. Seeing this made Xia Yuan’s heart ache, "Alright, alright, no more feeling sorry for yourself. Xiaoyun would laugh at you if she saw you like this."
Lu Yun paused, and quickly stepped back, accidentally bumping into Shitou who was behind her. She turned around quickly, put her finger to her lips and made a "shushing" gesture, signaling him to move back. Once they were in the living room, she asked, "How do you feel?"
"Very good, I can take it. What about you?" Shitou nodded, his expression showing overwhelming satisfaction.
That’s just twisted. How could he find enjoyment in such pain?
"I’m okay too," Lu Yun nodded with a wince, yet in her heart the idea of giving up that had plagued her previous life was no longer there. Perhaps having more to hold on to made the pain bearable.
"That’s good, don’t give up so easily this time," Shitou said seriously to her and then walked towards the kitchen, intentionally raising his voice, "I’m so hungry..."
"...I won’t." Lu Yun watched his retreating figure and chuckled, the inexplicable sadness evaporating instantly.
During breakfast, Lu Yun thought for a moment and then spoke up, "Mom, dad, we’ve tried it for one night and know what the process is like. So, starting tonight, we can each take our medicinal baths separately."
"Yes, yes, yes," Lu Aiguo nodded eagerly.
"What’s so good? Xiaoyun, are you sure you can manage it by yourself?" Xia Yuan once again stepped on Lu Aiguo’s foot, almost bringing him to tears, but she ignored him and turned to Lu Yun with concern.
"I’ll be fine," Lu Yun said, barely able to look at Lu Aiguo’s "tragic" state.
"Can this elixir be given to others?" Xia Yuan struggled with the question for a while but eventually couldn’t help but ask.
"It’s best to start from those with no particular demands on their body and gradually transition. When the time comes, just mix it into food directly," Lu Yun said.
Not that Lu Yun was unwilling to let others use the elixir of intermediate strength or higher; she simply couldn’t be sure when their bodies would meet the required standards, so she opted for caution.
After all, she was just capable of concocting an elixir and wasn’t skilled in diagnosing and treating ailments by feeling one’s pulse.
"Got it," Xia Yuan said, understanding what was meant, and thus didn’t say anything more.
On Sunday morning, Lu Aiguo stayed at home to help Xia Yuan with chores and to entertain guests in the afternoon. Lu Yun sat in the basket of Shitou’s tricycle, accompanying him to deliver goods.
The potato chip business of Lu Aiguo and Shitou had now expanded, and each had to transport at least one and a half to two loads of goods out every day. This increased the workload for Xia Yuan at home.
Fortunately, after soaking in the Medicinal Bath Elixir, everyone felt much better and didn’t feel tired even after a full day, so Lu Aiguo and Shitou didn’t hold back. Instead, their ambitions grew even more, and they were even plotting further business expansion together.
So Lu Yun couldn’t help but be amused; was there a "side effect" to letting them use the Medicinal Bath Elixir? The two of them were also surprisingly harsh on themselves.
After 1 p.m., Lu Yun and Shitou finally got back home. Lu Yun felt sleepy and wanted to take a nap, but Shitou still had the energy to hop around and offer help with the vacuum fryer to make potato chips.
Seeing him so energized, and finding her parents still busy in the storage room when they arrived, she had no choice but to help collect the finished products and then take out the raw materials. In the end, she even complied with their request and placed two additional vacuum fryers in an empty suite on the first floor.
Around two to three in the afternoon, Lu Aiguo personally rode out to pick up Xia Na, Gu Tianming, and Gu Feng and Gu Meng to bring them to their new house.
During the trip, Xia Na and Gu Tianming were complaining about how they should have been asked to help with such a big task as moving. It wasn’t right that Xia Yuan and Lu Aiguo didn’t ask for their assistance.
But after arriving and touring the new house, upon learning that the property wasn’t rented but actually purchased, and for a hefty price of twenty thousand yuan at that, they were utterly astonished, their mouths gaping wide open in disbelief.
To clear up their confusion, Xia Yuan decided to just lay it all out at once. She explained how Shitou had dug up ginseng on the mountain back home and then sold it for a high price in Haicheng; afterwards, the two brothers looked into buying a house but with no success, so they asked someone to apply for land in Jingtou Village to build a house, and by a stroke of luck stumbled upon the previous owner of this house who was in a rush to sell.
She also implied that Lu Aiguo and Shitou had been doing very well with their business these days.
There was no way they could keep the fact that they suddenly owned two properties in Haicheng hidden from Xia Na and Gu Tianming forever.
Xia Na and Gu Tianming were amazed by Shitou’s luck and jumped to the conclusion that most of the two properties must be registered in Shitou’s name, which made them feel it wouldn’t be proper to inquire further. Since they didn’t ask, Xia Yuan naturally wouldn’t go out of her way to explain in detail. But still, they were definitely intrigued by the construction of the houses on the land in Jingtou Village.
The adults and children alike had a great day.
Especially Gu Feng and Gu Meng, who were instantly captivated by the tabletop football that Lu Yun had taken out especially for them.
