(For ’Love to Sleep without Getting Up’ brothers and sisters [4/5])

The little players were no strangers to rescue operations.

Though the area was teeming with ghouls and resentful spirits, and the odd skeleton warrior made a creepy appearance now and then, the assault squads composed of Black Iron Rank didn’t give them much consideration.

Bull Bull, Stick Brother, and Orchid, the three shield bearers, guarded the front, freeing up those in the rear to counter-attack. After completing the Black Iron Trial and advancing their profession, the psychics, who had previously been lackluster, finally began showing their potential. Lead Dove used his spiritual energy for mass slow-down, while the two psychics within Tiger Leopard Riders summoned Flame Walls and Psychic Lightning to burn their foes.

Burning oil was thrown out continuously and set alight, making it appear as if the players were walking through fire.

Even when elite corpse-eating ghosts showed up, archers took them out with increasingly dangerous bullets. The team’s combat style was gradually taking shape, and their coordinated attacks were executed smoothly and joyfully.

Of course, considering they were all part of the first cohort of high-ranking players - "T1" - their strength was expected.

However, the joy of mowing down monsters didn’t last long. When they arrived at the area housing the captured survivors, Good Dove let out a cry of surprise:

"Holy shit! This is just too grim!"

The other players remained silent.

Because the scene was indeed dark.

The concentration area was located on the edge of an underground river in a karst cave. Describing it as a building would be generous – it was more of a sprawling mass of shanty dwellings. The men and women within were glazed over, dressed in rags, and marked with lashing scars.

Their thoughts were seemingly dulled by some force as well, as no cheer came from them at the players’ arrival. They huddled together, shivering like prey hiding in a beast’s lair, looking fearfully at the fully armed warriors standing before them.

The place was packed, each shanty crammed full of people. Little Wei Ming flew around the area and reported back:

"There are roughly over 600, I can’t give a precise count. But there are a few folks hanging on poles at the back. They seem to be being punished. Should we save them too?"

"Save them!"

Sister Pomegranate sighed, saying:

"Well, that settles it, we’ll help everyone we possibly can."

"Ah."

Wei Ming pulled out his gun in mid-air, fired a few shots towards the back, and rescued the people who were hung on the poles. Their morbid cries and curses as they hit the ground caused the players to freeze momentarily.

These people are still conscious?

Sister Pomegranate quickly spread her wings, glided over, and grabbed a woman, who wasn’t particularly dirty but had disheveled hair and a "Gryphon" tattooed on her shoulder and arm.

Looking into her eyes, both weak yet clearly conscious, she asked:

"How many people are here exactly?"

"Who knows."

The woman they rescued replied with a disgruntled tone:

"They’re all here if they haven’t been killed by the Plague Rat King, maybe around 700? I have no idea, I’ve been tied up here for so many days, it feels like I’m nearly dead. Do you have any water? Or bread, let me have a bite!"

"Quiet!"

Sister Pomegranate, listening to the woman’s incessant chatter, realized she wasn’t likely to have led a lawful profession previously. She grew cold, and interrogated:

"Is there a second way out of here? We’re going to rescue you."

"Huh? Out? There’s no way out."

The woman looked back to see a few vampire chieftains prepared for an assault. Recognizing the identities of these vampires, she shrank back, understanding she had bitten off more than she could chew. Her tone became much less aggressive, she sighed and raised her hand weakly stating:

"The only way out is guarded by a few Combat Gargoyles under the command of the Rat King. My boys knew people were restoring order on the surface and wanted to escape, but guess what?

Hey, that evening, their corpses were thrown into the cavern to shift for the monsters."

"So, there is a way out, right?"

Sister Pomegranate pounced on this critical information.

She took out a few apples from the Spirit Bag and threw them to the woman. The woman thanked her profusely, took a few bites but didn’t finish it. Instead, she gave the rest to three other pitiable figures around her.

They immediately started eating, not even bothering to say thanks. It was obvious how starving they were, devouring even the apple cores.

"Who are you really?"

The sight made Sister Pomegranate suspicious of this woman’s identity. She posed the question.

The woman rubbed her stomach, and her dirty face broke out into a tragic smile. It might have been an attempt to express goodwill, but her aloof demeanor quickly fell, and she complained:

"Doris, people in the outer city call me ’Razor’. It’s their way of showing respect. I used to be the boss of Rat Gang, scraping by doing underground market trades in the sewer. Then that damn Rat King usurped my power.

He made me manage these wretches while only giving me a little food each day, clearly intending for me to kill these poor souls to feed his freaks.

Ah, I didn’t have the heart to do it, they’re all my neighbors after all."

"So that’s why you were hanging?"

Stick Brother nearby was also skeptical about the woman. He sensed she wasn’t being completely honest, but it wasn’t the time to discuss it. He said sternly:

"Lead us to the exit guarded by the Gargoyles - now!"
