Chapter 336: Pre-Tell
The exam went excellently well. I mean, despite my very busy weekend and the draining Monday, today not only had I revised in the morning, but I also had Sade within range to effectively use my MENTOR skills on.
Mr Robert tried to be sneaky with his questions, even giving wrong hints in earlier ones to confuse us on the later ones but I easily saw through his tricks.
"Mr. Lawson, sorry if you had other plans, but is it possible that you wait till the exams are over? The Dean would like to address the class."
Before even Sade could start attempting the last questions, I was already done with the exam. My plans after finishing were to step out and head over to the engineering building. My desire was to see Sophie and Isabella. It seemed I would have to put that on hold though.
As one could deduce, Mr. Robert was addressing me with respect not typically found in a teacher. It was apparent my status as a billionaire was beginning to take effect in the school. Though I could ignore the man’s words, I nodded to him.
"Of course, Sir."
...and returned to my seat.
As powerful as a grasshopper may be, a hundred ants can always do away with it.
Along with being a face of charity, humility would be my next biggest weapon in having the public on my side.
There was, of course, the awe and surprise on the faces of my colleagues at how quickly I was done with the exam. Sade seemed a bit conflicted, but overall, my performance seemed to light a fire in everyone.
An extra 30 minutes went by and everyone was done. The answer papers were collected, and as if waiting outside the whole time, in less than a minute the doors of the school were swung open, and a middle-aged man stepped in, dressed in black trousers with brown strapping over his shoulder.
The man had on a black tie and, walking to the front of the class, he greeted us and without delay made known the reason for his visit.
With other priorities roaming in my mind, I paid as much attention as I could to the Dean and caught the main lines.
"...While indeed the Computer Science course will now be running for five years, we are not deaf to your concerns or blind to how much this roughens up your schedule.
Various sections of school loans will be forgiven or better yet, forgotten and, in particular for you guys, you will be given the chance to join a government technical training program which assures you well-paying jobs when you graduate next year.
These jobs not only come with healthy salaries, but you’ll also find that housing and mobility will be well taken care of..."
This development surprised me, and minutes later, the question of a fellow coursemate had my mind straying to another of my pending problems.
"Sir, why just us Computer Science students? What of the other departments? They also had their years of study increased."
"...Unfortunately, resources are limited. Most importantly, one of the ways to accelerate the plans already in place and make it possible for those in other fields of study to benefit like yours is by maximizing innovation in areas you have knowledge in.
This means that you people are going ahead to open up..."
The Dean didn’t bore us. He had everyone’s attention for most of his time on the podium.
Within 7 minutes, the Dean departed the class and though students began filing out, my butt remained stuck to my chair, as I figured I might as well wait for the crowd at the door to lessen and for Sade to finish whatever business she had with Mr. Robert.
"...Sitting here just made me remember I have 4 more dates with you and a few lessons," I said to Sade when she walked up to my seat at the back.
"I’ve always been ready. You just never called to cash out."
"Hmm, I feel like I’m being robbed. I’d like to trade in those dates for something else."
"Nope. Not my fault your bargain has now lost its value."
A smile was on Sade’s face as we interacted, her hand over her chest in triumph and mockery of me. As I stood up, looking for us to move, the woman did something quite surprising.
Out here in public, in class, she hooked her arm around mine and, giving me a grin, marched with me outside.
"Wow."
It amazed me how a lot had changed with Sade, with me not even having much of an impact.
I mean, sure, I went to her house and nearly fucked her, but her current behavior and even the events that led me to her house—were not due to any particular effort of mine.
The best that could be said was that I had been present and consistent.
I was contemplating taking Sade home or to my new place when I was stopped just a few steps after leaving the classroom.
"Mr. Lawson, permit me to borrow some of your time," the Dean said from my right, his presence sudden and shocking.
"Ehmm, sure thing, Sir."
Though Sade quietly and tactfully removed her arm from mine, saying nothing as I took up the middle-aged man’s offer, I could see the displeasure in her eyes.
"Wait for me, this won’t take long."
With an apologetic smile to Sade, the Dean led the way, not to his office, but outside the building, going through the back.
"Hmm, isn’t your office suitable for whatever you want to discuss with me?"
"It is, but I would think you’d prefer an environment where you don’t feel pressured.
Personally, I don’t want to pressure you."
"Alright then, what is it you want?" I asked, my eyes going to the trimmed flowers by the side, the lawn behind them catching my attention and informing me of how badly they needed the lawnmower’s attention.
"Though we don’t carry the same clout as universities like Harvard, MIT, and Stanford, we are still one of the top-ranking universities in the country. The reason for that is students like you..."
Ring! Ring!
Not long into the Dean’s speech, my phone began ringing. Seeing the caller, I asked the Dean to excuse me.
"Hello?" A tight voice came from the other side.
"Martha," I casually answered.
"Listen carefully," the woman started...
