Chapter 208: 75. Betrayal is our tradition, cold-bloodedness is our virtue【15/60】_1

(Additional Chapter for ’Humen Smoke’ brothers[5/5])

The blood-stained mask was severed by the sword and fell to the ground, the clash of the blades created short yet intense sounds, marking the lethal rhythm of the battle to the death.

Dawn was approaching, the red specks of light emitted signaled the retreat of the mother of the night.

Regrettably, she withdrew her blessing, rendering all creatures of the night weakened by daylight, and let searing light turned into flame, starting to burn entities shunned by the light.

Arthur felt as if he was burning up!

Even though his armor was enough to deflect the sunlight, the resistance towards light and heat in the vampire tradition caused him to lose strength with every swing of his sword.

In contrast, Maxim, despite his many wounds, was not defeated by the accumulated pain. Instead, he took advantage of his opponent’s weakness, rallying his strength and turned the tide of the battle.

"Thump."

Almost simultaneously, the swift swords protruded by both parties pierced each other’s riddled armor. Maxim was forced to step back, concealing the blood seeping from his chest.

He staggered a bit but his vampire opponent was in much worse shape.

The damage was not just caused by sunlight searing his flesh through the gaps of his armor, but also due to accumulated spirit energy poison from multiple hits by a poisoned blade reaching its limit, rendering the vampire incapable of resistance under the weakening effect of sunlight.

He wobbled back while blood, now a dark shade, spewed from his mouth.

Arthur felt the power of the night was waning. The shadow of defeat that came with Maxim’s impending attack grew denser, and the encroaching shadow scared him!

It left him nowhere to go and installed panic in his eyes.

No!

It should not have ended this way!

He had been empowered by Lord Jed with the true strength!

This monster standing before him was just a common human. Why could he be stronger than a vampire?

This was not fair!

"I gave up everything for this power! Why are you?"

Arthur roared.

He furiously and weakly brandished his swift sword, his broken spirit and physical defenses made him shout out:

"I have risked my life for him countless times for his attention and favor. I even sacrificed you, my brother who grew up with me for this.

You should be dead, Mark!

You’re already dead, aren’t you? The one standing before me is just a ghost who refuses to die!

That’s why I can’t defeat you.

I can’t possibly defeat you, because how can a dead man die again?

You monster!

Go to hell!"

The vampire used the last of his strength to prop up his smoke-emitting body under the sunlight and charged at Maxim. He was effortlessly evaded by Maxim’s agile dark step. The swift sword named Ambition and Dream were swung, disarming his opponent and then kicking him, making him fall clumsily on the ground.

"I’m not a monster!"

Maxim’s face mask had been torn open.

The wound crossed his face and nose, allowing blood to coat his pale skin, unusual for a common man.

But there was a flame burning in his eyes.

He took a step forward and straddled his once sworn brother, the sharp blade against Arthur’s heart, he roared:

"You! You’re the real monster! I used to feel inferior about it that being different from you made me feel inferior, but now I know!

My unique difference from you folk is what brings me joy, being the same as you would rather make me sick!

You!

Arthur, you’re the same as the people who mocked me!

Getting paltry happiness from other people’s misfortunes to persist through hard times and being hopelessly engrossed in such shameful desires.

You guys...

You!

You guys are the real monsters!"

"Thump."

The blade thrust down with a force weighing a ton.

Imbued with the sheen of green and crimson, it pierced Arthur’s armor, tearing through his heart and reaching the ground behind. The vampire went into a violent spasm at this moment before losing all strength and let his mangled hand crash onto the ground.

"Huff, huff..."

Maxim, seriously injured but successfully defeated a vampire, was panting heavily.

At this moment, he felt all his battle energy was drained, but on the flip side, he felt like a new wave of energy was flowing into his now empty body.

He had crossed the threshold!

That line between ordinary and extraordinary, allowing his hidden potential to finally be unleashed and molded the stairway to depart from being ’ordinary’.

Maxim stumbled up and pulled out his weapon, then, with his hand on his chest, staggered back a few steps.

He clumsily took a roll of bandage and medicine from his spirit bag, but he didn’t notice that behind him, Arthur, who was supposedly "dead", suddenly opened his eyes.

While struggling to get up from the smoke-shrouded body, his eyes turned bloody red and more brutal.

"Idiot!"

He yelled:

"I am a vampire! I am an undying! I am a creature who feed on blood and live forever! You won, but you will die!"

Maxim paid him no mind.

He acted as if he hadn’t heard him while unwrapping his bandages.

This arrogant conduct enraged the already hideous Arthur under the sunlight. He managed to stagger forward, ready to replenish his blood and resurrect, but in the next instant...

"Thump."

A crimson claw casually pierced through Arthur’s heart from his back, making him freeze in his tracks.
