Chapter 531: 183. Yes! Marshal! _2
However, on this continent, it is not easy to become a new emperor. To birth a new emperor, one must gain the approval of the two ancient empires.
Of course, there is no ghastly "emperor audit." Any leader with enough audacity can dub themselves an "emperor," but an empire that doesn’t receive approval from a power of equal standing is doomed to merely entertain itself behind closed doors.
The Song Sea Empire of the Origin Land and the Kalem Ancient Country located in the East, both control terrifying expanses of territory, possess unfathomable populations, and are superpowers that have existed for over 700 years.
When the people of West Lan, the Kite People, and the Nord were still engaging in tribal "village clashes" on this continent, these two ancient nations had already existed.
Winning the joint approval of the Pharaoh King and the Dragon Emperor is not an easy task, even for the current King of the Golden Flower.
"What a nice piece of romantic documentation. But I bet the report submitted first by the young folks of the Cape Family wasn’t like this. Men from that family are so serious that they are rather intimidating, just like my political advisor Count Leon," the King laughed as he put down a third of the report on the table, thoughtfully inserting a golden leaf bookmark.
He regarded the report like a foodie savoring a delicacy, not wanting to gobble it all in one go and instead reserving it for later enjoyment.
The king picked up his teacup and leaned back on his chair in a relaxed posture, gazing at his favorite garden under the warm afternoon sun, as well as the royal maids in black and white uniforms walking within it.
This was his favorite place, one of the few where he could remove his mask of royal sternness and enjoy life out as just himself.
The sunlight illuminated King Louis’s face, adding a soft glow to his solemn and elegant features. His well-maintained beard was a work of art, a testament to his passage of time, adding a touch of magnitude to his otherwise somewhat gentle face.
Looking closely, though, General Loren noted that the king still retained traces of that playful young man he’d once been.
"Your gaze has not left me, Lord Frederick."
King Louis set down his tea cup in annoyance, feigning anger as he stared at his most trusted general and said:
"So, has my staunch General noticed any dirt on my face?"
"Uh, no, your majesty."
The half-dwarf slightly bowed and replied seriously. But he quickly followed up in a peculiar voice, whispering :
"But there’s some lipstick on your neck that you haven’t wiped off..."
"What?"
King Louis was immediately embarrassed and hastily pulled out the "royal handkerchief" to wipe his neck.
The General wasn’t bluffing; there was indeed some residual lipstick there.
But it wasn’t from any of his "beloved" whom he had long since stopped contacting and had let fade into the tides of time.
"Before I summoned you, I was having lunch with Margaret and Elizabeth. You know, ladies can be enthusiastic regardless of the occasion," the king explained, and the general just smiled without responding.
Lady Margaret, the most beautiful flower that could bloom amongst the people of West Lan.
Even before he ascended the throne at the age of nineteen, he had been passionately pursuing her, and after his ascension, he cut off contact with all his lovers to maintain the dignity of the king. Only Lady Margaret stayed by his side, even giving birth to a healthy daughter for the king seven years ago.
This is a secret known to all in the upper echelons of the Golden Flower Kingdom, but no one expressed dissatisfaction. Even the most traditional and conservative nobles dared not wag their tongues about this.
Everyone knew clearly that if it weren’t for political needs, Lady Margaret, of noble birth, should have been the only and perfect queen for King Louis.
But the most outrageous of all the outrageous stories about Louis IX is that even though his marriage to Queen Elizabeth was politically arranged, their relationship is as harmonious as a real married couple’s.
Five years ago, the queen gave birth to a healthy boy for the king, who was then established as the heir. The daughter of Lady Margaret was also conferred the title of princess.
Neither the queen nor Lady Margaret expressed any grievances about this.
This can only mean that when it comes to relationships, the king’s abilities are truly as exceptional as his talent for wielding power.
"Ah, you’re wearing that cunning dwarf-like smile again, Loren," It’s quite vexing!"
King Louis stopped addressing the general formally by his full title and used a more intimate one instead. Sipping his tea, he announced:
"Given your character, you didn’t visit me solely to deliver this interesting travel account. What else do you deem important enough for me to know? Spit it out."
"You might want to finish your tea first, your Majesty," General Loren produced a second document, whispering,
"I wager you won’t feel like drinking tea after you read this."
"Then, wait for a moment. I don’t want any sudden, unwelcome bad news ruining my good mood today."
King Louis nodded, then spent about ten minutes chatting with General Loren about interesting battlefield stories while sipping his tea and consuming several rose cookies.
Only after his leisurely afternoon tea time came to an end, did he wipe his hands and take the second document.
The document was brief, only a few pages long.
