Chapter 120: Chapter 120 The Old Ginger is Still Spicy_1
With that, Qin Shou adopted an "I am Heaven" attitude.
The fortune-teller was momentarily speechless... then chuckled and said, "I have a rule not to divine one’s status. That’s the rule for most fortune-tellers... We earn our keep with our skill, not by questioning the identity of our clients."
Qin Shou didn’t know whether this was true or false, but it didn’t matter. What mattered were the words written on this guy’s table!
Ten times compensation for an incorrect reading—now, that was key!
So Qin Shou said, stressing each word, "Can you really tell fortunes?"
The fortune-teller tilted his head back and declared, "Of course, I can!"
Qin Shou nodded and asked, "What if the reading is inaccurate?"
The fortune-teller slapped the table with confidence and proclaimed, "Ten times compensation!"
Qin Shou followed suit with a table slap, "Good! On those terms, divine something small worth a hundred thousand Spirit Crystals for me, Rabbit Lord!"
Upon hearing that, the fortune-teller’s confidence obviously wavered, his legs even gave out for a moment, but that was just for a split second. He quickly regained composure and with narrowed eyes said, "Only a hundred thousand Spirit Crystals, indeed a trifle."
The fortune-teller couldn’t figure out Qin Shou’s true status but intuitively felt that the damn rabbit was bluffing, probably didn’t have the means to pay for such an expensive reading. So, he went along with the charade.
Qin Shou rolled his eyes internally, this old guy really could blow his own trumpet!
But Qin Shou liked just that sort of thing!
Thereupon, Qin Shou said, "Very well, help me divine where my treasure worth a hundred thousand Spirit Crystals, my cell phone, has gone?"
"Alright, let me calculate... Hmm... Eh? Cell phone? What kind of magic treasure is that?" the fortune-teller asked with a clueless expression.
Qin Shou flashed a grin and said, "That’s a mighty fine treasure, I rely on it to get by in life. It can transmit my voice thousands of miles, video call over ten thousand miles, check out girls, watch videos, view Island Nation... *cough* play games, it can do everything. Anyway, stop your yapping and calculate!"
The fortune-teller rolled his eyes and said, "How can I divine something when I don’t even know what it is you’re talking about?"
Qin Shou replied, "I don’t care, you accepted the job, so you’ve got to divine it for me. If you can’t... hmm."
In the midst of their talk, Qin Shou pulled out a tree twig he had casually broken off to use as a toothpick. Since he didn’t have any notable magic treasures on him, he might as well use it to bluff the reader for a while.
The fortune-teller frowned upon seeing the rabbit’s blustering demeanor, holding a little twig and acting cocksure—could it be that there was something extraordinary about this twig? But with his insight and a sweep of his Divine Sense, it just looked like a regular twig to him!
But, a regular twig, giving this rabbit such confidence? The rabbit’s every move didn’t seem those of a fool; could it be that the twig as a magic treasure had reached the state of returning to simplicity and truth? Was he unable to distinguish it for what it was?
The fortune-teller had been in Shushan for quite some time and had mostly encountered bookish types, earning a fortune along the way, yet he had never met such a cunning fake student as this one. Consequently, he subconsciously categorized the rabbit among the bookworms, naturally trusting a scholar’s character and not expecting them to hoax him with a fake item.
And so, without a word from the rabbit, he filled his own head with countless possibilities.
However, the fortune-teller maintained a poker face, uttering indifferently, "Rabbit, is there anything so incredible about this twig of yours?"
Qin Shou burst out laughing, "Why don’t you give it a try and find out?"
The fortune-teller looked at the rabbit’s confident expression, its unmitigated arrogance, and the slight hint of mischief and excitement as if it was looking forward to him trying to weasel out so it could show off. The fortune-teller’s heart grew uneasy, and squinting his eyes, he said, "Rabbit, I, a celestial being, always take payment before fortune-telling."
Qin Shou was no exception and, shaking his head, responded, "Payment first, fortune-telling after? What kind of fortune-telling is that? Are you afraid I, Lord Rabbit, will have you tell my fortune without paying you?"
During this exchange, Qin Shou looked fiercely indignant as if he were truly enraged.
The fortune-teller was starting to waver; he genuinely couldn’t gauge what this rabbit was all about. He’d tried to foresee the rabbit’s origin, but all he got was a blank—nothing at all! The more elusive the rabbit seemed, the more he believed there was nothing ordinary about it... at least, it wasn’t just posturing.
With this in mind, the fortune-teller raised an eyebrow and declared, "I just calculated a moment ago, and your cell phone isn’t on Shushan but atop the Heavenly Mountain of the Earthly Immortal World. You might want to check there..."
Upon hearing this, Qin Shou’s eyes nearly rolled back into the void, incredulous. Speaking nonsense, and this guy was actually following along with even bigger tall tales!
Where was the cell phone? Qin Shou knew very well—it was still on Earth! How could it have ended up in the Earthly Immortal Realm?
So, Qin Shou shouted, "Fortune-teller! Do you take me for a fool?"
The fortune-teller with an air of serenity replied, "I, a celestial being, have never erred in my fortunes. Rabbit, if you think I’ve made a mistake, go search the Heavenly Mountain. If you can’t find it, then you can come back and blame me. Blustering about without proving anything is hardly righteous."
Qin Shou chuckled, "Hardly righteous?"
Qin Shou slammed the table and exclaimed, "My cell phone is at home, yet you tell me it’s on the Heavenly Mountain? Want to go to Wenqu Palace with me to see what a cell phone is? Can’t figure it out and still try to deceive me? Do you think I, Lord Rabbit, am easy to bully? Today, you’ll witness the might of Lord Rabbit’s magic treasure! ’With one command, all my companions followed me up!’"
Seeing that the rabbit was about to unleash some major spell, the fortune-teller hastily interjected, "Hold on!"
Qin Shou didn’t have any actual magic treasure to unleash; it was all a bluff, and even if the fortune-teller hadn’t called out, he had nothing to release. He then stopped, feigning anger, "What do you propose?"
"This... can I compensate you with money?" the fortune-teller said, his forehead glistening with nervous sweat. He’d been conning people all over Shushan; he hadn’t just deceived one person. He’d stumbled upon an exam answer key once and sold it to the disciples of Wenchang Palace by the hundreds, with each copy costing a hundred Spirit Crystals. That amounted to tens of thousands of Spirit Crystals in income!
It was a substantial income, but his crime was no less significant. He wasn’t afraid of any magic treasure the rabbit might have, but rather that making too much noise could draw the attention of the Star Monarchs of Wenqu and Wenchang, leading to his downfall. And if it attracted the scrutiny of the Heavenly Court, his days would be numbered.
However, he would never agree to a tenfold compensation of a hundred thousand Spirit Crystals, so the fortune-teller said, "I haven’t seen the actual phone, so I can’t price it based on the amount you’ve said. I can only base it on a fundamental price, one hundred Spirit Crystals. Since I failed to calculate it, I’ll pay you tenfold: one thousand Spirit Crystals. How’s that?"
Upon hearing this, Qin Shou’s heart skipped a beat in excitement, internally screaming in delight, "I’m rich!"
Still, keeping a cool demeanor, Qin Shou replied with disdain, "One thousand Spirit Crystals?"
The fortune-teller was cunning and seemed to have caught on to something. Raising an eyebrow, he asked, "Rabbit, what’s your name? Are you really a student from Shushan?"
Qin Shou’s heart skipped, and he thought, this old fraudster is truly formidable... as he pondered how to salvage the situation...
Suddenly, a whistling sound tore through the sky, causing both Qin Shou and the fortune-teller to tense up.
