Chapter 49: Ch 49: Revenge at Last - Part 1

Commander Zero took a single step forward, spear brimming with energy, when a sharp beep echoed through the corridor—an urgent tone laced with authority.

[All active officers, report to Command Hall Alpha. Emergency override priority: Black.]

The announcement rang out clearly across the base, but Zero’s eyes didn’t waver from Nova. He merely scoffed and muttered.

"Emergency or not... I’m busy."

Nova didn’t move. His weapon still glowed faintly in his hand, but his stance was calm, patient. Watching.

"I’ll admit, you’re something else. I don’t know what kind of monster you are, but I respect strength. And you’ve got it."

Zero said, straightening slightly and deactivating his spear with a hum.

He paused, raising a hand.

"That’s why I’m giving you this chance. Join me, Nova. Be my second-in-command. I’ll overlook this little betrayal of yours."

Anna’s eyes widened behind Nova.

Nova’s response was a flat.

"No."

Zero’s brow twitched.

"Excuse me?"

"I don’t serve people weaker than me."

Silence.

Commander Zero’s fingers tightened around the handle of his spear. His face, calm and collected just seconds ago, twisted into something colder—sharper.

"You’re prideful. I get it. But don’t push me, Nova. Even I have limits to my patience."

His voice was lower now, taut with tension.

Nova didn’t flinch.

"Then I suggest you start exercising it."

Zero’s jaw clenched. And then, with a roar, he surged forward.

At that exact moment, Nyx’s voice echoed in Nova’s ear.

[Nova. The firewall’s been breached. I’ve initiated the secondary phase. Base weapons are now locked on this facility. Countdown to firing: one hour.]

Nova’s eyes sharpened. He no longer needed to stall.

He raised his hand, and his aether flared violently—green-gold light bursting outward in a shockwave that slammed into Zero’s chest and sent the commander skidding back down the corridor, boots scraping against the floor.

Anna gasped as Nova turned to her, his aura rippling like a storm around him.

"It’s time to go."

He grabbed her hand and pulled her close, wrapping his energy protectively around them both.

Behind them, Zero groaned and struggled to his feet, coughing.

"You—"

Nova looked over his shoulder.

"This place is done. You’ve got one hour before it all comes crashing down."

He said simply.

Zero froze.

"And I’m only telling you. Because you treated me well when you didn’t have to. I’m repaying that debt."

Nova added, his voice quiet.

Without waiting for a reply, Nova turned and pulled Anna into motion.

The glow of his aether swallowed them both, and they vanished into the smoke-filled corridor, leaving the commander standing alone.

And behind him, the countdown ticked on.

Commander Zero stood in the dim hallway, shoulders squared, eyes locked on the space where Nova had disappeared.

Smoke hissed from the walls, and flickers of red emergency light danced across his face.

"A debt, huh..."

He muttered.

His hand flexed around the shaft of his spear, knuckles white. He hadn’t been pushed back like that in years—not since his first deployment on the Kaldros Front.

And yet... Nova had done it like it was nothing. Like swatting away a fly.

"Humanoid or not, he’s dangerous."

Zero growled.

The emergency lights intensified, and the base-wide broadcast repeated itself, more urgent this time.

[All officers—repeat, report to Command Hall Alpha. External threat imminent.]

Zero turned toward the nearest wall panel and activated his communicator.

"Redirect priority. I want full tracking on the humanoid and the girl. All internal cams, active. I want their route traced."

[Understood, Commander]

The AI replied, but then added.

[Warning: aether interference detected. Visual and sensor data compromised. Targets currently untraceable.]

Zero’s jaw clenched.

"Of course it is..."

But then he took a breath, the tension rolling off him slightly.

"One hour..."

He echoed Nova’s words to himself.

Despite the anger, the bruised pride, and the sting of rejection, something inside him twisted—an unfamiliar flicker of respect.

Nova had spared him. Could’ve killed him. Chose not to.

He didn’t know what the humanoid’s real goal was, but if Nova had that kind of power now...

Then the rest of the world had better start paying attention.

He tapped the screen again.

"Initiate fallback protocol. Begin preparing evacuation paths from Sectors 6 to 14. Quietly. Don’t start a panic yet."

[Confirmed.]

"And keep me posted on any changes to Vault Sector Zeta’s readings."

Zero turned, letting the screen dim behind him as he started walking. Not toward the command hall. Not toward safety.

He was heading back into the storm.

Because if Nova was right, this facility didn’t have much time left—and Zero wanted to see with his own eyes just how far the humanoid was willing to go.

______

Anna and Nova dashed through the metallic hallways, emergency lights pulsing in rhythmic red as the sirens blared in the distance.

The base was chaos—personnel shouting, alarms screaming, doors slamming open and closed—but that chaos was their cover.

The emergency hatch came into view, and just beyond it, through the transparent panels, the sleek, silver-lined ship Nyx had sent for them hovered silently.

Its engines glowed low, ready for a quiet extraction.

As they slipped through the hatch and sprinted toward the ramp, Anna panted, her voice edged with hesitation.

"Nova... all those people we’re leaving behind—will they be okay?"

Nova didn’t look at her as the ramp sealed behind them. He stepped forward to the console and pressed his palm against the control plate, letting Nyx’s system recognize him.

"No. They won’t."

He said flatly.

Anna froze in place, her chest still rising and falling with each breath.

"...We’re going to destroy Planet Urn?"

"In one hour."

Her voice dropped to a whisper.

"Is that really necessary...?"

The ship lifted off, silent and smooth, rising into the night sky as the facility grew smaller below them.

Nova turned his head slightly, enough to meet her eyes.

"It’s the promise I made. So it’s the promise I’ll keep."

He said quietly.

Anna said nothing after that.

She simply looked down through the window, at the world below that had imprisoned a childlike god and tried to eliminate Nova without a second thought.

Her fingers curled slightly.

She didn’t agree with it.

But she didn’t stop him either.

They returned to the ship, the hatch sealing behind them with a hiss. Nyx’s voice filled the quiet air, calm and steady.

[We’re in position. It’s time.]

Nova walked over to Anna, who was still holding the small, carefully wrapped bundle.

He took it from her arms and peeled back the cloth, revealing the tiny, white puppy-like creature curled inside.

Its body shimmered faintly with residual aether, though its eyes remained closed, resting in its hibernation.

Nova held it up gently and looked down at the soft creature.

"It’s time. Time to witness your revenge for yourself."

He said, his voice low but steady.

As if on cue, the creature stirred. Its eyes opened—hazy at first, then glowing with a pale, ethereal light. Outside the ship’s main viewport, Planet Urn sat still in space.

And then, with a silent pulse from deep within its core, it began to rupture.

A blinding white light exploded from the planet’s center, blooming outward in waves. Mountains crumbled, oceans boiled away, and the whole of Urn was engulfed in a radiant storm.

The creature watched, unblinking, as the world that caged it disappeared in light.
