Chapter 24: Chapter 24 So That’s How It Is_1
After pouring, Qin Shou found that there were still several small black spheres rolling around in the cups. Qin Shou grinned and said, "I poured too vigorously, I can’t let them see this; it’s too easy to give myself away."
Qin Shou quickly looked for two sticks, trying to remove them...
Just then, footsteps approached, and Qin Shou’s hand trembled. He swiftly threw the sticks away and stood with his hands behind his back as if nothing had happened.
He then saw Chang’e walk in. Seeing Qin Shou’s sneaky appearance, she frowned and said, "Yu’er, what are you doing? We have guests. You should at least show some hospitality."
Qin Shou glanced at the two cups of tea unconsciously.
When Chang’e saw them, she immediately laughed and said, "You do have good intentions. I was planning to serve two cups of tea as a gesture. It’s good that you have prepared them; I’ll just take them. By the way, what do you think of the wooden cups I carved from stone? Aren’t they pretty?"
Qin Shou said, "Pretty, incredibly pretty!"
Chang’e smiled coyly and said, "You’re such a smooth talker."
After that, Chang’e was about to take the blankets, but Qin Shou quickly hugged them with one arm each and said, "We have guests, and you are now the host of the house. I should do this."
Chang’e rolled her eyes at Qin Shou and said, "What host? You’re making a fuss about nothing."
Then she happily hopped away, but the moment she neared the cave entrance, she immediately composed herself, walking with poise and once more adopting a cold, distant demeanor.
Qin Shou marveled at this instant transformation and muttered to himself, "Damn... that’s real magic, even more impressive than Sun Wukong’s seventy-two transformations! Without changing her face, she looks like a completely different person... Women are unfathomable."
"What are you looking at? Hurry up," Chang’e turned her head and caught a glimpse of Qin Shou. In that moment of turning, she melted like ice and snow, becoming the familiar and playful Chang’e.
Warmed by the sight, Qin Shou thought, "Perhaps, this is a woman’s natural protective instinct. It’s better this way; only I can see the beauty of this girl, heh heh..."
Feeling pleased with himself, Qin Shou hurried over. Chang’e gave a suppressed laugh and switched her demeanor again, turning frosty.
Once they left the cave, Chang’e set down the two cups of tea and said indifferently, "Star Monarch, please enjoy the tea."
Qin Shou kept an eye on the cups of tea, fearing a mistake. Once he confirmed that Chang’e had inadvertently done the right thing, Qin Shou breathed a sigh of relief, jumped into Chang’e’s arms, nestled in, and squinted his eyes, playing the role of a quiet rabbit.
Though Taibai Star Monarch looked advanced in years, one should not judge immortals by their appearance; a white beard does not necessarily signify old age.
But those squinty, seemingly lecherous eyes, Qin Shou couldn’t help but find them suspicious.
Qin Shou thought, "Drink up, have a lot. I, the Rabbit Lord, have not squeezed this out easily, and it’s still warm."
Taibai Star Monarch had no idea what the cunning rabbit was plotting. Indeed, he had looked at Chang’e for a bit longer than usual.
There was no helping it; to him, Chang’e was indeed the most beautiful fairy he had seen in his years as an immortal... Everyone has a love for beauty, so he did not shy away and brazenly took his time looking.
Little did he know that these glances had caught the attention of a certain sly rabbit.
"Thank you for your hospitality, fairy," Taibai Star Monarch said with a slight smile. He picked up the tea, took a sip, pursed his lips, and his eyebrows knitted slightly.
Chang’e saw Taibai Star Monarch act this way and said, "Star Monarch, the moon only has osmanthus flowers and dew, so that is all I can offer as hospitality. If there is any lack of courtesy, please forgive me."
Upon hearing this, Taibai Star Monarch’s frown unfurled, and he laughed heartily, "I am not a picky person. Having something to drink is enough for me. It’s just that the taste, when drinking it, is indeed quite unique..."
As he spoke, Taibai Star Monarch smacked his lips, feeling as though the fragrance of the osmanthus flowers was mixed with something else.
Chang’e laughed and said, "Perhaps, the osmanthus flowers on the moon are different from those in other places."
Taibai Star Monarch nodded and replied, "Perhaps so."
Then he picked up his tea cup, wanting to see what was different about the moon’s osmanthus flowers compared to those from other places, and upon inspection, he exclaimed in surprise, "What is this? Osmanthus balls?"
After saying this, Taibai Star Monarch pointed it out to Chang’e for her to see.
Chang’e took one look and was momentarily stunned. What was that?
Little black spheres dotted with golden threads of osmanthus...
Others might not know, but Chang’e was aware.
Although Qin Shou hardly ever pooped no matter what he ate, Chang’e had seen rabbit droppings when she was in the mortal realm...
So, with just a glance, Chang’e recognized what it was.
She glanced at Qin Shou, who was bowing his head, counting his fingers very seriously, as if he knew nothing about it.
Chang’e reacted very swiftly. Regardless of whether Qin Shou did this on purpose or not, she would definitely not speak of it.
Therefore, Chang’e calmly grabbed Qin Shou’s little tail and gave it a firm tug, while maintaining her composure, said, "Yes, they are osmanthus balls made using a special technique."
Taibai Star Monarch chuckled and said, "I see. Fairy Chang’e, there is still half a month until the fifteenth day of the seventh month. Are you prepared?"
Chang’e shook her head slightly and said, "Although I have danced before, it has been many years. I am not sure how much I still remember. This sudden imperial edict is quite challenging..."
Taibai Star Monarch nodded slightly and said, "I thought so, but there’s no choice. The imperial command is not easy to fulfill, so you will have to prepare well."
Qin Shou, listening to this, faintly sensed something fishy, so he asked, "Star Monarch, our fairy has been here for who knows how many years, and I’ve not seen anyone caring for her. What suddenly made them remember our fairy?"
Qin Shou used ’our’ so naturally that Chang’e had no reaction at all. Perhaps she too felt the same way.
Taibai Star Monarch looked at Qin Shou and Chang’e with slight surprise, somewhat confused about this master-servant relationship, but still he said, "In fact, many people have long forgotten about the fairy residing on the moon. However, recently someone ascended and during their crossing of the Ascension Bridge, they accidentally fell onto the moon. At that time, a heavenly soldier sent them back to the Earthly Immortal Realm. Normally, this wouldn’t be anything unusual since every year there are people who fall from the Ascension Bridge, but falling onto the moon, that’s a first."
Hearing this, Qin Shou felt a chill in his heart. So many years? That must have been an endless amount of time, and in all those years, only one fell? In that moment, Qin Shou felt his hopes of picking up coal to rub on his body, saving people from danger by coincidence, and incidentally making a fortune all crumbled away.
Taibai Star Monarch continued, "However, that person was a disciple of the Wuliang Patriarch. Although the Wuliang Patriarch does not hold a position among the immortals of the Heavenly Court, he still holds considerable influence in the Immortal Realm. It’s unclear what went through his mind when he suddenly came to Yunxiao Palace and mentioned that he wanted to present the Jade Emperor with a grand gift."
