Chapter 40: Alexander’s Pov: Rosie

Chapter 40: Alexander’s Pov: Rosie

Alexander paced back and forth in his office after he met with Maxim. "What am I thinking!? Asking Maxim to be my sugar baby is absurd!" he exclaimed, embarrassedly pulling his hair.

"But... maybe he will agree with it," Alexander muttered as he slumped on the sofa. He leaned back and remembered Maxim’s face throughout their previous conversation. "He’s so cute."

A smile formed on Alexander’s lips as he felt butterflies sparkling in his stomach. However, his time was disturbed by a knock.

"Your Highness," a voice spoke outside the door.

"Ugh! What do you want, Noa!" Alexander shouted, rubbing his temples as Noa’s voice returned him to reality.

"I came to bring some files," Noa replied, grunting.

Alexander rolled his eyes. He didn’t reply, but it was a sign for Noa to enter, which he did.

"I apologize for disturbing you, Your Highness. There are the files for the King’s duties... and your mother wants to see you," Noa whispered the last sentence, worried it would boil Alexander’s rage.

"My mother? Are you sure? Or maybe that b*tch call me?" Alexander asked with distaste laced in his voice.

Noa didn’t reply as he placed the files by the table. He lowered his head but took a single glance at Alexander’s face, admiring his beauty.

"Go," Alexander motioned his index finger toward the door, which Noa immediately scurried to leave.

Alexander placed an arm to his face, covering his eyes as he tried to relax. The happiness was destroyed the moment he was back in the Palace and felt the chains shackling him again.

Without much choice, Alexander fixed his suit before leaving the Palace and went to the mansion built nearby. He didn’t knock and went straight to his mother’s chamber.

Alexander was immediately greeted with the sounds of chains, which scratched his ears and made him want to leave. He endured it and stayed, walking closer to the bed.

"Mother..." Alexander whispered, looking at the woman before him.

"Alex? Alex? Is that you?" Alice, Alexander’s mother, whispered. She looked at the side and saw Alexander’s face. "WHO ARE YOU!? YOU’RE NOT ALEX!"

Alice started trashing around, wiggling her arms to scratch Alexander’s face, but the chains prevented her from harming him.

Alexander stood still, his expression unreadable as Alice screamed and thrashed on the bed, the chains binding her clinking with every frantic movement.

"You’re an impostor! A liar! My Alex would never look so cold and detached! He loved me— he would never let them put me here!" Alice’s voice cracked with rage and despair, the raw emotion lashing out like a whip.

Alexander let the torrent of words wash over him, unmoving, his hands clasped behind his back.

"You’re nothing like him! You’re a fraud, a monster! You dare to wear his face, to mock me with it!" Alice’s words cut like knives, but Alexander’s face remained stoic, a mask of indifference.

"I am Alexander," he said finally, his voice calm but hollow as if the words were merely an echo of themselves.

"Lies! Lies!" Alice spat, her eyes wild. "My Alex was kind. He cared about me. He wouldn’t stand there, cold and dead inside. You’re not him! Get out!"

Alexander’s jaw tightened imperceptibly, but his voice remained even. "Mother, you are not well. Rest."

"Don’t you dare call me that! You’re no son of mine!" Alice hissed, tears streaming down her face. "Get out of my sight! I don’t need you. I never needed you!"

Silence filled the room for a moment, broken only by Alice’s ragged breathing. Alexander’s expression softened just a fraction, a fleeting ghost of sorrow crossing his face. Then it was gone, replaced by the same unyielding mask.

Alexander turned and walked to the door, his footsteps steady and measured. As he reached for the handle, Alice’s voice cut through the air one last time, venomous and trembling.

"I curse the day I bore you! You’ve brought me nothing but pain!"

Alexander paused, his hand on the door, but he didn’t look back.

"Rest well, Mother," Alexander said quietly before stepping out of the room, closing the door behind him with a soft click.

In the dimly lit hallway, Alexander leaned against the wall, his chest rising and falling as he drew a shaky breath. His hands trembled slightly before he clenched them into fists, steadying himself.

"This is why I hate coming here," Alexander whispered, closing his eyes to calm himself.

However, someone decided to disturb Alexander again.

"Your Highness," a feminine voice broke the silence as she approached hesitantly, concern etched on her face.

"Leave me," Alexander said curtly, not sparing her a glance. He turned around and was about to leave, but a hand stopped him.

"I-I’m happy you came here... It’s been a while," she voiced sweetly, gripping Alexander’s shirt tightly as if she didn’t want him to leave.

"Ah, are you happy that my mother again doesn’t recognize me as his son, Rosie?" Alexander snapped. His voice was rough. He glared at Rosie as if he was going to eat her alive.

"That’s... That’s not what I meant!" Rosie exclaimed, tightening her hold, and looked at Alexander with puppy eyes.

"Unhold," Alexander commanded, his voice flat.

Rosie immediately obeyed. Her hands shook as she clasped them together. "I’m happy to see you again, Your Highness!" she blurted out her true feelings, hoping to get a bit of love from Alexander.

However, Alexander didn’t reply. He started walking away and wanted to leave the place he hated the most, but Rosie was not done.

"Your Highness! I’m sorry I used your mother. I just want to see your face again. It’s been six months since I last saw you. Please, stay for a while!" Rosie shouted in desperation. Tears streamed from her eyes as she wanted to spend so much time with Alexander.

Alexander continued walking, but he replied, "Rosie, you might be my future wife, but using mother as an excuse is out of the line..." He paused and glared back at Rosie. "Don’t do that again, or you want to be punished for disobedience."

Rosie was struck by Alexander’s words with fear. She slumped to the cold floor and watched Alexander vanish before her. "Yes... Your Highness," she whispered as she cried in the empty hallway.
