Chapter 619: Grand Lady Johnson’s Worries 5 Chapter 619: Grand Lady Johnson’s Worries 5 Grand Lady Johnson went on, “Later, I wanted to strike again, but I realized it was impossible. The old man had died, and so had the eldest son. Frank was still just a boy. Arnold was the only one left to support the Johnson family, and then there’s Chloe, who loved him with such infatuation.”

“I tried to persuade myself that as long as Arnold married Chloe and treated her well, granting the only wish of Chloe’s heart, then I could try to let go of my resentment towards Arnold, but to no avail…”

“It’s not that I can’t let go, but rather that Arnold is forcing my hand.” A ruthless glare flashed in Grand Lady Johnson’s eyes—it was menacingly sinister.

Alfred placed his hand on top of Grand Lady Johnson’s. The two pairs of aged hands held each other tight. Over the years, only Alfred remained by her side, knowing all of her secrets.

“Madam, under the current circumstances, in my opinion, we have to bend to Arnold. Today, when you showed a soft stance, didn’t Arnold compromise? We have endured for so many years, a few more years of play-acting won’t make a difference.” Alfred spoke calmly, but there was a sharp look in his eyes. “As for whether he and Victoria Garcia can end up together, that is still uncertain. If the first plan fails, we have a second. We may not be able to deal with Arnold, but surely we can handle Victoria Garcia.”

“Arnold treats Victoria like his most precious treasure, with her by his side 24/7. It’s nearly impossible to find an opportunity.” Grand Lady Johnson certainly considered taking action, but after two consecutive failures, Arnold’s precautions grew even stronger.

Alfred patted Grand Lady Johnson’s hand, “If we can’t kill her, then we should work on pulling her away from Arnold. Let’s take it bit by bit. As long as Miss Chloe wants to win him, we should help her. Miss Chloe has already waited for over 20 years, surely she wouldn’t mind waiting a few more years.”

“Therefore, I think, Madam, you can temporarily lower your guard and reconcile with Victoria, and temporarily make way for Arnold and her. Retreat to advance, and slowly plan.”

“I… I can’t bear to see Chloe like this. It breaks my heart to see her in this state now. She’s my only child left, my only surviving child in this world. I really don’t want to experience any more white-haired people bidding farewell to black-haired people—do you understand?” Every time Grand Lady Johnson thought about Chloe lying on her deathbed because of Arnold, she felt as if a knife was twisting in her heart.

“Madam, I understand, I understand!” Alfred gently comforted, “But the Arnold of today is no longer the young boy of the past. Hence, our approach towards him cannot be as forceful. We should ease these relationships, gradually heat the water like boiling a frog. When they least expect it, we strike—either at Victoria Garcia, or to facilitate his relationship with Miss Chloe.”

“Facilitate? Haven’t we done enough? We have tried so many methods to turn the tide of the situation, but none have worked.” Grand Lady Johnson couldn’t help but resent Arnold again when she thought of all this. “How can he be so clever to guard against us?”

“We can use Miss Chloe’s injury to ease the tension between you two, making Arnold feel as if you have had a change of heart.”

Alfred believed in a retreat to advance; a slow, steady approach was necessary. Of course, it was also possible that Arnold was completely impervious to any kind of persuasion or pressure.

However, she believed that an opportunity to strike would eventually present itself.
