PAMPERED BY MY THREE BROTHERS: THE RETURN OF THE NEGLECTED HEIRESS -
Chapter 1789: Not another prison
Chapter 1789: Not another prison
"He’s gonna win not just the Shadow Order, but the Zorken Family as well. I’m putting my life in his hands, and even bet that he would change this order once he gets his hands on it."
A moment of silence fell in the hut as neither of them spoke after Penny’s remark. Slater and Shawn furrowed their brows, eyeing Penny, then shifting their gaze to the granny. Studying the granny, there wasn’t anything out of the ordinary about her.
The granny just looked like... well, she looked old, for sure. However, she didn’t carry any aura that could make one assume she was someone of high standing. She was rather simple — too simple.
Yet, this woman was the head of the Shadow Order?
The very organization that was deemed to be one of the strongest in terms of military power?
This granny?
How did Penny know?
The granny smiled at Penny in satisfaction, nodding at her.
"Atlas Bennet," she repeated. "I’ll remember his name, only because you, young lady, seem to believe in him so much."
"He is my eldest brother," Penny shrugged. "I believe in all my siblings, but the firstborn is just different. Though I have to warn you."
The granny raised her brows. "Warn me about?"
"My first brother has a bit of a different gear in his head," she explained. "He really has a knack for murdering someone without lifting a finger. Just his mouth is enough."
"Haha! You’ve surely not met a lot of people to think that is talent, young lady."
"That’s why I can’t claim the code," Penny humored, earning another round of laughter from the granny.
The granny nodded in satisfaction. "It’s been a while since I’ve talked to a young person who both annoys and entertains me."
"You surely need to meet my first brother, Granny," Penny answered, nodding at her as if she were just selling Atlas. "You’ll have a lot of fun with him."
’Or have tons of fun with more maintenance pills because she’ll need a lot of that,’ Slater spoke in his head, eyeing Penny and then the old grandma.
"This brother of yours..." the grandma hummed. "... is he on the island?"
"Maybe." Penny shrugged. "I haven’t seen them since I got abducted and faked my death, but I’m sure he’ll be here."
"You faked your death?"
Penny nodded. "Well, not really, but it may come off like that. Anyway, by doing that, no one’s after me!"
"Haha..." the granny shook her head, studying the young lady, who was both smart and silly. "Young lady, if you hand over the code right now, I will accept you as the heir of the Zorken Family and the new queen of the Shadow Order."
She hunched a bit, looking Penny in the eye. "If you accept it now, you’ll be able to stop the mess these people are creating on the island. Of course, your people would be left unharmed. Not even the tip of their hair would be touched as soon as you say the word."
"Not even that brat Nathalie and the wretched people she brought to this place would be able to stop it," she added sincerely. "All of that... in exchange for becoming their queen."
"Queen," Penny muttered. "Granny, that’s a bit... cringeworthy?"
The granny laughed while Penny just smiled.
"It’s alright, granny," Penny said, smacking her lips. "Tempting, but like I said, I put my bet on Atlas Bennet. And if there’s one thing I learned, it’s... I actually never lost a bet in my entire life! The heavens are always on my side — hehe."
"Are you sure, young lady?" the granny asked, and this time, Shawn couldn’t help but speak. "I am giving you another chance."
"Miss Penny," he breathed out. "This is... this is the chance."
Slater, on the other hand, bit his tongue. He didn’t say a word and just kept his gaze on his sister.
From all perspectives, Penny was being silly right now, and that was the truth. If Penny just said the word, the chaos in this place would cease. She would earn the power of the Shadow Order and put both Nathalie and Jonathan in their place.
Just one word: yes.
And all of this would be over.
However, Slater didn’t say anything because, even if Penny was being silly from every angle, he understood Penny’s perspective. Earning the power of the Shadow Order and saving everyone also comes at a price, and that would be her freedom.
Penny had been imprisoned in her previous life, and the last thing she wanted was another prison.
"Penny." Slater finally spoke, waiting for Penny and the granny to look in his direction. "No one’s going to blame you for being selfish for once."
She had already taken the fall for Atlas in their previous life and had lived miserably because of her brothers. And in this lifetime, she still opened her heart and had forgiven all of them. So, if Penny was being selfish, no one should and could blame her.
She had already given an entire lifetime to others. This time, she must live it for herself.
Shawn furrowed his brows and looked at Slater in disbelief. "Why are you..."
The corners of Penny’s lips hooked up until her eyes squinted a bit. The granny, on the other hand, just stared at Slater with slight surprise.
’I thought he would try to convince her,’ thought the old lady, because she wasn’t bluffing. She was serious about her offer, but then again, she smiled.
’Perhaps, I offered that because I knew... they would waste it,’ she thought in amusement.
Penny cleared her throat and faced the old lady. "Granny, I really appreciate the offer, but it’s not going to change my mind."
She paused and huffed heavily, pushing herself away from the small, rough table between them.
"Like I said, I love my life, and my life is not worth the Shadow Order," Penny continued, still carrying the same certainty she had previously. "Thank you for the offer, Granny, but no. I’m not taking anything."
"I hope you do not regret this, young lady."
"I won’t, Gran," Penny beamed. "I am living this life without regrets, and even if I die at this second, I will not regret any decision I made."
