"Back to the company.
I don’t know where you conjured up this bunch of legends from, but let’s be clear, there are no more than fifteen who can do real work. You truly have a knack for dredging up trash; all the old-timers from the industry have ended up at your beck and call.
One would think you were working on a startup if not for the notion that you might actually be cleaning up the market.
I know you’ve been thinking that by paying them high salaries and providing good benefits, they would work their hearts out for you - but clearly, you haven’t seen the darker side of society yet.
I’m not lecturing you.
However, as I stated in the report and resignation letter I handed in yesterday, the outcomes of our marketing department, after a week of hard work, are even less fruitful than what you could have achieved by outsourcing to a three-person studio.
At least you’re capable of taking advice. There’s still hope for you.
Working at this pitiful company of yours is pointless. It’s nothing but a money pit, swallowing up all your pocket change just to fatten up the rats. Do you want to know what nickname the old-timers have given you?"
"No...don’t tell me. I don’t want to know."
Even the interest in his health tea seemed to have vanished at this point.
He believed all the words spoken by Sister Pomegranate.
Not only because Sister Pomegranate’s report yesterday had laid out the harsh truth, but more importantly, he couldn’t explain why he had invested so much money and waited patiently for three months, yet still hadn’t seen any results, apart from perhaps the whole company being a scam.
The most important factor was - he trusted Sister Pomegranate’s character!
Even Pomegranate herself might have forgotten that, before she came to work for him, she had assisted an old man in deterring a thief at a high-speed railway station, a scene which he had witnessed by sheer chance.
Though he, as the boss, might not be adept at business, he sure hadn’t picked his assistant secretary randomly.
"Why didn’t you tell me all this earlier?"
Although the boss had already shut down the company, he was still upset, feeling let down by Sister Pomegranate.
However, Sister Pomegranate quickly rebutted him.
"Are you an idiot?"
She rolled her eyes and said:
"Haven’t I suggested in every weekly report that you should ’optimize’ the company structure? Don’t you understand what ’optimization’ means? Never mind, I’m just glad to see you’ve finally escaped from this misery.
Recently, I’ve lost interest in coming to work.
The game’s quite fun, and worth my time investment. But, how on earth did you track me down on the forum?
When did you even apply for testing?
No offense, but does the testing group even filter potential testers? What can a noob like you accomplish in there? Just throw more money away?"
"Hey, you could stand to show some respect you know."
The boss responded discontentedly, drinking his tea. Credit to him, he quickly picked himself back up and said:
"I’m at least a Master’s graduate from a prestigious university. Even though my major was Chinese Language and Literature, it might not make me top of the class but I am certainly one in a hundred right? Anyway, just leave. Let me...alone for a while."
"Leave you alone my ass. If I wasn’t here watching you, who knows if you would jump off a building out of grief."
Sister Pomegranate mocked:
"And one more thing, you’ve been swindled and this is all you do? You’re moping around here looking all sad. Had me thinking you were going to fly into a rage."
"Well, I did freak out! And I did it awesome this morning. It’s just a shame you didn’t see it."
The boss grumbled, reclining in his chair with his water cup, shrugging off all his burdens with a beaming smile:
"I thought about just letting it go, it’s just money after all. I don’t lack any, and my annual fund gains are much more than this.
But, the more I thought about it, the angrier I got!
I mean, I could’ve just thrown my money into the water, at least then I would’ve heard a splash. This is like paying to humiliate myself. I’m certainly not a masochist! So, I had Little Chen call for a meeting with all the section leaders and above from the whole company. I only gave them five minutes!
Anyone who was late had to pack up and get out!
You should’ve seen their faces when they rushed in."
"So, what happened next?"
Sister Pomegranate was also curious, prompting him for more.
The boss, who never smoked, plucked out a cigarette from an almost empty pack, lit it up with a one-dollar lighter, and started puffing away.
Through the smoky air, he struggled to maintain his cool demeanor but looked fired up, he elaborated:
"I mentioned that there were big problems with the company’s operations. I said that the company had been deregistered, so they no longer needed to pretend to work, and we all just disbanded. But then, those idiots wanted severance pay... Severance pay, my ass!
Not a penny!"
"Hey, isn’t this against the rules?"
Sister Pomegranate blinked, her voice elongated.
"I’m guessing you had a big argument with them?"
"Yeah, a huge one."
The boss waved his hand, seeming to recall everything that had unfolded in the meeting room that morning, he said in a hoarse voice:
"I took the report you gave me, and first confronted the marketing department. I asked them how the base price for the bid on the 17th of last month was leaked. Scolded them, how many years have they been working? Aren’t they afraid of getting struck by lightning for such blatant corruption?
Right away, they were all subdued.
Then there was the issue of the materials department pocketing money from the company, leading to losses of over seven hundred thousand in three of our warehouses. You should’ve seen it when I mentioned this, Old Wang from the materials department, his face turned green, he disregarded his face-saving pretense and began begging for mercy.
Even Sister Liu from HR was about to explode!
I asked her, how did those six new salesmen get hired from the neighboring city last month? Their education didn’t match up, their qualifications were false, even the certification numbers weren’t correct?
