"Although Cui Si and the young lady have told me that the Star Realm shadow in the outer city area is not enough to contaminate the underground water, but as the basis for our future, being able to ensure that my people don’t have to worry about fetching water still makes me feel at ease,"
"They should appreciate your care."
Maxim responded:
"I’ve never seen any noble vampire worry about such trivial matters. This alone proves that you will indeed be a wise sovereign, my lord.
You have a kindness that vampires do not possess, which is truly a supreme virtue."
"Well now, I am certain that the first potential you unlocked was indeed your silver tongue, Maxim, perhaps after we establish our influence, I should nickname you ’Smooth-Talker Mark’.
In the next few decades to come, this nickname might become familiar to all sycophantes in the Transylvania region."
Murphy hummed, causing Maxim behind him to let out a low laugh once again.
However, as they crossed the narrow corridor and entered the area where the scent of death permeated the air, Murphy and Maxim almost simultaneously drew their weapons.
What greeted them was a squared cavity, which resembled an "underground black market" that people had excavated over a long period of time. Within, nearly a hundred corpses were scattered unceremoniously in all directions.
The bodies belonged to both men and women.
Some were even children barely in their teens.
The victims’ attire suggested they were not gang members that frequented sewers. They appeared to be ordinary civilians who took refuge in the sewers after the disaster in Cardman City struck.
But they could not escape death.
"They were the victims of the Despair Spawn and Star Realm Beasts, my lord."
Maxim examined a few of the most mutilated bodies at the forefront and whispered while leaning on his spiritually imbued poisoned-blade:
"These people have probably emitted too much despair in the darkness that attracted these monsters; the narrow area prevented them from finding an escape, allowing them to meet their gruesome end here.
As for the beast... perhaps it was a crocodile? Or some kind of amphibian."
"It’s not here anymore."
Murphy’s vampire Perception allowed him to detect more details in the darkness and he spoke:
"It left at least three days ago. I cannot detect its existence within my range. Maybe the surface fire made it retreat deeper underground, or perhaps it has already returned to the Star Realm."
His gaze scanned the bodies littering the area in front of him, witnessing the despair on the decaying faces. After a few seconds, he shook his head and said:
"What a tragedy, we were one step too late."
"Don’t blame yourself, lord. You and your warriors have done enough,"
Maxim immediately tried to comfort him:
"Their escape into the sewers made it hard to find them under the cover of the Star Realm shadow..."
"No, Mark, I am not as weak as you think."
Murphy shook his head, his tone grave:
"I’m wondering how many corpses are there in this sewer? Three thousand? Five thousand? No, there should have been at least a hundred thousand living in the outer city area, and yet we only managed to save over a thousand. Not counting those unfortunate ones that got sucked into the Star Realm, the number of those who died in these sewers is enough to make you despair.
What concerns me now is that the fading Star Realm energy might allow the Spiritual Energy here to recover. The sheer amount of gruesome deaths that occurred here could spawn monstrous beings of death. Just thinking about it sends chills down my spine.
Each person can transform into a Ghoul, and there are countless places in Cardman City where criminal gangs hide corpses."
He sighed, looking at the labyrinth-like tunnel before him.
Holding the hilt of his sword, he said:
"A nest of the Ghouls and mass grave of resentful spirits is forming and will cover the entire Outer City. The number of Ghouls is conservatively estimated to be no less than ten thousand...
I am confident, Mark, that the sewer beneath our land will undoubtedly become the largest and most terrifying nest of evil spirits in the history of this continent.
In the days to come, it seems our warriors will not be short on work."
