Chapter 32: Alexander’s Pov: The Document
After what happened between Alexander and Maxim in the carriage, Alexander immediately returned to the secret passage and to his office in the Palace.
Inside, Dorion was already waiting for Alexander with papers in hand.
"You’re too fast, Dorion. You’re scaring me sometimes," Alexander stated playfully as he closed the hidden door behind him.
"I’m just doing my job, Your Highness," Dorion bowed as he went before Alexander’s table. He placed the files neatly and started explaining. "These are all the information we had gathered regarding the male dancer."
"That’s not a lot," Alexander commented, looking at the few pages of the document before him.
"There isn’t a lot of information regarding... Maxim, Your Highness," Dorion explained, and he was also surprised.
Alexander raised his brows and grabbed the document, flipping each page slowly so he wouldn’t miss a sentence. "I see. Thank you for your hard work. You may go now," he stated flatly.
Dorion bowed as he vanished in the shadows, leaving Alexander alone in the darkness of his office with only a tiny candle lit up on the side table.
"Maxim Elsher... an orphan, and his record only started when he was twelve years old," Alexander muttered to himself. He flipped a couple more pages, which showed Maxim’s room and the places he had worked for the past years, but they were all the same, and nothing was interesting.
Alexander leaned back in his chair, deep in thought. The flickering candle cast wavering shadows across the sparse details in the file. It was unusual— someone with such a hidden past: no family or connections before the age of twelve. "What are you doing, Maxim, before that?" he murmured.
The Crown prince tapped his fingers rhythmically on the armrest, his mind racing.
Maxim’s recent behavior had already piqued Alexander’s interest, but now this missing history felt like a larger puzzle piece.
For someone working two menial jobs, a public bookstore assistant and a dancer at The Velvet Rose Club, Maxim seemed too enigmatic, too composed.
"He’s hiding something," Alexander muttered to himself. "Or someone’s hiding it for him."
Rising from his chair, Alexander paced the room, unable to shake the feeling that there was more to Maxim’s story, but then he stopped.
Alexander stared at himself in the mirror in confusion. "Why am I thinking about this?" he asked, face-palming and shaking his head.
"Oh, Moon Goddess, why is my mate a man!?" Alexander exclaimed loudly while rubbing his face in frustration. He had many problems stacked in the corner, and Maxin’s appearance added to his headache.
Alexander stared at his window, where the moon shined brightly.
The moonlight filtered through the grand windows, casting a silver glow over the room. Alexander’s chest tightened as he gazed at the serene light, feeling the weight of his own restlessness.
"Why am I even wasting my time on this? It’s useless," Alexander muttered under his breath, running a hand through his hair. The frustration was mounting, not just with the situation but with himself.
After Maxim left the carriage earlier that night, Alexander noticed Maxim couldn’t feel their bond like how he felt it, and based on the document, Maxim was still seventeen years old.
"Hmm, if he reached eighteen and shifted to his full werewolf. I’m sure he will know I’m his mate. Haha!" Alexander giggled as excitement grew inside him. He touched his lips where Maxim and him had kissed. "I wonder how he would react."
However, Alexander’s smile vanished. "Why, out of all the potential mates. Why did the Moon Goddess choose someone like him? A commoner and have a d!ck!"
Alexander slammed his fist on the desk, rattling the papers Dorion had left behind. "I don’t need this right now," he growled, trying to regain control over his emotions.
"I am a Crown Prince! I deserve someone better!" Alexander growled and threw all the papers on his desk to vent his frustration.
But no matter how much Alexander tried to reason it away, the thought of Maxim lingered.
Alexander walked over to the window, opening it wide, allowing the cool night air to hit his face. His gaze swept over the quiet gardens below, the soft rustling of leaves in the breeze starkly contrasting the storm brewing inside him.
"Ah, this is driving me crazy," Alexander pinched the bridge of his nose as he tried to calm himself.
Suddenly, a knock echoed through the room.
"Enter," Alexander called out, his voice sharper than intended.
The door creaked open, and Noa appeared. His expression was unreadable, but his eyes showed a subtle hint of concern. "Your Highness, forgive the intrusion, but there’s... a situation that requires your immediate attention," he stated softly, lowering his head.
Alexander turned away from the window, his irritation momentarily suppressed. "What is it?" he asked, but he already knew what it was before Noa told him.
"Your Highness, it’s about the King..." Noa explained, gulping.
"Ugh! Him again?" Alexander snapped since he always disliked the topic of his father.
Noa stiffened at the sharpness in Alexander’s voice but held his ground. "Yes, Your Highness. The King’s condition has worsened. The royal physicians are concerned, and the council members are beginning to ask questions about the state of the kingdom’s leadership."
Alexander exhaled sharply, his frustration shifting into something colder, more restrained. "So, they’re circling already, are they?" his tone was bitter as he moved away from the window. "Of course they are. Like vultures waiting for the body to drop."
The Crown Prince’s relationship with his father had been strained for years. The King’s weakening health was no longer a secret, but what frustrated Alexander most was the political games that surrounded it.
Even with the kingdom on the line, the King remained a distant figure to Alexander, always critical and demanding.
"I’ll deal with it," Alexander finally said, his voice hard as steel. "Tell the physician I’ll be there in a few minutes."
Noa bowed deeply. "As you wish, Your Highness," he said before quietly exiting the room.
