Chapter 545: 188. Cape Holiday · Human Sentiments & Worldly Wisdom_1
Major Fraser completed the handover of responsibilities to the incoming intelligence officer at Pioneer Fortress. He then picked up his suitcase, which had been packed a few days earlier, a relaxed look on his face as he left his quarters.
From today on, he was finally beginning his first vacation after the end of the war.
Though his promised three-month vacation had been shortened to two, Major Fraser held no resentment. In the context of the impending Black Disaster, fulfilling one’s duties was an honor. Furthermore, as the king’s ear and heir to the Cape Family, he bore the responsibility to achieve something beyond his noble origin.
However, even a righteous soul like Major Fraser could not deny that his surname had considerably contributed to his smooth military career.
The Cape family had been a prominent lineage in West Lan Kingdom even during the time of Anru region.
Thanks to Fraser’s grandfather who bet correctly during his midlife crisis, which handed them the power to swing weight among the king’s party. They built factories within the country when West Lan Kingdom started its reformation. Moreover, his father’s alliance with King Louis monopolized the supply of logistic materials for the guards for some time.
After the establishment of the Golden Flower Kingdom, King Louis generously rewarded the already powerful Cape Family with a status akin to "the pillar of the nation."
Inherited wealth, progressive education, and a steady flow of money, Major Fraser was born into such a prosperous family background.
Create a bitter irony, though; he was the only boy in his generation, whether in the main line or crucial branches of the Cape Family. As such, he was designated as the family heir without question from infancy.
The pressure of such rich and noble life had Fraser gasping for breath.
This was not him being paradoxically.
If you familiarize yourself with Major Fraser’s schedule at the age of eight, you would understand that his pressure was literal.
Being of such lineage offered him no freedom of choice. No member of the Cape Family would allow a weakling to take over the family line. They aimed for further successes, discontented even with a decent defense strategist.
From the moment of his birth, it was expected that Major Fraser would outshine his peers.
Excellent?
That was a duty he needed to fulfill, unworthy of admiration or praise, as the heir of the Cape family.
Under such circumstances, there were only two periods in Major Fraser’s life till his thirties that he felt free. The first was when he got admitted to the Shaldo University of Craftsman at the age of seventeen and the subsequent two years of schooling.
The other time was his military service right after his student career.
While others kept complaining about General Loren’s strict military discipline, only Major Fraser was enjoying a "relaxed and free" life. However, some things he needs to deal with.
The major’s homecoming journey was quite different from the other officers accompanying him. Instead of riding the coach to the steam train station under construction and heading to East Prussia, or returning home in a group of riders, he only needed to walk out of the barracks to the transmission station at the Pioneer Fortress with his luggage.
It was less than 2500 steps away. Three senior psychics specially appointed by the family to take care of the transportation services were waiting there for him.
They would teleport Major Fraser directly to the family’s headquarters using a relatively safe large-scale teleportation spell and sending him directly near the family mansion. That his father wanted to see him as soon as possible was proven by the grandeur of the deployment.
Maybe there were some important matters that he wanted Fraser to handle.
This was a pressure that even the usually unflappable Major, who withstood facing vampires, felt.
To him, dealing with his father and elders was much harder than handling Marshal Loren. This was quite normal; politicians were typically tricker to handle than Military personnel.
"Young master, we shall begin the teleportation immediately if you’re ready. You need not worry about the teleportation going awry. Besides me, there are three experienced teleportation spell practitioners keeping the ritual in check at the family mansion. If anything goes wrong, they can instantly transport you back from the Star Realm.
Of course, you should still wear this evil-protection charm. It will ensure your absolute safety,"
A plump and well-dressed female psychic wearing the cape family ceremonial robe handed a shiny charm over to the Major. Judging by the charm’s appearance, it was an incredibly powerful symbol. She whispered to Major Fraser.
Major Fraser accepted the charm and wore it, nodding to the dazzling lady with a smile.
He knew that this lady was one of his father’s mistresses and was his most trusted subordinate. A brilliant graduate from the control school at the Circle Tower, she could have entered the national psychic organization but was heavily recruited by his father.
To put it bluntly, both her body and soul belonged to his father, bought with a hefty price tag, but there was no shame in it for her.
She was indeed very expensive!
She took pride in it.
"I am ready to depart at any time, Lady Lena,"
Major Fraser replied softly.
But just as the three psychics were preparing the spell, the Major’s Treasure Bead suddenly vibrated. Shocked, Fraser lowered his head and, on seeing the unique psychic symbol, his expression slightly changed.
"Hold on, I have an important message to reply to."
