Chapter 28: Alexander’s Pov: Run Away
Alexander flipped the book he was reading as an act to keep himself busy. He didn’t want to currently work in his duties in the Palace as it bore him to the core.
"Your Highness, you have been called for a meeting!" Noa, Alexander’s courtier, arrived at his office in haste.
"Tell them that I am very... swamped," Alexander replied, shooing Noa away as he wanted to rest all night.
"But Your Highness!" Noa exclaimed with fear in his eyes. He was already pressured by the court to force Alexander out.
"I can’t do anything about that, dear Noa," Alexander replied, winking at his close friend.
"You... you always put me in danger," Noa pointed at Alexander, which was already an offensive move to the royals and might get his head cut, but Alexander laughed it off.
"I know I can trust you. Now, wish you luck, Noa," Alexander grinned, waving Noa goodbye as he eyed the book again.
When Alexander was finally alone, he dropped the book and leaned back in his chair. He had been doing most of the royal chores in the Palace since his father, King Donovan Bloodworth, was rather busy with something he couldn’t understand. He had locked himself in his special room, which no one could enter.
"This is exhausting," Alexander muttered, sighing deeply as he was constantly bombarded with work. He thought when he turned thirty years old, the crown would be placed on his head as his father would step down, but that wasn’t the case.
Even though Alexander did the work of a King, he still held the title of Crown Prince.
"I need to unwind," Alexander murmured silently. His eyes glanced to the side, where a hidden door was behind the tall statue of a naked woman.
Alexander hesitated for a few seconds, but he decided to go. He fixed his table before removing his expensive royal robe and hanging it to the side.
"I should hurry," Alexander said, approaching the hidden door with anticipation. He wanted to leave before Noa arrived and scolded him.
It was a small, barely noticeable panel built into the wall, obscured by the imposing statue.
As Alexander pressed a concealed latch, the door slid open with a soft, almost inaudible click. The passage beyond was dimly lit, with stone steps leading downward.
"Ah, the smell of freedom," Alexander muttered as he descended. He felt the cool air hitting his skin. The responsibilities of the Palace melted away with each step, and he found himself craving anonymity more than ever.
At the same time, he had mind-linked some of his men to prepare his carriage and their usual outfits when they went outside.
It took a while before Alexander arrived at the exit point. The passage eventually opened to a quiet alley in a less conspicuous part of the city where no one was barely around.
In there, Alexander wasn’t a Crown Prince— he was just another man among the many.
"Your Majesty," a group of four men greeted Alexander as he arrived, and two carriages were behind them.
"Let’s get ready. I can only go out in a couple of hours," Alexander stated, informing his men about his schedule.
"Yes, Your Highness," the four men nodded as they went to the other carriage and Alexander to the next one.
Alexander quickly pulled a simple cloak over his acceptable attire, covering his royal garments. However, his look was still on the expensive side.
’Where do you want to go, Your Highness?’ Dorian, one of Alexander’s men, mind-linked him.
’Anywhere away from the Palace. Make sure I’ll enjoy it,’ Alexander replied before he cut the mind link. He just wanted to rest for a while without shouldering all the problems in the pack.
As the carriage rattled through the cobblestone streets, Alexander closed his eyes and took a deep breath.
Alexander could already feel the weight lifting off his shoulders, even though it was only temporary. He trusted Dorian and the others to take him somewhere far enough from the Palace, a place where no one would recognize the Crown Prince.
The carriage moved smoothly into a quieter part of the city. Alexander cracked open one eye and noticed that the quieter atmosphere had become narrow, bustling streets. It made him interested so far.
Eventually, the carriage stopped. Dorian knocked on the door and opened it slightly. "We’ve arrived, Your Highness," he whispered.
"That was faster than I thought," Alexander stated as he stepped out, pulling the hood of his cloak low over his face. His men stayed discreet, blending into the crowd as Alexander surveyed his surroundings. "Are you serious?"
Alexander shook his head when he realized they were in the red-light district.
"Yes, Your... ahem. A popular club here has been a major hit in the city. We can check it out," Dorian explained, extending his hand to the building before them. "And they treat guests well. Depends on how much money they have."
Alexander raised his eyebrow, becoming inquisitive in Dorian’s explanation. "Excellent choice," he muttered, tapping Dorian’s shoulder to praise him.
Alexander eyed the building with cautious curiosity. Its facade was modest, blending with the surroundings, but the soft glow of lights from within hinted at the lively atmosphere inside. He could hear the faint hum of music and laughter leaking out into the street, and for a moment, he wondered if this was indeed the escape he needed.
"What’s the name of this place?" Alexander asked as they approached.
Dorian smirked. "The Velvet Rose Club. It’s where the city’s... most interesting folk gather."
Alexander nodded, his interest piqued. Although he had never been there before, the club’s name was familiar.
As they stepped closer, the door swung open, revealing a well-dressed doorman who, with a glance at Alexander’s attire and the group, assumed they were another wealthy noble seeking anonymity. He gave a respectful nod and gestured for them to enter.
That was when Alexander felt his wolf becoming agitated and anxious.
