Chapter 499: Chapter 112 Angry Wei Zheng_1
Qin Shou nodded, entered the Ghost Gate, and headed straight towards the Rewarding Division. From a distance, Qin Shou could see a palace on the Rewarding Division’s mountain, with countless ghosts queued up in front of the door, waiting to enter and receive judgment.
Accompanied by Black and White Impermanence, Qin Shou didn’t need to queue. He rushed through the crowd and charged into the grand hall of the Rewarding Division, only to be startled upon entry—there were countless rooms!
In the center of the hall, there sat a man in a green robe, engrossed in a book he held in his hands.
Qin Shou tiptoed to peek into the rooms, and saw that each room contained a green-robed figure judging a ghost. Some ghosts came out looking worried, while others emerged joyously, all heading towards the next great hall, the Punishing Division.
Just then, Black Impermanence whispered, "Don’t bother looking, the ones in the rooms are all avatars. The master of the Rewarding Division is Wei Zheng, the one reading the book in front of you."
Qin Shou had heard of Wei Zheng, but that was the Wei Zheng from Earth. As for the one before him, he wasn’t sure which Wei Zheng this was. He decided to just treat him as a stranger.
So, Qin Shou approached and asked, "Hey, Brother He, enjoying your book?"
Upon hearing this, Wei Zheng slightly raised his eyelids and inquired, "And you are?"
White Impermanence promptly stepped forward to say something but saw Wei Zheng wave his hand and utter a single word, "Scram!"
With a helpless expression, White Impermanence looked towards Qin Shou, who was taken aback and asked, "What’s going on here? Do colleagues undermine each other like this?"
White Impermanence gave a wry smile and telepathically explained, "Lord Rabbit, you might not be aware, but although our Judicial Division holds the greatest authority among the three judges, you’ve seen how we operate. We act on a whim..."
Qin Shou rolled his eyes and retorted, "This is the first time I’ve seen someone describe shirking their duties in such a dignified manner, shameless indeed."
With a dry laugh, White Impermanence continued, "Master Wei has always been single-minded; once he believes in something, not even death can sway him. He has long disapproved of our methods, so..."
Black Impermanence added, "That’s right, it’s good enough that he hasn’t taken action against us. Lord Rabbit, look, maybe you should try speaking to him yourself?"
Upon hearing this, Qin Shou realized, oh boy, he thought bringing those two would make things easier, but they turned out to be a hindrance. He glared and exclaimed, "Why didn’t you mention your feud earlier? If I’d known, I would have come by myself! Now look, he’s seen us together, so if I approach him, the result would likely be the same, wouldn’t it?"
Black and White Impermanence shared a resigned smile, signaling, you’re right.
Seeing the two looking as if they deserved a beating, Qin Shou suddenly had a stroke of inspiration and telepathically proposed, "Hey, do me a favor, will you?"
Black and White Impermanence exchanged a glance. Neither of them was a fool; seeing the cunning gleam in Rabbit’s eyes, they knew he was up to no good. They shook their heads in unison, refusal!
Qin Shou said, "Don’t be hasty to refuse. If you agree to help me, consider it a favor owed to you. I can return it to you later, right?"
The two looked at each other once more, tacit understanding between them, both seeing the same message in the depths of the other’s heart: "This rabbit is willing to bleed so much; he’s definitely not up to any good, we must not agree!"
So, the two shook their heads again.
Seeing this, Qin Shou also felt helpless.
If it was like when they first met, he would have simply used force until they agreed. But now, they had taken care of him for some time, without merit there was at least the effort. Besides, the Rabbit especially valued emotional bonds; so now, there was no way he could bring himself to harm them.
Since he couldn’t appeal to their emotions, Qin Shou could only look at the two pitifully and whispered, "You’ve seen the situation in Fenghuo City. So many innocent people were brutally killed, their souls taken away. Is this a small matter?"
"To put it bluntly," Qin Shou said, "this is due to your negligence in supervision. How could you allow someone else to pick the fruits that are your responsibility?
On a more personal note, they’re stealing your business! If everyone starts doing that, what use does the Netherworld have for you? Wouldn’t it save a lot of money to just fire you?"
Hearing Qin Shou’s words, Black and White Impermanence were rendered speechless. Although they always felt that what the rabbit was saying was a bit of a stretch, there seemed to be some truth in it.
Before they could agree, they heard Wei Zheng, who had been silent until now, say, "Someone is harvesting human souls?"
Upon hearing this, Qin Shou immediately responded, "That’s right! In Fenghuo City! An entire city’s people, just like that, frozen to death, and nearly all their souls were taken. Only one slipped through the net and is now in our Netherworld. Judge Wei, are you going to handle this matter?"
At these words, Wei Zheng’s brows furrowed deeply as he said, "Oh? Is this true?"
Qin Shou nodded eagerly and exaggeratedly added, "Wei Zheng, I know you were once a great official during the Tang Dynasty. Now, let’s set the official matters aside and talk about personal feelings. Fenghuo City was part of the Tang Dynasty, wasn’t it? The Tang soldiers stationed there suffered so much defending the frontiers. Now, the Tibetan Capital has cut off your Tang Dynasty’s route to the east and west, confining Fenghuo City for decades. How could you just stand by and do nothing? Doesn’t your conscience hurt?"
Wei Zheng opened his mouth to speak...
But Qin Shou did not give Wei Zheng a chance to speak and continued, "You don’t need to say anything. I know what you’re going to say. Even if you can do nothing because of your position, how can you bear to watch those heroes who defended the Tang territory and its people for decades, from young soldiers to white-haired warriors, not lose to the Tibetan army but instead die at the hands of cultivators or ’Immortals,’ demons, and monsters?"
Wei Zheng tried to say something again.
Qin Shou went on, "You don’t need to speak. I know what you’re going to say. Even if you can only watch because of your position, can you really stand by and see these heroes’ souls snatched away, unable to even enter the cycle of reincarnation? Do you really plan to turn a blind eye, act the coward, and Ignore it all?"
Wei Zheng’s eyes turned red at this, and he tried to speak.
Qin Shou shouted, "You don’t need to speak! I know what you’re going to say. I just want to ask, wasn’t it because of their sacrifice at the border, shedding blood and skull, that you could enjoy your later years in peace? Now that you’re important, what, you pretend not to know? Touch your conscience and tell me, don’t you feel guilty?"
Wei Zheng tried to speak again, but Qin Shou interrupted him once more with a shout, "You don’t—"
"Shut up!" Wei Zheng overpowered Qin Shou’s voice with an even louder shout, stood up abruptly, his beard and hair bristling, his eyes fierce with overwhelming authority as he declared, "When the soldiers of the Tang Dynasty die on the battlefield, that is an honorable death!"
After saying that, he switched tones and cursed, "Damn your ancestors, what the hell use is using magic? I can do it too! Rabbit, what’s the name of that soul you said is still around? I’ll take you to him!"
Seeing this, Qin Shou couldn’t help but laugh and said, "I don’t know him; I only remember an old soldier in tattered armor."
At the same time, Qin Shou waved his hand, and a humanoid sculpture appeared, the very old soldier in question.
Slapping his thigh, Wei Zheng said, "I remember now, I just reviewed his case. He’s gone to the Punishing Division! Hurry, let’s not let that fool Zhong Kui throw him into Hell! That would make him hard to find!"
With that, Wei Zheng took off running.
Black and White Impermanence stood gaping at all that had happened, never expecting the matter would be resolved so abruptly.
Qin Shou shot them a glance and said, "What are you staring for? Let’s go! With Wei Zheng leading the way, this should be easy to handle."
Black and White Impermanence exchanged looks and let out a wry smile, their expressions immensely peculiar.
