Chapter 129: Chapter 129 - Eight lives

Behind them, zombies poured out of the classroom, tumbling over desks and chairs, their lifeless eyes locked onto their prey. Some crawled on all fours like rabid animals, snarling and snapping their jaws.

Muchen barely had time to glance back before Shao grabbed his wrist and yanked him forward.

"The stairs—go!"

They sprinted toward the stairwell, but as soon as they reached the doorway, they came to a skidding halt.

A new wave of undead was rushing down from the upper floors. Dozens of them barreled forward, their bodies slamming into one another as they tumbled down the steps, driven by sheer hunger.

Muchen’s heart dropped.

Shao clenched his jaw. Trapped.

Zombies in front. Zombies behind.

Muchen’s grip tightened on the IV stand in his hands. Fighting was out of the question. There were too many.

His eyes darted around the corridor, searching for an escape.

Then he saw it.

A elevator at the end of the hall.

"Shao—the elevator!"

Shao saw it at the same time.

Without hesitation, they bolted for it.

The undead shrieked behind them, their feet slapping against the tiles.

Muchen reached the elevator first and slammed the button. The silver doors groaned as they slowly started to open.

Too slow.

Shao turned back. The nearest zombie was already lunging toward him.

Muchen grabbed his wrist and yanked him inside just as the rotting fingers of a former student grazed Shao’s sleeve.

The elevator doors slammed shut.

Darkness swallowed them.

For a moment, the only sound was their ragged breathing.

Then—

BANG.

Something slammed against the metal from the outside.

Muchen and Shao flinched as the elevator rocked slightly.

The undead were pounding on the doors, their shrieks muffled by the thick metal.

Shao reached out and stabbed the button for the third floor.

The elevator lurched, carrying them upward.

Muchen leaned against the wall, wiping sweat from his brow.

"That was too close," he muttered.

Shao wasn’t listening. His eyes were locked on the dim display above the doors.

Second floor... Third floor.

The elevator ding

The doors slid open.

Shao and Muchen barely had a second to react.

The third-floor hallway was crawling with the undead.

Dozens of them stood in the dim corridor, backs hunched, heads twitching at unnatural angles. Some were former students, their uniforms tattered and stained with blood. Others were teachers, their stiff postures now eerily distorted.

At first, they remained still.

Then—one by one—their heads snapped around.

Lifeless, sunken eyes locked onto the two fresh bodies standing in the elevator.

For a second, there was silence.

Then, a sharp, guttural screech broke through the air.

The zombies charged.

Shao slammed the buttons frantically, trying to close the doors, but the mechanism was too slow.

"Go!" Muchen grabbed his wrist and yanked him forward.

They dove out of the elevator just as the first zombie lunged inside, slamming against the back wall.

The undead poured into the now-useless elevator like a trap had been sprung, some getting crushed in the narrowing doorway, their limbs twisting grotesquely as the doors tried to shut.

But there were still too many in the hallway.

Muchen and Shao bolted, sprinting past open classroom doors and overturned desks. The corridor ahead was just as bad—undead lurched from the shadows, drawn by the commotion.

They had seconds before they were completely surrounded.

"Here!" Muchen grabbed the nearest classroom door and shoved it open.

Shao jumped inside after him, and together, they slammed it shut.

BAM!

The door shuddered as bodies threw themselves against it.

Shao grabbed a chair and wedged it under the handle. It wouldn’t last long.

Panting, Muchen scanned the classroom. The desks were overturned, a few student bags and books scattered across the floor. The windows at the front were shattered, broken glass littering the tiles.

Shao, however, was already moving.

He ran to the balcony.

Without hesitation, he jumped onto the railing.

Shao hoisted himself onto the railing, his hands gripping the edge as he peered over the balcony. His heart pounded in his chest as he searched for any sign of his brother.

"Zhizhi!" he called, his voice raw with desperation.

For a moment, there was only silence—just the distant moans of the undead and the pounding on the classroom door behind him.

Then—

"Brother!"

A familiar voice rang out from the opposite balcony.

Shao’s chest tightened as he turned his head sharply toward the sound. Through the narrow gaps in the concrete railing, he caught a glimpse of a tall, muscular boy in a school uniform—his little brother, Shao Zhi.

Relief crashed over him like a tidal wave.

He’s alive.

Shao Zhi’s dark eyes were wide with urgency, his face streaked with sweat and dirt. He gripped the balcony railing, glancing behind him nervously before turning back.

"Shao!" Muchen called, his voice edged with panic. "They’re breaking through!"

Shao turned just in time to see the classroom door crack, the chair under the handle already splintering under the weight of the undead.

They were out of time.

He clenched his fists and took a shaky breath. "Muchen, we can jump from balcony to balcony to reach them."

Muchen’s expression twisted in disbelief. "Are you insane? One wrong step and we’re dead!"

Shao ignored him. He planted a foot on the concrete ledge and pulled himself up.

Muchen swore under his breath, glancing back at the barricaded door. The wood was already splintering.

Shit.

"Fine! But if we die, I’m haunting you in the afterlife!"

Shao didn’t respond. His focus was entirely on the next balcony. It wasn’t too far—maybe two meters away—but in this situation, it might as well have been a canyon.

He took a deep breath, bent his knees—

And jumped.

The wind whipped past his face as he sailed through the air. For a terrifying second, he felt weightless—like time had slowed down.

Then, his hands slammed against the cold railing.

His fingers slipped.

For a brief, heart-stopping moment, he thought he was going to fall.

But then, he tightened his grip, using his momentum to swing his leg up and over.

He landed hard on the balcony, his knees slamming against the rough concrete.

He made it.

Shao barely had time to recover before he turned back.

"Muchen, your turn!"

Muchen was pale as he climbed onto the railing, his hands shaking slightly.

"I really hate this," he muttered.

Then he jumped.

Shao reached out just in time, grabbing his wrist as his feet missed the edge. Muchen let out a startled gasp as he dangled over the open air.

"Pull me up! Pull me up!"

With a grunt, Shao yanked him over the railing. They collapsed onto the balcony floor, panting.

"Never again," Muchen wheezed.

Shao ignored him, already pushing himself up.

"We still have to keep moving."

Shao and Muchen didn’t stop.

Their muscles burned from the jumps, their breath came in ragged gasps, but they kept moving. The gaps between the balconies were getting wider, making each leap more treacherous. But Shao didn’t care.

He could see his brother.

Lu Zhi stood among a small group of students, his expression tense as he watched them approach.

Shao clenched his jaw and jumped again.

This time, the landing was rough—his knee slammed into the railing, sending a sharp jolt of pain through his leg. He hissed through his teeth but ignored it, throwing himself over.

Muchen landed beside him with a grunt.

Finally, they were there.

Shao barely had time to catch his breath before he rushed forward and grabbed his brother’s shoulders. His grip was tight, almost desperate.

His eyes frantically searched Shao Zhi’s face, his arms, his legs—checking for any sign of injuries.

His brother was unharmed.

Shao let out a shaky breath. His shoulders slumped with relief, and before he could stop himself, he pulled his brother into a hug.

"Thank God..." he murmured.

For a second, Lu Zhi stiffened in surprise.

Then, his arms came up, and he hugged his brother back.

It lasted only a moment, but it was enough.

Muchen, standing beside them, cleared his throat. "Hate to break up the family moment, but we’re still very much screwed."

Shao pulled back, his hands still gripping Shao Zhi’s shoulders. "How many of you are here?"

Lu Zhi’s face hardened. "Eight."

Shao exhaled sharply.

Eight kids. Some of them looked younger, their faces pale and terrified. They were pressed against the far wall, flinching at every Sound outside.

The moans of the undead were growing louder, creeping through the cracks in the door and the shattered windows. The infected weren’t going to stay on the other side of the door for long.

Shao took another deep breath, forcing himself to stay calm. He turned to his younger brother. "We need to get out of here. Now."

Lu Zhi nodded, his hands clenched into tight fists. "The roof," he said. "It’s the only place left. We blocked off the stairwell, but if we’re fast enough, we can climb up. And get down through the fire exit stairwell"

Muchen exhaled sharply. "And then what? Our car won’t fit them all."

"We’ll take the school bus," Shao Zhi shot him a glare. "You have a better idea?"

Muchen hesitated, then sighed. "Didn’t think so."
