Chapter 1765: a girl’s gotta stay out of prison
After hearing how these people operated, Penny was certain of one thing—Shawn was meant to die tonight, along with her. Their fates were already sealed if Shawn didn’t break down, and Penny didn’t have the chance to take control of the situation.
Shawn didn’t want to believe it at first. He wanted to doubt it. But deep down, he knew there was nothing to doubt.
Because what Penny said... was exactly what Jonathan would do.
It wasn’t like Shawn didn’t know that when he accepted the mission ten years ago. He already knew this would be his last mission. He just didn’t want to believe it.
Instead, he deluded himself and clung to the idea that he was needed. That he was helping his brothers and sisters. That he was helping the people he’d grown up with, and the very person who had saved them from that orphanage.
With that understanding, Penny told him to stick to the original plan: take her hostage and act like none of this ever happened, just in case someone was watching how it all played out.
Her words were: "Let’s talk about this later. Once we deal with them."
So Penny remained the hostage, and Shawn played the part of her captor. As they exited the office, Penny spotted someone approaching.
She didn’t think Shawn noticed, but if they ended up facing Teddy, Shawn would have to knock him out too. They had to assume they were being watched—and if Shawn didn’t act accordingly, they’d sabotage themselves.
Fortunately, Teddy managed to hide.
They continued with the plan—Shawn projecting control and Penny maintaining her quiet defiance.
That’s why, when Penny saw the man in the getaway car, she hissed at him one last time.
And Shawn—he just gave her a cold look... then injected her with the drug she had given him earlier.
Sure enough, it worked. It knocked her out. Though for a moment, he wondered if that too had been part of her act.
But after checking on her in the car, he knew it wasn’t. She was really out cold. He crawled into the back with her, making sure she’d wake up safe and in one piece.
Penny didn’t move — not even when they reached the helicopter.
But just as she instructed, Shawn tucked a pistol beneath the cloth she lay on. He did it because she asked him to... and because he wanted her to have something, just in case.
And just as she predicted, Brad put a gun to Shawn’s head.
He would’ve accepted it, to be honest.
But Penny moved.
For the first time since being knocked out, she shot Brad, saving Shawn once again.
---
[Present Time]
Shawn held his breath, wide-eyed, as he stared at Penny. She was barely upright, one arm braced against the surface, the other raised, still pointing the pistol at where Brad had stood moments ago.
"Miss... Penny," he whispered.
She blinked slowly and met his gaze.
Instead of responding, Penny stretched her neck from side to side, eyes closed. Then, without warning, she extended her arm and smacked Shawn on the head.
"Did you turn me into a punching bag while I was unconscious, you moron?" she muttered, rubbing her shoulder. "My body’s sore—no, aching!"
Shawn furrowed his brows, confused by the odd tone and disgusted look on her face. She looked the same... but something about her demeanor felt off.
Then he remembered her earlier words:
"I’ll wake up in time... but I might be a little different when I do."
His brows pulled together.
’Does she have two personalities?’ He wondered, surprised. ’Even after all this time studying her, I didn’t know that.’
"Tch." Penny clicked her tongue and rolled her shoulders. Still sore, she folded one arm behind her head and stretched from side to side.
"Ah—ahh..." she sighed, pleased. "Heard my spine crack. Feels good."
"..."
She suddenly turned her eyes to Shawn and tilted her head.
"Do you know how to fly a chopper?"
"Uh..." Shawn cleared his throat. "I’ve flown a few before. But it’s been a while."
"Good." She pointed toward the cockpit. "Deal with them."
He blinked at how casually she said it.
"Right," he nodded, but paused when he heard faint grunting behind him.
Shawn turned around, and Penny leaned her body to peek past him.
There, Brad was still alive, grunting through the pain.
"You’re still alive?" she asked, though she already knew the answer. She’d aimed to hurt him, not kill him. She missed his vitals on purpose.
"Ugh..." Brad glared at them, his voice hoarse. "Shawn... you traitor..."
Shawn’s hands curled into fists. There were so many things he wanted to say in response—but of all people, Brad was the last person qualified to talk about betrayal.
Brad had come here to kill him, just as Penny had predicted.
Ten years of loyalty... and they wanted to end it with a bullet.
How poetic.
Meanwhile, Penny’s lip twitched as she stared at the bleeding man.
"At this rate, he’s probably tasting his own blood. Might start going numb any second now," she muttered. Then she waved it off. "Whatever. Drag him over here—I’ll strap him myself."
Shawn turned to her just in time to see her put a finger to her lips.
"Shhh," she whispered. "The pilots might hear what’s going on."
"Ugh..." Brad tried turning toward the cockpit to shout for help.
They wouldn’t know who got shot unless they looked—and he was banking on that.
"Hel— Mhmp!" A large hand clamped over his mouth.
Shawn silenced him quickly and dragged his body across the floor as quietly as possible, keeping one eye on the cockpit.
The pilots, meanwhile, stayed focused on flying. They’d heard some grunts earlier but didn’t think much of it. As far as they were concerned, Brad had done the job, and Shawn was just putting up some resistance.
Little did they know, Shawn had already dragged Brad to the far corner of the chopper.
And Penny?
She simply covered Brad’s mouth and began tending to his wound.
After all, a girl’s gotta stay out of prison—even if this was technically self-defense.
Squatting beside Brad, her mouth stretched from ear to ear as she held a gauze on her right and a pair of scissors on the left. Just a first aid kit in the helicopter.
"It’s... torture time," she beamed.
