Chapter 401: 139. The name of Cardman City is too unlucky! I want to call it..._3
He was still somewhat unaccustomed to Murphy’s approach, which was starkly different from other feudal lords, an approach that involved such a thorough and pragmatic outline of territorial development. Nonetheless, he believed it was necessary to remind this young vampire lord.
"Oh, First Officer, please feel free to speak your mind."
Murphy gave a smiling ’please’ gesture and said:
"I am in desperate need of your wisdom! Believe me, I urgently need your advice; the Count’s territory is not just my domain, it’s also your homeland. Its improvement will benefit us all."
"If you’re planning to lease out the mines, dwarf miners may not be a good idea."
Professor Malcolm solemnly declared:
"The distance between Brass Castle and Transylvania would be a fatal factor. As far as I know, the mines in the Dark Baron’s territory are obviously closer to Klim Fortress. Given that the territory is now occupied by the Nordtoff Kingdom, the occupying forces there will surely need more minerals to build new borders."
"This need exists, and we should never underestimate the Nordtoff barbarians’ persistence for their territory."
"Therefore, if we can establish trade relations and lease the mines to them, the returns can be considerably higher."
"They’ve already occupied the fertile Kavkhoka plains."
"The plains used to be one of the most important grain producing areas in the Posya Confederation and even in the whole human civilization territory. This means the northerners now have a very large food supply."
"With an excess of food, its value will decrease, making it a good time to buy!"
"Professor, there’s a problem."
Miss Milian frowned and said:
"We currently don’t have any trade relations with the Nordtoff Kingdom and to be blunt..."
She sneakily glanced at Murphy’s face and said softly:
"It’s still unclear whether Wolf Queen Majesty would recognize the authority of the Earl of Cardman and moreover, the military discipline of the northerners’ border defense army is a major hereditary issue. They might prefer to seize rather than trade, and we currently lack the strength to protect our properties."
"Er, My Lord Count, Governor lady, and First Officer..."
Ms. Pailian, a middle-aged lady with a large build who was just appointed as the city warehouse manager, is apparently attending this high-level meeting for the first time.
She’s still getting accustomed to her previous small businesswoman lifestyle.
She rose to express respect with poor etiquette, but Murphy waved his hand to stop her. Speaking in a gentle tone, he said:
"Miss Pailian, no need for such formality, We are discussing the future of our territory, and under such circumstances, insisting on etiquette may be inappropriate. Please just express your thoughts."
"Oh, well then."
Seeing the Lord was so gentle, Ms. Pailian breathed a sigh of relief.
She collected her thoughts and said:
"When I was doing business in the small border town Bata Sin in Transylvania, I met some northerners. They bragged about acting as business agents for some NCOs in the Northerner’s border defense army, we might be able to establish relations through these smugglers."
"Also, if the Northerners want to sell us food, they will certainly go through these merchants."
"Maybe it would be better to make direct contact with them."
"Excellent, Miss Pailian, this is exactly the kind of advice I need."
Murphy nodded satisfactorily, he gave Miss. Milian a sign, and the intelligent governor immediately agreed:
"Then, Knight Pailian, I hereby officially appoint you as the representative with full authority to carry out business transactions with the Northerners. The appointment document will be sent to you afterwards."
"I also have a suggestion! My Lords."
Seeing the cunning Pailian use her connections to gain the right to participate in trade, the rest of the "nouveau riche" couldn’t sit still.
The city guard commander, Mr. Philo Portman, immediately stood up, saying:
"I have a distant cousin who has been purchasing local products from the Western Sacha Barbarian tribes in Ice Bay, I can write to him, as long as we pay enough money, those barbarians are willing to provide us with large amounts of pickled meat and dried fish."
I admit, the taste of frozen fish, stiff with cold, is not ideal, but considering our current predicament, we can’t afford to be picky!
After all, just three frozen fish along with some local vegetables and plenty of breadcrumbs can be used to cook a pot of thick soup capable of feeding ten laborers! Most importantly, buying from barbarian tribes costs very little.
Even lower than your imagination!
The people of Beilao and West Lan look down on them, so the abundant fish and products of the Ice Bay area always lack long-term customers.
This is an opportunity!
Lords and Governors!"
"Very well! Knight Portman, I hereby appoint your distant cousin as the authorized representative of the trade in the Count’s territory of Ice Bay Area. What is his name..."
"And me, Madam Governor!"
The cook, Franks Shawn, was a little anxious.
Seeing the benefits about to be taken, this burly man with tattoos on his arms and a bit of a social style stood up and shouted:
"My brother-in-law once worked for the city gang, smuggling weapons and explosives from the border army of the Golden Flower Kingdom..."
As soon as the words were out of his mouth, he realized something was off.
But it was too late to hold his tongue, as everyone else was giving him a "you’re in deep shit now" look.
Shawn also realized he had misspoken.
Arms smuggling is a grave offense that any sensible lord would punish severely, let alone his brother-in-law smuggling from what is presently an "enemy kingdom" of Golden Flower Kingdom.
He slumped back into his seat, dejected.
He thought his whole family might be sentenced to death by the Earl, but Murphy just laughed. He nodded and said:
"Excellent, I need someone like your brother-in-law and his connections, right now. Find him, Knight Shawn, I’m only giving him fifteen days. I want to see at least three thousand matchlocks for soldiers and enough ammunition.
I can deal directly with gold, but don’t try to fool me with inferior products. If he does a good job, I’ll pardon his previous crimes and even give him an official position and possibly a knighthood.
But if he does not do well..."
"I guarantee it with the lives of my family, my lord!"
Having escaped death, Knight Shawn immediately stood up, slamming his fist into his chest. This chef with a touch of gangsterism loudly proclaimed:
"We’ll need thirty days, but I guarantee we can secure the weapons you need! We can even discuss armor and artillery. After the war, the people of West Lan surely have a surplus of weapons they need to dispose of.
They are still undergoing military reform, so the old weapons will be destroyed even if they don’t sell them to us.
Therefore, we might be able to acquire acceptable ... at a third or even a fifth of the usual price."
When such professional words were spoken, the looks on everyone’s faces became more subtle.
You’re a decent cook!
Turns out you have such a shady and questionable sideline.
You’re actually knowledgeable about this kind of thing, so does this mean your brother-in-law is just a mule, and the real mastermind behind the underground arms smuggling is you?
"Very well, go get it done."
Murphy didn’t care about these things.
He needs to utilize all available resources right now.
He is well aware that these survivors who have in time shown their capabilities are each not to be trifled with, but that’s okay. If they want to start over and opt for a more noble origin, Murphy can satisfy them.
As long as they can bring benefits that result in a win-win situation, all these are negotiable!
