"The geological layer here is extremely solid. I have dug all the way down and hit rock about half a meter deep. There’s no room for a stable passageway. Unless it’s right at the bottom of this water pit, but we can’t dive down and check."
"Let’s check the other end of the tunnel first."
The Dust Beater shook his head, made a wooden marker at their current spot, and led his teams towards the endpoint of the ancient sewer system.
However, after they left, a head suddenly emerged from the still water pit.
It looked similar to a ghoul but its skin was not so ruined, instead, it was pale and bloated.
This was a water ghost, a variant of the ghoul.
But this water ghost clearly was not right. It didn’t exhibit the chaos and madness of other water ghosts; silently, it crawled out of the pit and circled around the Dust Beater’s marker before ripping it out and tossing it into the water.
This series of actions indicated that the water ghost either still possessed intelligence or was a puppet controlled by an external force.
After destroying the marker, the water ghost limped back into the water pit.
But before it submerged completely, an arrow whizzed out from the darkness, accurately piercing its back. The force was so great that it was slammed into the ground on the opposite side of the water pit.
The water ghost tried to struggle.
But then, huge blood-red bat wings appeared out of darkness, and Civil Protection Officer Kudell, with his crimson greatsword, bolted forward. His combat boots, marked by signs of battle, stepped on the water ghost. Below his vulture-like helmet, his sharp eyes fastened on the water ghost.
"Finally caught you, rat!"
He rasped, "I can feel them! Those citizens are still alive. I can feel their fear and trepidation; you’ve captured them. Where have you hidden them, you piece of filth! Tell me! Are they underground?"
The accused water ghost struggled, but the controlling force soon began to withdraw from the puppet that was beyond saving.
Before leaving, the concealed malevolence taunted Kudell with a sneer, a sneer echoed through the distorted face of the water ghost, infusing the crimson swordsman with extreme rage.
The reasons he attacked ghouls in the depths of the sewer system alone were not due to idleness. When Murphy had come to meet him previously, he did not reveal his actions to Murphy.
After all, his mind, touched with madness, did not trust any vampire.
Yet, the Protection Officer did indeed feel that there were some lives in the deepest part of the sewer system that needed help. This wasn’t a vampire’s ability, but rather it stemmed from the abilities of his profession as a Holy Grail Knight. Just as Finoc had once pledged his faith to the Holy Grail of Avalon, Kudell, as a human knight, had a similar encounter.
Of course, it wasn’t Avalon’s Holy Grail.
There exist many artifacts similar to the Holy Grail on this mysterious continent; Kudell came across just one of them. However, this encounter granted him a mysterious ability to perceive the pleas of those in need of help.
This was why Kudell could gather so many survivors in the midst of the Blood Eagle Corridor after the Star-world Tear event.
He heard the pleas coming from underground, but he couldn’t respond to them.
He couldn’t find them!
He couldn’t locate those citizens who should have been under his protection but were now facing calamity.
"Squish"
The head of the water ghost was ruthlessly crushed.
Kudell turned around. He looked at the filthy, toxin-filled pit and, considering the deductions of Brickmover and the Dust Beater, decided without hesitation to dive into the putrid water pit.
He felt the uneven bottom of the pit and after a few minutes of searching, found a hidden crevice from which oddly coloured, foul-smelling bubbles emerged.
"Don’t you dare come down!"
As Kudell touched the concealed crevice under the water, a sharp and threatening voice from the spiritual plane reprimanded, "If you dare to descend, I will kill them all! What I am doing is none of your business, neither is the survival or destruction of this city. Get lost! You mad vampire with a mind warped by the Subspace."
Facing this weak and threatening adversary, despite the psychic attack, the Protection Officer, without any hesitation, drew his crimson greatsword, gathering power in water. He was about to break through to the deeper tunnel when a huge muffled sound accompanied by an earth-shaking tremor came from the end of the tunnel. This sudden and fierce disturbance seemed to have startled the despicable rat who had been attacking Kudell mentally.
The evil spell it wielded relaxed in an instant, while Kudell gritted his teeth, slammed his massive sword into the crevice, and surged into the shadows deep below with the swirling waters.
Meanwhile, back in the sewer tunnel, cries of astonishment from small players echoed around.
"Holy F*ck! There really is an underground tunnel! There’s a huge void beneath us! How goddamn big is it! The old professor must be lauded!"
"Heh Heh, clearly Old Chen’s expertise isn’t just hot air! I’m impressed."
"Look! There’s a monster’s nest ahead! Damn, there must be thousands of ghouls! And many resentful spirits...wait, I think I see people! There are people down there!"
"Shit! Forget about the people, run! The ghouls are rushing up!"
"Looks like we blasted free something huge! We’re in deep shit! We must inform Sir Morphy!"
