Chapter 105: Path’s unbinded

Elias exhaled. "Right. Makes sense. Still, I feel like I got run over after that obstacle course..."

Kikaru let out a short laugh. "I bet your heart sank the first time a sword went through you, thinking you’d just died."

Elias rubbed the back of his head, walking past her toward his pod. "Something like that. Managed to clear it in about twenty-eight minutes, though."

Kikaru’s laughter cut off. She blinked, then whistled. "Not bad for a first run. I’ve done it twelve times now, but I only broke fifteen minutes after my seventh try."

"Huh. Good to know," Elias muttered. "Well, I’m crashing for a few hours. I’ll catch up at dinner—Dot’s needs some study time anyway."

He waved her off, but Kikaru hesitated. She coughed lightly before speaking. "Uh... could you make dinner again? Doesn’t have to be my favorite or anything, just... your cooking’s better than the mush they give us."

Elias chuckled as his pod door opened. "I’ll think about it. Might be tough getting food allocated, but I’ll check with Geras when I can."

He stepped inside, the door sliding shut behind him. The moment he hit his bed, he flopped down hard, letting exhaustion take over.

Dot’s hovered over him, tilting her head. "Wow, you really look drained."

Elias gave a half-hearted nod. "Gonna get a few hours of sleep. In the meantime, try to get through some of that Energy Systems book."

Dot’s twirled in the air. "Got it. You rest, I’ll study."

As Elias let his eyes shut, the weight of the day finally sank into his bones.

Dot’s hovered over Elias as he drifted off, his breathing steady, exhaustion finally winning out. She let out a small sigh. Alright, time to get to work.

She floated down toward his book bag, which sat slumped against the corner of the pod. The bag was nearly twice her size, the fabric thick and heavy-looking. With a determined nod, she grabbed the edge of the zipper and pulled with all her strength—but it barely budged.

Dot’s frowned. Okay, new approach.

She flicked her tiny hands forward, summoning a set of thin metal rods—basic levers. She wedged them into the zipper’s edge and pushed. The added force did the trick, the bag’s opening widening just enough for her to squeeze inside.

The book lay at the bottom, massive compared to her. Its thick pages pressed together tightly, the weight of them almost daunting. She placed her hands on the spine and pushed, strained, shoved—nothing. The cover barely moved.

Ugh, seriously?!

Taking a breath, Dot’s summoned a tiny pulley system, anchoring one end to the book’s cover and the other to the lip of the bag. A few tugs later, the cover slowly lifted open, revealing the dense pages beneath.

She hovered over the first page, scanning the dense text. Energy Systems & Circuitry. The letters were small, even for her, but her sharp vision caught every detail. As she skimmed the introduction, she quickly realized—this was gonna take forever.

Dot’s sighed but didn’t stop. Instead, she summoned a small magnifying glass, adjusting it just enough to sharpen the words beneath her. There. Now, let’s figure out what all this energy nonsense is about.

Dot’s hovered over the book, her eyes scanning the dense text under the magnifying glass she had summoned.

"Electricity moves through conductive materials due to free-flowing electrons, creating a continuous loop of energy transfer."

She frowned. Okay, great. But what the hell do free-flowing electrons look like? And how do I know if something has them?

She summoned a thin copper wire, mimicking the book’s diagram. Focusing hard, she tried pushing a tiny pulse of energy through it—nothing happened.

Dot’s gritted her teeth. Come on, come on... what am I missing?

She turned the page using a small mechanical lever she’d built, then hovered over the next diagram.

It showed basic circuit components—capacitors, resistors, switches, and conductors.

"Capacitors store energy and release it in controlled bursts."

Dot’s narrowed her eyes. Wait... storing energy? I can work with that.

She summoned a tiny, hollow metal sphere and focused. Slowly, she willed energy into it. At first, the energy flickered inside, but when she tried to pull it back out—it dispersed like a dying spark.

She groaned. Okay, so it’s not just about holding energy—it’s about controlling when it releases.

She flipped back to the diagram of a capacitor. It had two separate plates with an insulating layer between them. Maybe that’s the trick.

Summoning another construct, she separated two metal layers with a thin, insulating barrier. This time, when she pushed energy inside, it lingered, humming faintly.

Dot’s eyes widened. It worked? It actually worked!

She tried releasing the energy—and a tiny burst of blue light flashed outward.

Dot’s squeaked in excitement. "YES! I did it!"

She pumped her tiny fists, but the celebration didn’t last long. The moment she moved her hands, the capacitor construct fizzled out of existence.

Her shoulders sagged. "Oh, come on..."

It had worked for a second. But she needed to figure out why it wasn’t stable.

She turned the page again. "Resistors control energy flow to prevent overload."

Dot’s yawned, rubbing her eyes. The letters were starting to blur together.

She shook her head. No, just a little longer. I’m onto something here.

She conjured another capacitor, this time adding a resistor before it. Again, she stored energy inside—and this time, when she released it, the energy pulsed out in a steady, controlled flow.

Dot’s grinned. This is it. This is the foundation of controlled energy storage.

She turned back to Elias, still fast asleep.

"You have no idea how much smarter I just got," she whispered smugly.

Finally, her exhaustion caught up with her. Her constructs flickered, the magnifying glass fell from her grip, and her body sank into the hammock she’d made between the book’s pages.

Her eyes fluttered shut. "I’ll figure out more later today..."

And just like that, she was out. Dot’s tiny form flickered, then phased back into Elias’s chest, settling deep within the shard. The energy around her pulsed faintly before dimming, adjusting to her presence as she sank into a quiet, undisturbed sleep.
