Chapter 105: Chapter 104 The Unsatisfactory House

Having seen Gu Tianming and Xia Na off and returned to the house, they all felt tired after sitting on a train for the whole day. Except for Lu Yun, who had slept throughout the journey and was still in good spirits, everyone else just wanted to start by washing their hands and faces, then have a meal, take a bath, and prepare the beds for sleep.

After all, other matters weren’t urgent and could be sorted out slowly the next day.

But while the imagination was filled with beautiful thoughts, reality was stark.

They searched everywhere—front and back, inside and out—but could not find a single drop of water. There were no water pipes, faucets, wells, or water jars to be found.

"How can we live without water?" Lu Aiguo was dumbfounded.

"I guess there must be a well nearby. My sister and brother-in-law probably just forgot to tell us about it." Haicheng was Xia Yuan’s hometown, after all, and after a moment of panic, she soon remembered the wells that were common there.

"It’s inconvenient not to have water now. How about Shitou and I go look for some nearby and also bring some back?"

Lu Aiguo felt a bit of a headache. He and Shitou were fine; it was common for them not to bathe for days and nights while living in the mountains. But things were different now. He might not care, but his wife was particular about these matters.

They had been on a train for a day, and if they didn’t take baths and wash their hair before sleeping tonight, his wife probably wouldn’t sleep well. It was likely that she would end up washing every sheet, blanket, and thin quilt they had laid out on the bed tomorrow.

"But it’s so dark outside."

Xia Yuan was also torn. She wanted to say forget it, since it was dark and they weren’t familiar with the area; she felt uneasy about going out blindly searching. But the more she thought about it, the less comfortable she felt about going to bed without a drop of water to use, as her body felt sticky and uncomfortable.

"It’s okay. Xiaoyun, fetch a few buckets and a longer rope. And bring a flashlight too," said Lu Aiguo with a smile towards Xia Yuan, then called out for Lu Yun. He flashed them a white-toothed smile, "Locating places is Shitou’s and my forte. You two just lock the door, and don’t open it for anyone but us calling out."

"Dad, there’s no need to fetch water from outside; we have hot water," said Lu Yun in a soft voice, glancing at the narrow courtyard and the low mud wall that bordered it.

In fact, bringing out the RV would have been the best solution. Her original plan was for everyone to rest in the RV for the night, having a comfortable bath and meal. They would tidy up the house after a good night’s rest the next day.

But she knew her plan fell through the moment they stepped through the gate. Not to mention the yard being too narrow to fit the RV, she wouldn’t dare to bring out the vehicle even if there was enough space.

The surrounding wall was so low, barely one and a half meters tall; any adult could look over it and see everything clearly. Considering the light spilling from the neighboring house, if she brought out the RV, who knows if someone might unintentionally—or intentionally—catch a glimpse of it?

Fortunately, though they couldn’t bring out the RV, the hot water stored in its bathroom was still accessible. Her space also had all the necessary "equipment," such as washbasins, buckets, and bathtubs, so bathing wasn’t an issue.

"Let’s go inside to talk," said Lu Aiguo, nodding and lowering his voice as a signal for everyone to enter the house. They all nodded in agreement, entered the house, and consciously kept their voices down.

Eventually, they decided to take turns bathing in the tubs in the room with two beds belonging to Shitou and Lu Yun. Fortunately, the water storage in the RV was more than enough, and the mix of hot and cold water filled four large tubs.

After everyone had taken turns to bathe, Lu Yun carefully collected the bathwater without spilling any outside.

Once all four were refreshed and sitting around the small round table, eating the meal Xia Yuan had prepared at home, Lu Yun whispered, "If only we had our own big house here, just like at home, that would be great. I’m already missing our big courtyard back home."

Mainly, if we really had a private space just for the four of us, everything would be so convenient!

Living in such a small courtyard, what secrets can be kept?

Alas!

She truly felt as though everything about her was displayed under the scrutiny of others, and it created a terrible sense of insecurity. Dreaming of privacy while living here was simply delusional. Yet, they had too many secrets that simply couldn’t be exposed.

But if we don’t live here, we really don’t know where else to move in the short term?

"Buy a house?"

Xia Yuan let out a self-mocking laugh when she heard this.

She had instantly recognized the shortcomings of this house. If they could have their own place in Haicheng, especially one with a large courtyard, who wouldn’t like that? Even if the house was rented, and the rent was double or even triple, she would grit her teeth and agree to it.

But nowadays, people don’t have enough room for themselves in their houses, let alone have extra to sell. And even if someone was willing to sell, they couldn’t afford to buy one in a short time.

Although she had some money and possessions at the moment, that money and those things were given by Second Uncle, Second Aunt, and her elder sister to do business; they couldn’t possibly use it to buy a house for themselves, right? That would be inappropriate, and the money from selling the ginseng even more so, since Shitou had discovered it...

"In the future, Daddy will definitely make a lot of money and buy Xiaoyun a big house just like the one you mentioned, okay?" Lu Aiguo said, his voice filled with apology as he soothed Lu Yun.

"I believe Daddy will be able to do it one day."

Lu Yun gave Lu Aiguo a sweet smile, encouraging him.

She lowered her head to eat, trying hard to recall the house she and her father had lived in Haicheng in the following years after her previous life, only to realize that none of the places they had stayed seemed suitable.

Back then, it was just the two of them, and a small single room was sufficient. For a long time, she remembered living in places far more complicated than here.

"Brother Aiguo, let’s start looking for something tomorrow while selling our goods and also see if there’s a more suitable place to move into," Shitou suddenly suggested.

"We really should start looking again as soon as possible. I don’t believe we won’t find a more suitable place," Lu Aiguo agreed, nodding his head.

"There’s no need to hurry and look tomorrow, right? Besides, you have to retrieve the shipped goods tomorrow. Plus, considering it’s your first time in Haicheng, it’s better to let your brother-in-law show you around first. Waiting another couple of days to look is the same," Xia Yuan said, her concern evident.

Xia Yuan’s worry was obvious, but Lu Aiguo laughed confidently, patting his chest, "Don’t worry, Shitou and I won’t get lost. We started out as strangers in the village and the county, too. Haicheng is bigger, but it’s not enough to get us lost. What’s the saying? ’The way is on the tongue.’"
