Chapter 259: A Will to be Announced
Chapter 259: Chapter 259: A Will to be Announced
Tang Yu pressed her lips together, it was already midnight and Ye Yuli still hadn’t had dinner. He was so worried about her, but could she really offer the same level of concern in return?
She knew that at most, she and Ye Yuli were very good friends; they could not go back to how things used to be...
Tang Yu looked at the dishes in front of her, all her favorites, and felt even guiltier knowing that they were personally made by Ye Yuli, "This is too much."
"You need to keep up your nutrition. Have you looked at yourself in the mirror? You’ve lost so much weight." Ye Yuli added more food into her bowl. "Eat more. If you’re full, I’ll accompany you for a walk on the beach."
Tang Yu didn’t touch her chopsticks but looked at him, and as she did, tears began to fall.
Ye Yuli’s heart tightened, "What’s wrong? Doesn’t it taste good?"
"I... I haven’t started eating yet..." Tang Yu choked up, covering her eyes with one hand as tears streamed through her fingers.
"I know you’re suffering, but no matter how hard it is, you still need to eat. Otherwise, your mom, knowing this from above, would be heartbroken." Ye Yuli pulled down her hand and wiped the tears from her face with a tissue.
It took a while for Tang Yu to calm down before she started to eat.
After dinner, Ye Yuli took her for a walk along the beach.
The streetlights shone on the beach, a stretch of shallow water and the dim horizon beyond.
Their feet sank into the soft sand as they walked along the beach, leaving footprints behind.
Tang Yu remembered how Ye Yuli used to take her to the beach often when they were dating.
She drew an arrow piercing a heart in the sand and looked up to see Ye Yuli surfing stylishly in the distance.
But it all seemed to have happened in the last century...
"Look at that."
Tang Yu came back to reality and followed Ye Yuli’s gaze to the night sky, where a bright star shone.
"When people die, they become stars in the sky, and the brightest one recently is your mom. She is watching over you from heaven, guarding you."
Tang Yu knew it was a tale for children, yet she wished it were true.
She stared at that star, her eyes moistening.
"Yuli, you have to live well in the future."
Ye Yuli couldn’t help but chuckle, "You’re worrying needlessly."
Tang Yu looked at him, his tall figure and aloof face were very attractive.
She had been drawn to him initially, but now her heart no longer fluttered.
Her heart was so tired, she didn’t even know what it was good for anymore...
"Yuli, don’t be so nice to me. I can’t make any promises to you..."
"Can’t even be friends?"
"Friends?" Tang Yu was surprised that he said that.
"What else?" Ye Yuli said, smiling as he touched her soft hair.
But inside, he felt bitter.
Only by doing so could he stay close to her and protect her.
When they parted ways at her room’s door,
Ye Yuli looked at her tenderly, "If you can’t sleep, call me and I’ll sing you a lullaby."
"Would that work?"
"We can try it out."
Tang Yu’s hand paused on the doorknob, ready to open it, but she stopped and turned back to look at Ye Yuli’s patiently waiting face and asked, "Are you going to marry Zhou Qinghua? I don’t mean anything by it, I just think you should consider carefully if you don’t love her. Zhou Qinghua has a bad temper."
"Very bad, even malicious at heart," said Ye Yuli truthfully, then countered, "Do I have any compelling reason to get married?"
Tang Yu nodded, knowing she was being overly concerned.
She turned and went back into her room, closing the door behind her.
Sitting on the edge of the bed, she looked at the tightly closed door, her spirits low. She didn’t want Ye Yuli to marry a woman he didn’t like and be unhappy for the rest of his life.
So how could she listen to Yu Zhaohui and marry Ye Sihan?
Even if it was for the sake of the children, without love, it would only end in tragedy.
Whose heart was comforted by her mother’s death?
Now that she was dead, had Ye Sihan gotten his revenge? Was he excited enough to celebrate?
The happier they were, the more pain Tang Yu felt.
Indeed, she couldn’t sleep at night, but she didn’t call Ye Yuli. She curled up alone in her bed, licking her wounds.
Whenever she thought of Yu Zhaohui, tears would uncontrollably flow.
In the end, she wasn’t even allowed to see the children one last time...
She was a complete failure as a daughter...
Tang Yu tossed and turned, finally dozing off in the early hours of the morning.
The next day, Tang Yu left the villa.
She couldn’t stay at Ye Yuli’s place forever. Even as friends, she could only stay temporarily for a day or two.
Ye Yuli dropped her off at the entrance to the compound and watched as she walked further and further away from him.
Unable to resist, he got out of the car and called out to her, "Xiaoyu!"
Tang Yu turned around, "What is it?"
"What are your plans for the future? Are you going to stick with the children?" Ye Yuli asked.
Guarding the children meant being trapped in the capital for life, with her old age as bleak as the present, devoid of any hope.
"I only have the children now," Tang Yu said after a few seconds of silence.
Ye Yuli then knew her response.
Unable to bear it, Tang Yu looked away and headed for the elevator.
Arriving back at the rented house, she lay down on the bed weakly, gazing blankly at the ceiling.
What had she told Ye Sihan at Yu Zhaohui’s funeral hall?
——"Even if I end up living like a beggar, I will never beg you for anything!"
She had been too grief-stricken to say such words then.
And the hatred for Ye Sihan!
Why, even after her mother had died, did he still have to torment her? After all, she was the children’s biological grandmother. Didn’t he care at all?
Yes, Ye Sihan was heartless, a man who would disown his kin, who wanted nothing to do with his own father, so what of a grandmother?
And what about the children’s birth mother that day?
Tang Yu’s heart felt painfully constricted.
If she didn’t appeal to Ye Sihan, how could she see the children?
But even if she did ask, could she really see them?
In the hall of mourning, should she have not blurted out those impulsive words...
With Yu Zhaohui gone, Tang Yu’s longing for the children grew even stronger, and the pain brought tears rolling down.
She lay in bed until the following afternoon before she wearily got up.
Ye Yuli sent a message last night asking if she’d eaten dinner.
She lied and said she had, that she made it herself.
But that was a lie.
She hadn’t been home for so long, everything in the fridge, even the fast food, had expired.
She couldn’t tell if the eggs were good or bad.
And the green vegetables had long turned yellow, inedible.
Only Yu Zhaohui used to stock her fridge full of food, and now, no one would do that ever again...
Tang Yu threw everything in the fridge into the trash bin, wanting to eat but her mind was too sluggish to decide.
She even thought pessimistically, why does a person need to eat? Why must people have desires?
With nothing, there would be no suffering...
The ringing of her mobile phone came from inside the room.
Tang Yu picked up the phone and saw it was Ye Yuli calling. She answered, "What’s up?"
"When did you wake up?"
"Just now."
Just waking up meant she hadn’t slept the first half of the night.
Otherwise, with Tang Yu’s normal constitution, she couldn’t have possibly slept till now.
"I’m at the entrance of the complex, join me for a meal," Ye Yuli said.
"Even for a meal you need company."
"Come on, I’m waiting for you."
Although Tang Yu knew Ye Yuli didn’t need company for a meal, as a friend, she didn’t refuse.
It spared her the trouble of wracking her brain over what to eat; there was already a ready meal.
They went to a high-end restaurant, and Tang Yu didn’t say anything; after all, that was just typical spending for Ye Yuli.
"What did you eat last night?"
Tang Yu, who was busy tucking into her food, paused momentarily, "Just grabbed something casual."
Ye Yuli knew she wasn’t telling the truth, and it was very likely that she hadn’t eaten at all.
He didn’t call her out, "Do you want to act? I saw the period drama you were in, your acting was even better than the lead actress."
"Did you not see, I got quite a lashing online."
"Getting flak means you acted too well," Ye Yuli said. "Whenever you’re ready to go, I’ll help you arrange it."
"Won’t it be... too much trouble?" Tang Yu wanted to act, but was afraid of inconveniencing Ye Yuli.
"What’s the trouble? It’s just a phone call away."
"Thank you."
"You’re joining me for a meal, it’s only fair," Ye Yuli’s eyes glinted with a gentle luster.
In the light, they were a pleasing sight.
Tang Yu didn’t say when she would start acting; with Yu Zhaohui just passing away, she was not in the mood.
But staying at home, her mind would always wander to the children, unsure how to solve the issue.
Should she numb herself with acting?
Two more days passed in her rented room, still undecided, when a call from an unknown number came through.
Tang Yu thought, is it another call for makeup work?
She answered, intending to refuse.
"Is this Miss Tang Yu? I am the attorney for Mr. Ye Xianghua," the caller was a mature man.
Tang Yu was surprised, "What’s the matter?"
"Mr. Ye Xianghua has a will to be disclosed, and your presence is required."
"Where?"
"The Ye Mansion."
Tang Yu paused again.
The Ye Mansion... they were asking her to go to the Ye Mansion? She had been driven out over a month ago, could she really go back?
Would Ye Sihan agree?
Of course, if he hadn’t agreed, the attorney wouldn’t have said so.
But why hold the disclosure of the will at the Ye Mansion?
Was it... Ye Xianghua’s idea?
Was this the only way she would have a chance to return to the Ye Mansion? To be with her quadruplets?
Since parting at the cemetery, Tang Yu had not seen Ye Xianghua or even made a phone call.
Tang Yu thought there was no need because he was her mother’s husband. Ye Xianghua had accepted her because of her mother.
With her mother gone, what relationship did she and Ye Xianghua have left?
