Chapter 121: Chapter 118 Potato Chips
Once at home, to avoid the landlord coming to scold them again, and because everyone was quite tired after the day’s activities, they quickly washed up. After deciding to discuss the next day what snacks would be suitable to sell, they all turned off the lights and went to sleep early.
The next day, around seven o’clock, Lu Yun woke up feeling refreshed from a good night’s sleep. She saw that Lu Aiguo and Shitou were still at home and hadn’t left. Compared to her late rising, the other three had gotten up early and already finished quite a lot of work.
The four of them sat at the dining table, eating breakfast and quietly starting their discussions.
"What were those snacks that Xiaoyun mentioned the day before yesterday?" Lu Aiguo was the first to ask.
"Fried popcorn, roasted chestnuts, fried soybeans, fried sunflower seeds, all kinds of hawthorn slices, hawthorn cakes, hawthorn strips, and machines for making potato chips, egg yolk pies, various candied fruits, fruit juices, and candies," Shitou quickly repeated.
"Right, those. But I really don’t understand what potato chips and egg yolk pies are..." Lu Aiguo was no longer surprised by Shitou’s good memory, and the two started murmuring among themselves.
Lu Yun, however, wasn’t paying attention to what the two were saying, and had forgotten what she herself had said that day, now deeply lost in her own thoughts and struggles!
In her opinion, there were actually many different snacks that could be made, and the machines in her space were quite complete. But in her previous life, Lu Yun didn’t like snacks, so she couldn’t recall instantly which one would be suitable given their current living conditions and machines, and yet would be popular as soon as they appeared.
Then there was the issue of snack packaging--they had the machines and materials, all of which were no problem, but they really couldn’t bring them out in their current environment because even if they did, they wouldn’t be able to use them.
The biggest problem was still the lack of space.
When she first put the various machines in her space, she had thought it through very thoroughly. Most of the machines in the space were either modified or equipped with sufficiently powerful solar panels.
Otherwise, living here and even just turning on the lights at night would bring the landlord over to bang on the door and scold them with glee. Lu Yun could hardly imagine, if by the end of the month, they found the electric meter numbers climbing rapidly, how frantic and hopping mad the landlord would become?
Even if they were willing to pay for the electricity themselves, they couldn’t explain how they used so much. Also, whether the current wiring could handle the load of using the machines a few more times was another issue.
Using solar panels would certainly solve the electricity problem completely, but their yard was really too small, and more importantly, the walls of the yard were too low.
Even the oil pressing machine was not suitable for display. The courtyard walls were too low. Even if they didn’t mind the squeeze and set things up, once they started using the machines, there would still be some noise, no matter how small, and then there was the scent... The neighbors would easily notice something strange, and when curiosity got the better of them and they came over to look, how were they going to explain then?
It would be a problem if the landlord suspected them and reported them, drawing attention from people they didn’t want to attract...
After thinking it over, Lu Yun shook her head at each option. Xia Yuan found Lu Yun’s frowning face amusing, so she put some shredded potatoes into her bowl with her chopsticks, "Eat your meal first, then think it over slowly. Don’t let the food get cold again."
Lu Yun looked up at her words and smiled, casually putting a strip of potato into her mouth. That’s when she suddenly snapped to attention and exclaimed, "Potato chips."
Right, how could she have forgotten about potato chips, a snack that still enjoys enduring popularity decades later? Potatoes are not only the perfect raw material, they’re inexpensive, and a single one can make plenty of potato chips.
The crux of the matter is that the process of making potato chips isn’t difficult at all. Peeling and slicing them thinly could be done in her space, which would also give her a chance to exercise her spiritual power. Even when she started going to school, it wouldn’t get in the way of her work.
To fry the potato chips, she could use an air fryer. It wouldn’t require solar panels with too much power—small ones would do, and placing them in the yard wouldn’t be too conspicuous. As for packaging, there was no immediate solution, so they’d have to make do with the oil paper sold at the supply and marketing cooperative for now. Later on, they could try visiting a printing factory to see if they could order custom packaging bags and even print their brand name on them, however simple...
The more Lu Yun thought about it, the more feasible it seemed. Selling fried potato chips would indeed be ideal, especially since they could last a long time. Unable to contain her excitement, she said to the three people in front of her, "Let’s fry potato chips and sell them."
"Potato chips, hmm, right, you mentioned this before. But what exactly are potato chips?" Lu Aiguo nodded.
"I mentioned them?" Lu Yun was astonished, recalling past conversations. Indeed, she had mentioned them before... She couldn’t help but smile and inwardly chide herself for being forgetful.
The other three looked on, baffled, as Lu Yun laughed to herself, then she took out a bag of plain potato chips, opened it, and poured some onto a plate.
"They taste quite good. So, these are potato chips? What are they made of?" Lu Aiguo, Xia Yuan, and Shitou all picked up a chip with their chopsticks, put it into their mouths, and showed a pleased expression. They asked curiously.
"Potatoes," Lu Yun declared cheerfully.
"You’re saying these are made from those potatoes that cost five cents a pound?" All three looked at Lu Yun in astonishment. If true, what would the profit margin be? They all got excited—this item could probably sell for ten cents a bag, couldn’t it?
"Yes," Lu Yun said as she took out two commercial air fryers, much larger than the usual household ones, along with a compact set of solar panels.
"With these air fryers, you only need a little oil to fry a big pot of potato chips; you don’t even have to watch over it—it can automatically time itself and shut off when done. We can temporarily rotate between four machines. However, if we fry them ourselves, I’m not sure if the taste will be as good as these chips I’ve brought. We need to keep trying different recipes and tweaking them."
As Lu Yun spoke, she felt that this wasn’t an issue at all; with a few tries, who knows, maybe she would come up with an even better taste.
"As for the packaging, for now, we’ll have to go buy oil paper for packing. Depending on how they sell, we’ll then look for a printing factory to order custom packaging and even print our brand on them."
Lu Yun still felt it was a bit of a pity—many things still tied her hands, and it wasn’t quite time for her to fully show what she could do. But the good thing was that it was almost time. Besides, you have to eat your meals one bite at a time—not to hurry, but to take it slowly.
"This is called an air fryer? This gadget needs electricity to work? And what is this?" Lu Aiguo and Shitou had already looked over the air fryer and solar panels thoroughly.
