Chapter 30: Liar!

"You..." Lin Fan’s voice cracked with disbelief as he ground his teeth, barely able to contain himself. His finger shot forward like a spear:

"Why do you lie?!"

Lin Fan’s eyes were wide, burning with outrage.

No official announcement had been made.

No ceremony, no Elder approval, no gathering, nothing!

Just this man—this outsider—claiming to be the new Saint as if it were nothing more than casual gossip.

It didn’t make sense.

It couldn’t make sense.

"You’re just messing with me, aren’t you?" Lin Fan spat, his breath quick and shallow:

"You think this is funny?"

Lin Fan took in a sharp breath to calm himself, but it did little to quell the storm brewing inside.

"..." Hei Long only offered a lazy shrug, utterly unfazed.

"I had a pleasant chat with the Sect Leader," he said, licking his lips absently, as though tasting a memory:

"She handed me the position quite nicely, actually."

There was a flicker of something in Hei Long’s eyes—mocking, smug, and just faintly reminiscent.

It sent Lin Fan’s blood boiling:

"You’re so full of shit!"

Lin Fan lunged forward, hand shooting out to grab Hei Long by the collar—

"Woah..."

But Hei Long simply stepped back with practiced ease, hands now tucked calmly behind his back.

"Calm down, little man," he drawled, his tone condescending and sharp:

"You’ll hear about it in the morning. Probably after breakfast, who knows. For now, go back to your little hut, or cave, or whatever hole you sleep in. I’m tired."

The casual dismissal hit Lin Fan harder than a slap.

His face twisted, fury rising to his throat, ready to explode—

However—

"Enough!"

Yue Yu stepped between them, her voice rising just enough to command attention.

Her face wore the sweet mask she had perfected, but her eyes flicked from one man to the other with a glint of desperation.

She plastered on a soft smile, then turned to Lin Fan and gave him a playful wink:

"Come on, Lin Fan. It’s late. There’s no point in fighting right now. You can calm down for me, right?"

For a moment, Lin Fan’s rage cracked like fragile glass.

His heart skipped, then thudded hard against his ribs as he looked into her eyes.

Her wink—so casual, so effortlessly disarming—left him dazed.

"Of course," Lin Fan said, voice softening instantly.

He cleared his throat and took a deliberate step back, pretending as if nothing had happened:

"I’m not some hothead."

"Could’ve fooled me," Hei Long muttered under his breath with a smirk.

Lin Fan ignored him, refusing to give the satisfaction of a response.

"Well," Hei Long said, already turning on his heel with a yawn:

"I’m going to bed. You two enjoy your awkward little moment or whatever this is."

Hei Long waved lazily over his shoulder as he walked away, his silhouette soon swallowed by the shadows of his new residence.

"Fucking bastard," Lin Fan hissed the moment Hei Long was out of earshot.

He spat to the ground, brushing off his robes with exaggerated annoyance.

Then, glancing sideways at Yue Yu, Lin Fan asked:

"So, uh... is your place around here?"

Yue Yu froze for the briefest moment—panic bubbling beneath her smile.

Her entire plan had collapsed.

She hadn’t expected Hei Long to live there.

Yue Yu knew she needed to think fast.

"Yep!" she said, too quickly.

Then pointed randomly:

"My home’s right... there!"

Lin Fan squinted in the direction she indicated:

"Over there? That’s just a bunch of caves and... is that a pond? I’m pretty sure that’s a pond."

Sweat nearly beaded on her forehead, but Yue Yu forced herself to nod enthusiastically:

"Yup! I, uh... I live in a cave. A secluded cave. Very quiet. Perfect for cultivation."

Lin Fan blinked. "Wait... what? You live in a cave?"

Yue Yu’s smile tightened like a string pulled taut:

"It’s very spacious. Lots of... airflow. Very modern. Cave-chic."

Lin Fan stared for a moment, completely baffled. "Do you have a... door?"

"Nope! Open concept!" Yue Yu blurted:

"Anyway, it’s getting late. Good night!"

And before Lin Fan could ask anything else, Yue Yu turned and briskly walked toward the direction of the caves—wholly confident she’d figure something out before actually reaching them.

"..."

Lin Fan stood there in silence, hand on his chin, thoroughly confused:

"...Cave-chic?"

An hour later—

’Why the hell is this bastard still standing there!?’

Yue Yu scowled behind the trunk of a thick old pine, arms crossed and back pressed tightly against the bark.

She peeked around the side for the fifth time in the last two minutes—

Only to find that Lin Fan was still standing there—scratching his chin and looking directly at the Saintess’s place.

"Seriously?!" Yue Yu mouthed in disbelief.

She ducked back quickly and hissed through clenched teeth, barely keeping herself from stomping her foot.

This was ridiculous.

All Yue Yu wanted to do was sneak back to Hei Long’s place—strut in, show off her and get a compliment, or even a reward for leading the fool on!

Instead, she was stuck playing woodland fugitive because Lin Fan decided to grow roots!

’Go home, you hopeless idiot!’ Yue Yu thought bitterly.

It was driving her insane.

Yue Yu peeked around the tree again.

Lin Fan was still there.

Yue Yu’s eye twitched:

’Are you trying to become one with the air or what!? Just LEAVE already!’

But Lin Fan, in all his clueless glory, simply remained where he was, now muttering something to himself.

"..." Yue Yu stared flatly at him.

"This man is going to make me commit a crime," she whispered to herself:

"A very petty and stupid crime."

With an exaggerated sigh, Yue Yu sank lower behind the tree, folding her arms again and glaring up at the moonlight filtering through the branches:

"Hei Long better have snacks ready when I get there. Or tea. Or something. I’m doing covert acrobatics for this."

Yue Yu didn’t know how much longer she could wait—but one thing was certain:

The next time she got the chance, she was going to "playfully" slap Lin Fan.

And maybe smile while doing it...
