Chapter 1832: Just a bump

THUD!

Zoren winced at the crushing weight on him, his back hitting the floor behind the counter. He grunted and clutched the person’s shoulder.

"You—"

"Hehe."

His brows rose, and he opened his eyes at the wicked yet playful giggle that caressed his ears in this gun-infested battleground. His vision was slightly blurry, taking its time to get a clearer look at the face hovering over his.

As soon as he got clarity on who had just jumped on him, his heart clenched. His eyes were wide, almost in disbelief at the person on top of him. The crushing weight was a tell, but somehow, he wanted to be sure.

Did he die just now? Was his mind starting to play tricks on him, of "what could’ve been?"

The corners of her mouth stretched from ear to ear until her teeth were on full display. "Found you."

SMOOCH!

Without a second warning, Penny planted a peck on his lips as if this were the time for some quality time. Then, another kiss on his nose, followed by one on his cheek, until she was just showering him with plenty—PLENTY—more kisses.

On the last one, she grinned and drew her head back.

She didn’t know this, considering she was grinning, beaming. But Zoren just felt his eyes sting, a lump forming in his throat.

"Penny," he breathed out in relief.

"Thought you dead." Her grin stretched, her eyes shining brighter than any explosion. "Got scared for a second."

A low chuckle escaped him; he wanted to tell her the same thing. That he thought she was dead and that he was scared, not just for a second.

"Renren..." she trailed off, only then catching the blood trickling down the side of his head. The smile on her face instantly disappeared. Slowly, it was replaced by a deep frown before she clenched her teeth.

"That mofo—"

Without a second hesitation, Penny jumped off her husband, just in time before she could crush him to death.

"Hey, what did you do— huh? He’s dead." Her face twisted, scrunching up her nose in disbelief.

At the same time, Zoren touched his ribs and winced. No, he hadn’t been shot. The pain came from Penny’s tackle, and her weight had simply pressed on him. Still, he reached out to the counter’s edge and pushed himself up.

When Zoren got back on his feet, he turned his head. Coming from the yard stood Angel and Mark; he believed they were with Penny, since that was where Penny had jumped from. Moving his gaze to the other entrance within the manor, his brows rose.

There, stood Charles and Slater. And the way Charles put down his rifle told him he was the one who shot the man in the corner.

All these people... they did come for him.

After a huff, Charles put down his gun and marched to where they were.

"Penny!" Charles shouted, his steps wide. Before she could react, he pulled her into his arms and hugged his daughter tightly.

His breathing shook, his body trembling. No matter how calm he was while fighting the enemies, the mere thought that his children were hurt sent a shiver down his spine.

"Dad," Penny smiled, patting his back. But when her eyes slid to the corner and caught Slater, she gasped.

She mouthed to her third brother: ’He found out?!’

Slater’s face grew bitter and sour as he nodded, mouthing back, ’You won’t believe how he did!’

"Yikes!" Penny grimaced, knowing that after this, oh boy. There was a final boss for the siblings: Charles.

After a second, Charles released his daughter and held her shoulders. He bobbed his head up and down, examining her closely. When he was sure that she wasn’t injured, he set his eyes on Zoren.

Zoren, unlike usual, was truly roughed up. There was blood on him, but what stood out the most was the bleeding on the side of his head.

"I’m fine," he said before Charles could even say anything, touching the side of his head. "I just hit it earlier."

"No, it’s not okay—let me check," Penny quickly stood before him, standing on her toes to check his wound up close. As she did, she suddenly covered her mouth, eyes teary.

"What is it, Penny?" Charles asked, and at this time, Mark and Angel also walked closer.

Mark, especially, carried a more worried look. Seeing Penny so emotional made their hearts pound.

"Actually, not all this blood was mine," Zoren remarked, pulling his wife close to rub her back in a one-arm hug. He eyed everyone. "Long story, but I’m really fine."

But none of them believed him as they all gazed at Penny. With her so emotionally and dramatically quiet in her husband’s embrace, Charles walked closer.

"Let me check," he said, and brushed Zoren’s hair carefully.

Zoren didn’t even twitch or jolt, which wasn’t a normal reaction for someone wounded. After a second, Charles frowned as he retrieved his hand. His eyes fell on his dramatic daughter.

"Penny, it’s just a bump," Charles deadpanned. "Why are you crying?"

"Because it means my darling got hurt," Penny whimpered, squeezing herself into Zoren’s arms. "My hubby, my poor baby hubby."

Mark heaved a sigh of relief. "Thank God."

Angel, on the other hand, kept his fist tight while Slater was grabbing his arm to stop him.

"Just what is wrong with her?" Angel hissed through gritted teeth. "Does she really plan to give everyone a heart attack?"

"She writes your paycheck," Slater, who surprisingly was the one stopping Angel from wrestling with Penny, clicked his tongue. "Let it go."

"Right." Zoren smacked his lips as he gazed at everyone, his eyes swirling with apology. "Nathalie got away."

No one answered because they were all aware. At least, that was what they had heard. Besides, Penny saw the chopper on her way here, although her people were shooting it down.

"But we might be able to catch up," Zoren huffed, eyes on everything. "If we hurry now to the rooftop, we have a very slim chance."

And by slim, he meant it was thinner than a thread. But better than nothing.

They looked at each other and nodded before marching back into the mansion to the rooftop. But by the time they reached it, their chances were not slim. They were non-existent.

"She..." Slater panted, his eyes on the chopper that was already far away from the mansion. "...got away."
