Chapter 61: Arec’s Suspicious
Chapter 61: Arec’s Suspicious
Arec’s POV:
When Ella told me someone was trying to kill her, my mind instantly went to one person: my grandmother.
It had been days since I argued with her and insisted on marrying Ella, after the scandalous video surfaced. She hadn’t said a word about the issue since then.
Deadly silence from a woman like her was always a cause for concern. Usually, she’d be shouting at me, throwing around threats or ultimatums. But this time? Nothing. And that made me nervous.
Of course, Klaus, Ella’s ex, crossed my mind too. He had already tried to tarnish her reputation before, what would stop him from trying something worse?
People like Klaus wouldn’t mind getting their hands dirty. But something about the timing felt off. Klaus had been hiding himself since the scandalous video.
My grandmother, though, was another story. If she wanted something done, she’d make sure it was handled.
After Ella shared her fears, I couldn’t shake the suspicion gnawing at me. I needed answers.
The estate was dark when I arrived. The vast halls and ornate chandeliers felt cold and empty.
My grandmother had been avoiding me ever since our last argument, retreating into her study like some self-imposed exile. Honestly, I preferred her silent protest over her usual nagging. But tonight, I couldn’t let her hide away. I had to know if she was behind the attempts on Ella’s life.
I made my way down the corridor, my footsteps echoing off the polished marble floors. My chest tightened as I approached her study door. I paused for a moment, collecting my thoughts, before pushing it open.
She didn’t even acknowledge me when I entered. As usual, she was sitting at her desk, flipping through papers that probably didn’t even matter. Her way of showing me I wasn’t worth her attention.
"Grandmother," I said, my voice firmer than I expected, "I need to talk to you."
She didn’t look up. "If this is not about ending that ridiculous wedding plan with Ella, then we have nothing to discuss."
I clenched my jaw, "It’s not about ending the wedding, and it can never be" I said. "It’s about Ella’s assassination attempts."
Finally, she looked up. Her eyes, usually so cold and calculating, were filled with something I hadn’t seen before: hurt. Genuine hurt.
"Is that how you see me now, Arec?" she asked, her voice trembling ever so slightly. "Do I look like someone who would choose such methods? I hate that woman, yes. I don’t deny that. But wanting her dead? Why would I?"
Her words left me momentarily speechless. I had expected defiance, maybe even a proud confession. But the hurt expression on her face caught me off guard. For a moment, I felt like the boy I used to be, standing in front of the woman who raised me after my parents died.
"I’m sorry," I muttered, unsure of what else to say. I pulled the ultrasound picture from my pocket and placed it on her desk. "But even if I wanted to end things with Ella, which I don’t, I can’t. We’re having a baby, Grandmother. This is real."
She picked up the picture, staring at it with a mix of awe and disbelief. For as much as my grandmother despised Ella, she always wanted more grandchildren. After losing my parents in that car accident, I was all she had left. I was sure if my mother had lived, she would have given her more grandchildren to dote on, to carry on the family name.
Her fingers traced the outline of the ultrasound image. I could see the conflict in her eyes, the battle between her hatred for Ella and her desire for a family.
"I always wanted more grandchildren," she whispered, more to herself than to me. "Your father... he was my only son. And when I lost him, I thought..." She trailed off, her eyes lingering on the image. Finally, she looked up at me. "Fine. I’ll accept her."
Her words should have been a relief, but there was something unsettling in the way she said it. Like she was leaving something unsaid.
But I didn’t push. I had come here to get answers, and for now, this was enough.
As I left her study, my mind raced. If it wasn’t my grandmother behind the attacks, then who? I still couldn’t shake the feeling that Klaus could have something to do with iit
I pulled out my phone and dialed a number I hadn’t used in a while.
"Find Klaus," I ordered the person on the other end. "I don’t care where he’s hiding or how long it takes. Just find him."
I ended the call and shoved the phone back into my pocket, the weight of everything pressing down on me. The wedding, the baby, the danger lurking around Ella, it all felt like too much at times. But one thing was clear. Whoever was behind these attempts, I wasn’t going to let them hurt her.
As I drove back to my penthouse, my mind wandered back to Ella. I hadn’t told her about my suspicions, about Klaus or my grandmother. I didn’t want to worry her more than she already was. But something gnawed at me.
I thought about her face when she told me about the attempts. The fear in her voice, the way her eyes darted around as if someone might be watching. And then there was the way she looked at me when I insisted on security. Almost like she was questioning my motives.
Was she wondering if this was about her, or just the baby? I’d be lying if I said I didn’t care about the baby. But it wasn’t just that.
Somewhere along the line, this thing between us, had started to feel like more. More than just an arrangement. More than just a business deal. I can’t denied it anymore.
But is it possible to protect both her and the baby, without losing myself in the process? And if I did, would she ever believe that I was doing this for her, and not just because of the child we shared?
