Chapter 124: Chapter 120 Misunderstanding
Seeing Lu Aiguo and Shitou both looking guilty, Lu Yun shook her head with a smile and said, "No problem here, I can handle it quickly."
Using her thoughts to peel the potatoes, slice them thinly, and then bag them in her space was an easy task, and she estimated that even if the quantity were several times larger, it would still be fine.
"I’m even less worried," Xia Yuan also laughed, indicating it wasn’t a big deal. "I just need to keep an eye on the time to turn the switches on and off, super easy."
"In my opinion, we might as well name our chip brand ’Duo Duo’-- ’However tasty, it’s never too much,’" Lu Aiguo suddenly had a burst of inspiration.
"Duo Duo-- ’However tasty, it’s never too much,’" Lu Yun repeated softly and then nodded vigorously, "Simple and memorable, it even comes with its own advertising slogan. Dad, you’re amazing."
"What do you think, sister-in-law? If no one has any objections, let’s settle on this," Shitou, having repeated it a couple of times, also thought it was quite good.
Xia Yuan nodded her agreement as well.
So, Lu Yun took a piece of paper and a pencil, wrote down the characters for "Duo Duo" in large script, then sketched a simple image of chips spreading like flower petals in the air, and finally in small letters she wrote "However tasty, it’s never too much." Fortunately, Lu Yun had been learning how to read and write recently, so she knew how to write; neither Lu Aiguo nor Xia Yuan found this surprising.
Lu Yun showed the sketch to everyone, "What do you think about using this for the print?"
"Very good," Lu Aiguo, Shitou, and Xia Yuan all took a look and nodded their heads in approval, and with that, they resolved the matter of naming the chips.
Not long after, Lu Aiguo and Shitou indeed went to a printing factory and printed tens of thousands of specialty food packaging papers, featuring the drawing that Lu Yun had made.
Many years later, "Duo Duo Chips" and the various snacks of the "Duo Duo" series, along with the slogan "However tasty, it’s never too much," had become deeply ingrained in people’s hearts and etched into the depths of their memories.
Even as more and more snack varieties and brands emerged over time, none could shake their firmly rooted status in everyone’s hearts. When it came to snacks, for many people, "Duo Duo" was still the first thing that came to mind.
Life continued.
Day after day, Lu Aiguo and Shitou would take the thermos food containers prepared by Xia Yuan in advance and push a cart full of goods out in the morning, not returning until four or five in the afternoon. Almost without exception, they would come back with a cart full of potatoes.
Fortunately, potatoes were abundant this season and could be bought without a grain book, let alone Food Coupons, so the two of them went around to different vegetable stores to buy them every day.
Lu Yun had mentioned more than once that she had plenty of potatoes in her space, but Lu Aiguo insisted on buying more whenever they could, as they were needed anyway. Seeing his determination, Lu Yun didn’t argue anymore. After all, her space was large enough; there was no problem with storing anything.
The landlord, Sister Tao, showed extreme curiosity whenever she saw Lu Aiguo and his family returning home, each time with a huge cart of potatoes. Even if the potatoes were covered with a tarp, this might fool others, but it couldn’t conceal her nosy nature.
She always insisted on lifting a corner of the tarp to take a peek, and Lu Aiguo and Shitou really had no way to stop her. Fortunately, what they did with their potatoes was none of her business.
In response to Sister Tao’s roundabout questions about why they bought so many potatoes, Xia Yuan, Lu Aiguo, and Shitou all gave vague answers, mentioning that their family loved to eat them but never directly addressing her curiosity.
Finally, Sister Tao turned her attention to Lu Yun, seizing an opportunity to question her. Lu Yun looked at Sister Tao with innocent eyes, "Our whole family loves them. The shredded potatoes my mom cooks are so delicious. Potatoes can even serve as a main dish, you know. Dad and Shitou like them, and so do mom and me."
"Even if you like them, you can’t eat a cartful in one day, right?"
Sister Tao, pouting, realized she couldn’t get a straight answer and began to think. She hadn’t seen this family go out to buy meat or buy rice or flour. It seemed like every once in a while, Xia Yuan would go out and buy some vegetables.
Putting these observations together, Sister Tao thought she had uncovered the truth, which made her disdain for them increase. She figured they might indeed be eating potatoes as their main meal. Perhaps they were taking advantage of the low prices to stock up for the whole year? No wonder they were so secretive; they must feel too ashamed to admit their own poverty.
As a result, Sister Tao lost the interest in lifting the tarp on Lu Aiguo and Shitou’s cart. Whenever they came and went, she lifted her head higher when she saw them, especially when they were hauling potatoes home, with a clear look of disdain.
The change in Sister Tao’s behaviour baffled Lu Aiguo, Shitou, and Xia Yuan, but none of them had the time or interest to seek out the reason.
When Xia Yuan went out to buy vegetables on a few occasions, she noticed strange, sidelong glances from others. When she reached the familiar vegetable vendor, they would make sympathetic comments like, "Ah, a woman should marry well for her sake," or "You can be shorthanded but never shortchange your children." And it became apparent the frequency of the offered leftovers also increased.
Finally, one day Xia Yuan took Lu Yun to buy vegetables, and the vendor offered her more greens again when no one else was around. Out of curiosity, she asked, "Sister, what’s going on? Why do I feel like everyone’s been looking at me strangely these days?"
The vegetable vendor was startled, then laughed awkwardly, "No, no, you’re mistaken."
"Sister, I’ve bought vegetables from you since I arrived in this place because your vegetables are fresh, and your scales are fair; I could tell you’re a good person. I don’t know anyone else to ask, and these past few days, I’ve even felt that you’ve changed. Please tell me," Xia Yuan pleaded with a wry smile, "Otherwise, I’ll keep feeling like something’s wrong."
"There’s really nothing else; it’s just what your landlord has been saying. She claims your daughter told her that your family eats potatoes as your main meal every day and only buys the cheapest vegetables without buying anything else, never even seeing you eat meat. She... she’s always worried you won’t be able to pay the rent..." The vegetable vendor hesitated, looking at Xia Yuan embarrassingly.
"..." Xia Yuan’s eyes widened in disbelief as she glanced at Lu Yun.
"Mom, I never said that," Lu Yun quickly shook her head, "The landlord came asking when Dad brought potatoes home, and I just mentioned you can have potatoes as a dish or main meal, and everyone in our family loves them."
Lu Yun counted on her fingers, looking aggrieved, and scrunched her nose at the vegetable vendor, "We still have a lot of the rice we brought from home and the wild boar, pheasants, ducks, rabbits, and fish we got from the mountains. My mom has cured them all in salt and hung them up; we have enough to last a long time, which is why we haven’t been out to buy meat."
