Chapter 116: Chapter 115 Dispute
"Okay, but this matter probably won’t be able to be settled in a short time. We still have to grind away at it, so we need to find a place nearby, whether it’s renting or buying. Let’s just move first and talk about the rest later."
Lu Aiguo had managed to bring out a wild rabbit to give away just now, which showed he already thought the idea was worth a try, so when he saw Shitou agreed, he no longer hesitated.
Since they had made up their minds, the three of them continued to walk the streets, selling goods and asking about houses.
Unfortunately, they visited more than twenty households that afternoon, sold quite a few goods, but made no progress on the housing front. There were a few kind-hearted households that promised to help ask around, and without exception, all of them made appointments to follow up in a few days.
Cooking oil was the best seller, with seventy to eighty pounds sold that afternoon. Almost every household would take a pound or two; the biggest buyers even kept a whole five-pound bucket.
Wild boar meat, rabbit meat, pheasants, and ducks, being rare and meaty, not easily purchasable on a regular basis, made everyone eager to buy. When it came to paying, they were just as generous.
Fish was the least sold among the meats, probably because it was cured and therefore not very popular, and in the end only about ten were sold. Chestnuts and yams drew even fewer buyers. Besides the five or six pounds of chestnuts sold at the start, a few more were sold intermittently, and then no one else expressed interest.
The yams had it worse; only one was actually sold, not even a full pound. The rest Lu Aiguo gave away for free when he saw people buying a lot of other goods.
By the time they got home, it was starting to get dark. After knocking and calling out, Xia Yuan quickly came out to open the door, "What took you so long? I almost thought the three of you had gotten lost. Did it go well?"
Xia Yuan saw that the three of them were in good spirits and beaming with smiles, so she guessed that the ginseng must have sold for a good price, and her heart immediately eased.
"It went really well." Lu Aiguo looked at Xia Yuan and couldn’t help but smile.
It wasn’t appropriate to talk much outside, so once inside the house, there was already a big plate of fried dumplings, rice, stir-fried wood ear mushrooms with eggs, lettuce, and a big plate of mixed hollow heart vegetable on the dining table.
"Did you go out to buy vegetables?" Lu Aiguo saw the lettuce and hollow heart vegetable and couldn’t help but take an extra helping with his chopsticks.
"Mm-hmm. I went out with Sister. We bought them from a nearby vegetable farmer. Most were only fifty cents a pound, and the hollow heart vegetable looked very fresh and cost only eight cents for a big bunch. I thought they all looked good, so I bought several kinds at once. Xiaoyun, remember to put them away later," Xia Yuan said casually, but there was a slight blush on her face.
"Okay."
Lu Yun sensed her mother’s unusual behavior, but didn’t call it out and just nodded her head. She quietly extended her spiritual power, instantly spotting the big pile of various vegetables in the corner of the room, and she immediately figured it out. While she was storing the vegetables in her space, she couldn’t help but want to laugh.
Mom must be embarrassed because she bought too much, right?
Xia Yuan sat down to eat with everyone and picked up her bowl, "Seeing how happy you all are, how much did that ginseng sell for in the end?"
"If we can buy vegetables nearby, why did you buy so many types at once? Isn’t it fresher to buy a little each day?" Lu Aiguo was a bit puzzled.
"Isn’t it because I encountered some that had just been harvested from the vegetable field? They looked so good, I couldn’t resist at the time. Hey, I’m asking you a question?" Annoyed and a bit embarrassed, Xia Yuan had just been teased by her sister, who said she would regret it when the vegetables wilted in a couple of days. She couldn’t explain that they wouldn’t wilt, but she knew she really needed to be more careful next time.
"Thirty-five thousand yuan."
"What? Say that again." Xia Yuan was stunned, thinking she must have heard wrong due to a problem with her ears.
"You heard correctly, it is thirty-five thousand yuan."
Lu Aiguo explained the details of buying the ginseng and the events of the afternoon with a smile, not omitting their discussions about selling processed snacks or the tip-off they received about bidding on land to build houses.
Xia Yuan stared at them blankly for a long time before finally managing to say, "This money belongs to Shitou, and whether it’s used for buying or building a house, it must be registered in Shitou’s name."
"Of course."
Lu Aiguo nodded as if it were a matter of course, "This sum is too large, so it’s been placed directly in Xiaoyun’s big warehouse. After all, it will be convenient to take out when we need to use it."
Xia Yuan agreed, "I kept about a hundred yuan on me; the rest is also at Xiaoyun’s. Otherwise, I would be afraid even just to step out the door."
Since Lu Aiguo started keeping the little yellow croakers and yuan big-head coins given by Lu Aimei for her, she had been worried about not being able to hide the items securely. In the end, she decided to keep a little for herself to use as needed and stored the rest of her belongings in Lu Yun’s big warehouse.
"This money isn’t mine alone; it belongs to all of us." Shitou helplessly reiterated.
"No way." Lu Aiguo and Xia Yuan objected in unison.
"Then count this house purchase as yours. When we build a house, that can be counted as mine, and I’ll register Xiaoyun’s name for my house," Shitou continued to eat his meal, not really thinking and just continuing, "Consider it temporarily placed under her name."
"No, both buying and building the house have to be counted as yours, and adding the two together won’t even use up that much... Temporarily registering your things under Xiaoyun’s name is okay, but it can’t be for too long. When you come of age, it still needs to be changed back." Xia Yuan shook her head and Lu Aiguo echoed this sentiment.
"Brother Aiguo, Sister-in-law, do you actually consider me family?" Shitou looked up, gazing at them seriously.
"Of course, we are family. But even among brothers, accounts must be settled clearly," Xia Yuan said first.
"Sister-in-law, it’s right to settle accounts clearly, but I can’t take all the benefits, can I? We dug out the ginseng together, so by the rules, whoever is there gets a share. I’ve already benefited greatly, and building a house is definitely going to cost more than buying one," Shitou sighed.
"Since we’re speaking openly, let’s just make everything clear now. Those little yellow croakers and yuan big-head coins were given to Brother Aiguo by Sister Aimei separately; they should not be included in the capital. In the future, you can keep the other earnings; just giving me a thirty percent share is enough. Everything is to be registered under Xiaoyun’s name."
"Thirty percent is too little; I can’t agree to that. You should have at least half. The little yellow croakers and yuan big-head coins might be given to me by your elder sister, but since your ginseng is already counted as capital, there’s no reason they shouldn’t be included as well. Tell me, could those items be sold for thirty-five thousand yuan?"
Lu Aiguo flatly rejected Shitou’s suggestion, having originally planned to include the little yellow croakers and yuan big-head coins as part of the capital, "If we really divided it that way, what kind of people would your sister-in-law and I be? What difference would there be between us and your uncle and aunt?"
"Yes, Shitou, I also think it makes more sense to do it the way your Brother Aiguo suggests," Xia Yuan said, nodding in support of Lu Aiguo.
