PAMPERED BY MY THREE BROTHERS: THE RETURN OF THE NEGLECTED HEIRESS -
Chapter 1833: End of an era
Chapter 1833: End of an era
"She... got away."
Zoren, Penny, Charles, Slater, Mark, and Angel did their best to catch up. Despite encountering enemies and even their own allies, they stopped for no one. However, even with their best efforts, there was no way for them to catch up.
Their eyes were wide, and the beating of their hearts slowed at the mere thought that Nathalie had gotten away.
Tonight was a perfect chance to end this once and for all. But now that she had escaped, they knew there would be a next time. And next time? They weren’t sure if they could get out of here unscathed.
"Damn it," Zoren breathed out through gritted teeth, his hands balled into tight fists.
At the same time, Angel and Mark, who had managed to find some bazookas, lowered them. Even if they fired at the chopper, it wouldn’t reach the aircraft. If anything, firing it might hurt their own men who were still fighting below.
Penny, on the other hand, drew a deep breath. She kept her eyes on the aircraft, swallowing the tension in her throat. Tonight, they had an advantage because Shawn folded and switched sides.
’What now?’ she wondered to herself, balling her hands into tight fists.
The question didn’t only linger with her but with everyone. Slater, for instance, clenched his teeth as he glared at the aircraft.
"No, I’m not letting her get away—" Just as Slater turned to leave, perhaps to find the nearest available aircraft in the area, Charles stopped him.
"Slater," Charles called, watching his son look in his direction. He shook his head at him and then shifted his eyes to everyone. "She got away, there’s that. And there’s no one to blame for that. Nathalie has been in this business, and getting away from a pickle is one of the things she has survived all these decades."
He nodded at them, huffing sharply. "This may mean it’s not over yet, but—"
BOOM!
The rest of his remarks rolled back in his throat as they heard a loud explosion in the distance. All of them flinched at the thunderous explosion, even though it came from far away.
Turning their heads, their eyes dilated as their complexions paled slightly in surprise. Their brows knitted, confused at what they were seeing.
There, in the sky, was the aircraft—the same one where Nathalie was—burning, its debris falling into the ocean. Such a sight looked so familiar, just like when Penny’s chopper exploded. It was just that, this time, they were sure who the person inside was.
"What?" they blurted out.
---
Meanwhile, on the cliff of the hill, Hugo clenched his teeth as he lowered a bazooka. With him was Mint, who had been whining and crying that she was tranquilized. Fortunately, she woke up and realized Hugo was with her.
And since Hugo was barely alive, the two of them had proceeded to go to the mansion. After all, Penny was kind enough to leave a motorcycle for them to use.
However, as they did, they caught a chopper leaving the mansion. In situations like this, their years of experience already told them who the person in the chopper was. Well, they also had to thank Atlas for that because somehow, Atlas was connected to the communication device left in the cabin.
"Die, bitch!"
Mint shouted as Hugo managed to shoot the aircraft down in just one try. Mint had already tried once, and it exploded into the ocean.
"You think we’re going to give you another chance to respawn!?" she harrumphed. "Over our dead body!"
Because literally, they would die if Nathalie managed to get away from here. That woman was just too evil to breathe the same air as them.
Hugo, on the other hand, leaned back. He was slumped on the ground, weakened by his injuries. His leg was cast with a makeshift cast that was made out of metal. However, thanks to Penny, he didn’t think he was going to die anytime soon.
He stared at the burning aircraft, the corners of his mouth curling up slightly. He may not know this, and he may not ever know it, but in his previous life, what shone in his eyes during his dying moment was the star-filled sky.
And right now, on the same day of his death, what his eyes were mirroring wasn’t the stars twinkling. Rather, it was a burning aircraft and its falling fragments.
"Hah..." he huffed heavily, snapping his eyes to Mint standing beside him. He chuckled and shook his head, shifting his eyes back to the sky.
"You started this and—" Mint suddenly bit her tongue, her face twisting at the sudden thought that crossed her mind. She turned her head and gazed down at him. "By the way, Second Brother, we’re sure that inside that aircraft is Nathalie Zorken, right?!"
She crouched beside him, leaning her face closer. "RIGHT?! We need to be sure before I celebrate. Otherwise, it’ll be humiliating to celebrate when the job isn’t done yet."
"Well." Hugo gulped and collapsed on his back, arms spread. He kept his eyes on the sky and shrugged. "First Brother said Nathalie would get away via chopper, because Penny plays too much and Zoren’s bordering on suicidal. Slater and Dad would be more focused on saving them than taking her down. So, they’ll fail."
He snapped his eyes at Mint. "So, there’s that."
"That’s it?" Her face soured. "Just because Atlas said that?"
"First Brother is always right," Hugo argued, shifting his eyes at the falling aircraft. He smirked. "He’s never wrong, but if he’s wrong tonight, then we’re all screwed."
Mint blinked and blinked, looking up, imagining the look on Atlas’s face. After a second, she nodded in conviction.
"What are you nodding about?" he asked.
She blinked at him and shrugged. "That if he’s wrong, we are honored to see him be wrong for once. After all, I always pray he trips whenever I watch him. It’s the same logic."
"Me too," Hugo nodded. "I mean, probably, everyone wants to see him trip after he opens his mouth."
"Heh. Hugo, if Penny marries me, you’re going to be my favorite brother-in-law," she quipped, looking at the sky again.
Hugo chuckled as he also looked away from her. The two of them watched how the aircraft fell in silence, with Mint still standing while Hugo lay flat on his back.
"I can’t believe it’s over," he whispered, earning a hum from her. "It’s like watching the end of an era."
"Because it is the end of an era," she whispered back, letting out a deep breath. "Probably, Nathalie doesn’t believe it either. After all, compared to me, who spent so many years tracking her down, she’s been in this war longer."
But even so, everything had an end.
And tonight was the end of their long nightmare... and perhaps the start of something for everyone.
"Say, do you really think Nathalie is inside that aircraft?"
"She should be."
