Chapter 2212: Chapter 2212: Is This Still Someone’s Mother?

“Ha!”

The Empress Dowager truly let out a laugh.

Madness, surely. Someone actually thought Zun’er resembled that rebellious son of hers? What an unprecedented absurdity. How could these two possibly be alike?

She couldn’t see any resemblance between Zun’er and that rebellious son. On the contrary, she had always felt he bore a striking similarity to the great general, General Ning. It turned out, all along she’d assumed the resemblance was due to Maternal Uncle Xiao. Never had she imagined these two might be father and son!

“It seems I have indeed wronged the Empress.”

“Yes, yes.”

Upon hearing her words, the Empress grasped them like a lifeline and eagerly nodded her head.

“Mother, you have wronged me. Zun’er, he…”

“Empress, perhaps it’s better for you to say less for now. Wait until we’ve questioned the other two witnesses, and then you can tell me if you were truly wronged, hmm?” The Empress Dowager interrupted her, casting a meaningful glance toward the nearby nanny.

The nanny understood and immediately sent someone outside to bring in two more individuals—a man and a woman—both marked with injuries.

“Hiss!”

When the Empress saw the pair, she couldn’t help but gasp sharply, instinctively stepping backward.

After retreating several steps, she bumped into a small body. Upon seeing it was her own son, she immediately wrapped her arms around him, as though holding him close could offer her a sliver of safety.

“Empress, do you recognize them?”

The Empress Dowager’s gaze was dark and sinister as it bore down on the Empress, questioning her.

“Them… Who are they? I don’t know them, I swear I don’t!”

One hand shielding her son’s eyes, the other clutching him tightly to her chest, the Empress shook her head vehemently at the pair, denying any association.

“Oh? The Empress claims not to know them, truly?”

The Empress Dowager regarded the pair with interest, the corners of her lips curving into a faint smirk.

“Well then, what a pity. Since the Empress does not know them, then… Guards, take these two away. Chop them into pieces and feed them to the demonic beasts in the harem!”

She issued the order to the nanny.

“Yes, Empress Dowager.”

Several palace guards and maids replied in unison, striding forward to seize the pair.

The woman had already been scared stiff, completely motionless. The man, however, retained a shred of reason. As the guards approached to drag him away, he quickly shouted toward the Empress.

“Daughter, save us! Don’t you recognize your father? We are your parents! You cannot abandon us!”

Shouting as he spoke, the man seized the opportunity before the guards could reach him, rushing toward the Empress. He had no desire to die. Despite his advanced years, he still hadn’t lived enough!

“Ah! Ah! Stay away! Get away from me! Who are you?”

How could the Empress possibly let the man touch her? Screaming, she dragged her child and fled to another corner. As she ran, she shouted repeatedly for palace maids to block the man.

“Guards, guards! Quickly drag this filthy commoner away! Take him away!”

The Empress Dowager furrowed her brows as she watched the Empress scream like a madwoman. What she found most intolerable, however, was how the Empress treated her own son, dragging him about like a ragged sack.

Ignoring the child’s painful cries and pleas, she seemed entirely oblivious. Was this what it meant to be a mother?

“Hmph.”

Observing this farcical scene, the Empress Dowager let out a soft scoff, then gave an instruction to the nanny.

“Take the child away.”

Though she despised both the Empress and General Ning, the child was innocent. He bore no fault for the circumstances of his birth.

In the future, once matters within the palace had settled, the child would be sent to a modest household to be raised. This would save him from being entangled in the cruelty of his venomous parents.
