"What are you doing?"
Ambo asked, as Bull Bull strapped the meticulously crafted veteran’s one-handed hammer to his waist and readjusted the heavy shield on his back. He grinned cheekily and replied:
"I’m rallying people."
"Rallying people? What do you mean?"
Ambo, mounting his horse and draping his scout cloak on his back, asked curiously:
"Is that some lingo from your hometown?"
"Yes, it means to get people to help."
Bull Bull also got on his mount, an army horse gifted to him for escorting Major Fraser back to the Pioneer Fortress. Although it wasn’t as good as the demon hunting mounts tamed by witch hunters through secret methods, it was docile and loyal, making it a pretty decent vehicle for adventurers.
"Your companions probably won’t suffice."
Ambo adjusted that pirate-like eyepatch of his, and said:
"I admit they are fearless in battle, but when it comes to the psychic hunters of the Circle Tower, courage alone won’t get you far. Better not let them join in for a pointless sacrifice, don’t you think?"
"You’re returning to Transylvania and will become citizens under Sir Morphy. Protecting you as warriors of Sir Morphy is our duty. Do you understand duty? Do you understand an oath? We will take action regardless of whether you need it or not."
Bull Bull grunted and spouted another fine sounding phrase, causing Ambo to shoot him a glance. Then, the small and nimble scout gestured and said:
"Keep close to me! We’re the vanguard of the battle group and we’ll need to depart first for scouting along the way. This is a dangerous job. If the scoundrels from the Circle Tower have set up an ambush, we might not be able to make it back."
At this point, Ambo lowered his voice and said:
"But you’re a foreigner, you’re not afraid of these. So if I die in this battle, could you send my ashes back to the hunter’s cabin no.16 near the Evergreen Forest in the Antani District? I grew up there and I wish for my soul to return to my homeland."
"Can’t you say something positive for once? You won’t die, believe me! We won’t let formidable NPCs like you all die."
Bull Bull was getting impatient with all of this.
Even though Ambo was just an NPC, it was clear that Bull Bull had started to see him as a friend.
He was going to try and persuade Ambo otherwise, but seeing all the other witch hunter scouts with their undisguised death defiance, he remained silent. He quietly noted that information, thinking to himself: if Ambo’s hometown is in the distant Antani District, maybe future tasks could originate from him?
A few seconds later, several scouts led a young, tightly-bound psychic over, who wore a scared expression in his black military uniform. As soon as he saw Ambo, his eyes lit up and he shouted:
"Ambo! Auntie! What on earth is going on?"
"Shut up, He Lu."
Ambo stared back at his fellow townsman.
Over the past period, the information that she had collected about the Circle Tower and the Exploration Corps came from this unlucky fellow.
As for the "Auntie" nickname... well, who among the rural children doesn’t have an oddly ranking relative who is younger but of higher status than them?
In any case, the unlucky He Lu was the one assigned to guard the Calculating Pearl today. With the witch hunters "plundering" the place, he as the manager was bound to be in trouble.
So Ambo said to him:
"Now you have two choices, the first is that we knock you out and stab you at a fatal spot, this way you’ll only get reprimanded and not in danger. The second is to come with us, to Transylvania.
I know that that ghostly place doesn’t have much at the moment, but its Lord is desperate for all sorts of talents. You, with neither exceptional nor inferior skills, may just be able to make a name for yourself there."
"Then I’ll go with you."
The heavily beaten He Lu looked around and made up his mind quickly.
The usually indecisive man acted so resolutely that Ambo blinked in surprise. Curiously, she asked:
"Weren’t you always telling me how your dream is to earn a middle level title in the Circle Tower and retire in peace?"
"Er, my mentor died of an illness a week ago."
He Lu embarrassingly whispered:
"He was my only support in the Circle Tower. Without him, it’s virtually impossible for someone of my talent to climb up the ranks. The internal competition in the Circle Tower is brutal, and I don’t have the confidence so I might as well follow you.
I don’t know what you guys are up to...
But since Major Fraser is willingly helping you, it seems that the prospects should be bright. If things don’t work out after escorting you to Transylvania, fleeing to the Anru district to seek refuge in the Cape family is a way forward."
"Alright, then you go find Old Norman, he’ll arrange for a follower’s spot for you, and make sure you don’t wander off, understand?"
Ambo gave a few instructions before signaling her subordinates to take away her nephew, who was two years older than herself. Along with Bull Bull and fifty other elite scouts, she was ready to leave the Pioneer Fortress.
Natalie, equipped with the Great Oak Holy Blade, came to bid farewell. The grey-haired demon-hunting princess grabbed Ambo’s hand, her tone curt but deep:
"Don’t you dare die, heard me? After this life-risking mission, both Old Norman and Porter plan to retire, so once we get to Transylvania, I’ll still need you as my deputy."
"Piece of cake, we’ve crawled out of hell more than once."
