Chapter 119: Chapter 119 - Mad dash

"We have to go. Now."

Shao grabbed Muchen’s wrist with one hand and snatched Hana’s with the other, dragging them both away from the corpse.

Hana barely had time to react before she found herself being yanked down the hall. But her instincts kicked in, and without even thinking—

—she reached out and grabbed a fistful of the doctor’s hair.

"OW!"

The young man yelped, his free hand frantically slapping at hers, trying to pry her off. "What the hell?! Let go!"

Muchen stared at her, incredulous. "Why the fuck are you dragging him along?! We don’t need deadweight!"

Hana shot him a scandalized look. "But he’s alive! He’s human! How can we just leave him here?!"

She hesitated, then threw a glance at the doctor, who was still gripping his broken iPad like it was his lifeline.

"...Even if he does seem kinda crazy."

The man, still wincing from her iron grip, huffed. "Excuse me?! I’m right here."

Muchen ran a frustrated hand through his hair. "Great. Just what we need. A zombie-obsessed idiot."

Shao exhaled sharply, tightening his grip on Muchen’s arm. "Less arguing. More running."

And with that, he pulled them all forward.

They ran through the dimly lit corridor, their hurried footsteps echoing against the sterile hospital walls. The air was thick with the stench of blood and something worse—something rotten.

As they reached a crossroads, Shao abruptly raised a hand, signaling everyone to halt.

Muchen, panting lightly, followed his gaze and peeked past the corner. His stomach clenched at the sight ahead.

A group of the dead—four, maybe five—were banging their heads and clawing at the glass of a VIP ward. Their movements were slow, almost lazy, but their persistence was terrifying.

Behind the glass, shadowy figures moved. People. There were still survivors inside.

Muchen leaned in, whispering into Shao’s ear. "There are people in there."

Shao’s jaw tightened. "We can’t save everyone. We need to get out and call for help."

He signaled for them to move toward the other hallway, keeping low and quiet.

They had barely taken a step—

"Hey! Hey, you there! Help! Help us!"

A woman’s desperate shouts pierced through the eerie silence.

Shao’s blood ran cold as he snapped his head toward the ward.

The zombies stopped.

For a second, everything was still.

Then—

They turned.

Their vacant, milky eyes locked onto them.

Their snarls deepened, and as one, the entire group lunged, charging toward them at full speed.

"FUCK!"

Muchen barely had time to react before Shao grabbed his wrist and yanked him back.

"RUN!"

The growls grew louder, the pounding of feet against the tile floor too close—too fast.

Shao didn’t hesitate. He yanked Muchen and Hana forward, forcing them to run. The young doctor, still clutching his cracked iPad, stumbled after them.

"Move, move!" Shao barked, his voice sharp with urgency.

Hana, gripping the bloodstained bedpan, gasped as the first zombie reached out. She ducked under its grasp, swinging wildly—

CRACK!

The metal pan collided with its jaw, sending teeth flying, but the creature didn’t fall. It snarled, snapping at her with broken gums.

"Shit! Shit! Someone get this thing off me!" she yelped, backpedaling.

Muchen, heart pounding, thrust the IV stand forward like a spear, aiming for its head. The sharp metal pole pierced through the zombie’s eye socket, sinking deep into its skull.

The thing twitched violently before collapsing.

"One down! Keep running!" Muchen panted.

Shao grabbed Hana by the collar and pulled her upright before dragging her forward. "Less screaming, more running!"

They sprinted down the hallway, but the horde wasn’t slowing down.

"Left! Take the left!" Shao ordered.

They swerved sharply, feet sliding on the blood-slicked floor.

The young doctor nearly slipped, but Hana grabbed him by the back of his coat, keeping him upright.

"What’s your name?!" she huffed, pulling him along.

"Qiu Yue!" he wheezed.

"Well, Qiu Yue, start running like your life depends on it—BECAUSE IT DOES!"

Behind them, the zombies were still gaining.

Muchen stole a glance over his shoulder. Their numbers were growing.

The ones from the VIP ward had joined the chase.

"Shit! They’re faster than I thought!" Muchen gasped.

Shao’s eyes darted around, searching for an escape. "Stairs. We need stairs."

Qiu Yue suddenly pointed ahead. "There! That door!"

Shao made a snap decision. "Go! Everyone in!"

They shoved through the metal door at the last second—just as the closest zombie lunged for Hana.

BAM!

Shao kicked the door shut, slamming it in the creature’s face. A sickening crunch followed as the thing’s nose shattered.

Muchen threw his weight against the door, securing the latch just as the undead began ramming into it.

"They’re not stopping!" Hana gasped.

Qiu Yue, still panting, adjusted his glasses. "That’s because they’re not actually dead. Their bodies are still functional even if their brains are half gone."

Muchen shot him a glare. "Great science lesson, Einstein. How do we stop them?"

Qiu Yue shrugged. "Decapitation? Fire? I haven’t done tests yet."

"We are NOT testing shit right now!" Shao snapped.

The metal door groaned as the zombies slammed into it again.

"This won’t hold forever. We need a plan—fast."

Thankfully, the stairwell wasn’t used by many. Not a single zombie was in sight. But Muchen looked down at the winding staircase that seemed to stretch on forever.

"Fuck... that’s a long way down. What if those things are waiting for us?"

A low growl echoed from somewhere below. They couldn’t tell exactly where it was coming from.

"We don’t have another choice. The car’s parked in the basement. Let’s just take it and drive to my brother’s school."

Muchen frowned at him. "And then what? We still need to find Yunfeng."

Shao shook his head. "The city’s probably barricaded by now. Yunfeng wouldn’t be able to get in. After rescuing my brother, we need to find enough food, water, and a safe place to take shelter."

Muchen just gaped at him. "You can’t be serious. We have to find Yunfeng."

"That’s not advisable."
