Chapter 33: Alexander’s Pov: Dark, Unlit Room

Alexander sighed deeply while pinching the bridge of his nose. "This is making my headache worse," he muttered, taking another deep breath. He settled himself before deciding to visit his ill father.

The guards watched as Alexander approached his father’s room. It was rare for him to visit the King, so the guards were delighted to see him.

"Your Highness," the guards greeted as they opened the enormous golden door to reveal a dark room with no candles lit for light.

Alexander ignored the guards as he stepped inside the King’s room and waited until the door was closed. His eyes adjusted to the darkness as he began moving at the center.

"Your Majesty," Alexander stated sternly as he stopped before King Donovan’s bed.

Donovan chuckled upon hearing his son’s voice. "Ah, you finally came to visit me, son."

Alexander’s eyes twitched upon hearing the word ’son.’ He disliked it but didn’t complain to avoid more talking between them.

"The physician has stated your condition has worsened," Alexander started. His voice remained flat, and he showed no compassion for his father.

"Haha! They’re liars! I am fine as the day I became King!" Donovan shouted, but it was followed by a terrible cough.

Alexander could only close his eyes to collect himself to prevent him from scolding his father. "I think you should stop doing it," he whispered.

"What the f^ck did you just say!?" Donovan gritted his teeth after hearing what Alexander stated. His blood pressure rose up as he despised being told what to do.

Alexander took a deep breath. "I said you should stop doing what you’re doing down in your basement," he stated sternly. He knew his father was doing secret dark magic that consumed his life force, which caused him to be sick.

Donovan sat up from his bed. "You ungrateful child! How dare you tell me to stop!" he yelled angrily since, for him, Alexander couldn’t understand the power of the magic he held.

"It’s not worth it if you’re dying!" Alexander shouted back. He was pissed at how Donovan was so stubborn. "The councils are against us and waiting for your downfall!"

"Hah! I don’t give a sh^t about them. All they want is money and status!" Donovan grumbled while shaking his head.

Alexander bit his lips. "But they give me so much trouble. I’m only a Crown Prince, yet I’m doing all your work while you’re stuck here in your room without gazing at the sunlight from outside!" he stated, walking closer. He wanted Donovan to understand the burden he had on his shoulders.

"Hahaha! You want to be King so bad, Alexander," Donovan chuckled as he pushed the blanket to the side, revealing his bone, skinny legs.

"I do not desire your Crown, Your Majesty. All I want is for you to do your own duty," Alexander stated calmly. His voice turned soft as he reminded his father about the weight of being a King.

Donovan stiffened. His gaze looked at his skinny hands, but he had no desire to leave his room for a while. "You will understand when the time comes, Alexander. For now, do what you think is best," he stated softly, standing up shakily.

"Your Majesty..." Alexander whispered in disbelief. He wanted to beg his father to snap out of his senses and be a real King who rules the Pack, but he couldn’t do anything. He watched as Donovan opened the secret door and went down to his basement.

"You’re leaving me alone... again," Alexander whispered as his knees gave up. He felt so defeated and helpless.

Alexander clenched his fists and stared at the secret door that had swallowed Donovan once again, wondering what his father’s real motive was. The weight of the moment pressed heavily on his chest.

"I need to get back to work," Alexander said unsteadily, his mind racing. He turned sharply and left the room, the golden door slamming shut behind him. The guards, startled by the sound, exchanged wary glances but dared not speak.

Alexander strode through the corridors, his thoughts simmering with frustration and resolve. Then his mind went back to Maxim; he wanted to see him again.

The next night, Alexander decided to visit The Velvet Rose club again to see Maxim, hoping it would ease his stress. However, when he got there with Dorian, Maxim was on vacation.

"What the heck!" Alexander cursed under his breath. He was pissed at Maxim deciding to take a vacation leave when things started to get good between them.

"Your Highness, do you want me to set a search party for his man?" Dorian suggested since he saw how Alexander wanted to meet Maxim again.

Alexander snapped at Dorian and thought about it for a second. "No," he finally said, his tone clipped. He turned away from Dorian, hiding the frustration flickering in his eyes. "That would be absurd. He’s just a worker in a club. I’m not about to turn the royal guards into a search party for him. It’s not worth it."

Dorian hesitated, then gave a slight bow. "As you wish, Your Highness."

Daniel had offered other workers to entertain Alexander, but he refused them all.

Alexander’s gaze lingered on the empty stage of The Velvet Rose, the warm light casting long shadows in the dimly lit room. The absence of Maxim felt oddly significant, though he couldn’t explain why.

"Let’s leave," Alexander muttered, striding toward the exit.

As they left the club, Dorian kept a respectful distance, sensing the Crown Prince’s foul mood. The carriage ride back to the Palace was silent, the city lights casting fleeting reflections through the window.

Alexander leaned back, his thoughts a chaotic whirl.

’’Where did you go? Did you hide from me?’’ Alexander murmured, and the thought of Maxim purposely hiding himself from him made his blood boil.

Back at the Palace, Alexander dismissed Dorian and retreated to his chambers. He poured himself a glass of wine, the dark liquid swirling in the goblet like his unresolved emotions.

Alexander sat by the window, staring at the night sky.

"Maxim, you can’t run away from me..." Alexander whispered softly, a smirk laced on his lips as he decided to play with Maxim as his new toy to distract himself from the royal responsibilities.
