Chapter 51: Fired up

As she spoke, her computer screen began blinking with a line of three dots. Her expression shifted, her grin widening. "Oh?"

Vincent leaned closer, his curiosity piqued. "What’s up?"

"Well, well," she said, her voice laced with amusement. "Looks like the military is moving three shard users."

Vincent’s brows furrowed as he peered at the screen. "What do you mean?"

She pointed to the display, where clusters of red dots moved across a digital map. "See that big cluster? That’s the massive group of shard users stationed together. I guess they haven’t figured out how to conceal their identities properly. But these three here? They just left the group. One of them might be Elara Cross, but it’s hard to say for sure."

Vincent’s gaze lingered on the screen, his jaw tightening. "If it is her, things are about to get a lot more interesting."

"I also have some good news," she said, her tone almost casual as she tapped on her computer screen. "Off the coast of ( ), there’s a small island called Tuiyaki Resort. I’m picking up two pings for shard users there."

Vincent tensed at her words, his eyes narrowing slightly. "I’ll deal with them as well," he said firmly, before adding, "I had a question, though."

The woman smirked, leaning back in her chair. "First off, you need to wait for word from Silas before making a move. Last time, I had to build you a new arm." Her tone turned playful. "It was fun, sure, but still—don’t jump the gun. Now, what’s your question?"

Vincent crossed his arms, his expression serious. "Have you been able to make a suit like the one Elara uses? If she hadn’t had that thing, I would’ve taken her down. And that stupid flashbang—it threw off my senses completely. But I digress."

The woman shook her head, letting out a small sigh. "No, sadly not. The concept makes sense, but I just don’t understand the starting processes. Every time I’ve gotten my hands on a copy of the uniform, the failsafes activate, and the whole thing burns to ash." She clicked her tongue in frustration. "That’s one area they still have me beat."

"I see," Vincent said, his tone thoughtful. He leaned against the wall, his gaze drifting toward the monitor. "And how about the detection systems for the aliens? Any signs of them?"

She shook her head again, this time more grimly. "No, not since the last attack. Though I did collect a lot of the bodies from the battlefield. Pretty disgusting work, but necessary."

Vincent frowned slightly but gave a nod. "I see. Well, let me know if anything changes. If there’s even a hint of activity, I want to know about it."

She glanced at him, her curiosity piqued. "What’s got you so interested all of a sudden?"

Vincent ignored the question, standing straighter as he walked toward the door. "Regardless, I’ll be heading out soon. But I’ll take one of those eye scanners with me, so you can see what’s happening in real time."

She tilted her head, her smirk returning. "How thoughtful of you," she teased. "Try not to break it this time, yeah?"

Kikaru, Colby, and Paul sat on the cold, reinforced steel seats of a large, heavily armored vehicle.

The hum of its advanced propulsion system vibrated beneath them, finally coming to a stop with a low whir.

The hatch at the rear slid open with a mechanical hiss, revealing a tall, imposing man standing just outside.

At 6’6", he towered over most of the crew, his sharp gaze sweeping over the three shard users.

"Off the vehicle," he barked, his voice amplified slightly by the comm system integrated into his helmet.

The trio climbed down, their boots clanking against the ramp as it extended to the ground.

Behind the man stood three other soldiers, each clad in sleek, futuristic terrain uniforms equipped with tactical enhancements—glowing visors for HUD displays, exoskeletal support for increased mobility, and multi-utility gauntlets capable of both weapon deployment and environmental scanning.

Each soldier was flanked by a squad of six, all wearing similar high-tech gear.

Kikaru’s sharp eyes caught the shimmer of plasma rifles on their backs, their compact design hinting at lightweight but devastating firepower.

The tall man, identified by the name plate on his chest as Captain Jeice , took a step forward, his boots sinking slightly into the soil. "You three have been selected by the Chairwoman and the Wardens to tag along for the rescue of a high-value target. This Warden is crucial to ongoing operations. Your job is simple: stand by in case one of your ’kind’ shows up to fight."

He crossed his arms, his tone hardening. "You are to do nothing. Do I make myself clear?"

Paul, ever the diplomat, raised a hand and offered a casual smile. "Hey, I mean, we can all get along, right? We just want to help as best we can."

Captain Jiece didn’t flinch. His voice was colder now. "You three will help out greatly by staying out of the way. I know the higher-ups think you’re the future of combat, some kind of ultimate weapons, but I will not let my men and women become guinea pigs for their experiments. Is that clear?"

Kikaru glanced at Colby, whose mouth was pressed into a thin line, then back to Captain Jiece. The tension was thick, but she stepped forward, her gaze fixed on his name plate. "Captain Jiece," she began, her tone calm, "where exactly will we be on standby?"

Jiece; expression didn’t change as he answered. "You’ll be stationed with Platoon Juliet. Your job will be simple—ensure that no one damages or takes down the Arclight-class dropship. If it’s compromised, there’s no extraction."

He gestured behind him toward the squads. "Platoon Gunter is tasked with extracting Warden Dr. Anders. We have a direct beacon on his location, so they’ll get in and out quickly. Platoons Juliet and Romeo will act as support, holding the perimeter in case anything goes wrong. We have three bio-suit users in play, while the rest are equipped with standard exosuits for mobility and firepower."
