Chapter 206: 74. Loyalty and Monster [14/60]_2

"Why are you in the Hunting Illusion?"

Natalie asked sharply:

"You’re a non-combatant!"

"Ah, you guys launched the illusion so suddenly; I couldn’t get out in time."

Major Fraser said with a headache:

"Besides, I wasn’t the only one unexpectedly caught up in it..."

"Swish"

Seeing that the two guys in front of her were chatting away, not showing her much respect, the white-haired female vampire growled and lunged at them again.

This time she moved even faster, planning to kill this audacious human Major before he could fire a bullet.

But...

"Bang"

Another gunshot forced her to retreat again.

This time, Natalie looked to her left. Miss Milian, who looked rather annoyed, also walked out with her crimson hand cannon. Compared to Major Fraser’s genteel demeanor, this fierce Transylvanian girl had far less restraint.

She cursed, gun in hand:

"Can you jerks give a warning before launching a spell next time? I’m the real non-combatant here!"

---

"Swish"

A bit away from Cardman City, in a deserted village, Maxim, who was eating hardtack in front of a carriage, looked up.

A figure fell rapidly from the night sky just before dawn, landing in an odd posture with wings folded. After landing, he strode towards Maxim.

"Maxim? Ah, my ’monster’ brother, it’s been a long time."

The man adopted a friendly posture, extending his arms in greeting to Maxim as if they were old friends. Maxim set down his hardtack, stood up, pulled down his face shield, and replied in a hoarse voice:

"Hello, Arthur, indeed it’s been a long time. Congratulations on becoming the vampire you always aspired to be."

"I merely preceded you. My loyalty and potential were recognized by Lord Jed, and in a critical moment, I was generously granted new strength by our master.

But don’t worry.

You’ve also found yourself a new master, haven’t you?

Although Lord Murphy’s reputation within the family... heh, but that doesn’t matter, he seems to be a good match for you.

Monsters and wastes..."

The tall vampire Arthur, who seemed familiar with Maxim, was making rude jokes.

He stood a few steps away from Maxim, looking at his "brother" who seemed different from before, and glanced at the carriage behind him.

He could sense a frail vampire inside the carriage.

That must be Lady Cui Si, whom Lord Jed had specifically mentioned.

"So you indeed brought her here, as commanded by Lord Jed. Good, Mark! I am glad to see you maintaining your proud loyalty. Lord Jed would be pleased and reward you."

Waving his hand, Vampire Arthur said to Maxim:

"You can leave now, I’ll take care of the rest."

"Is it Lord Jed’s command?"

Maxim asked.

This unnecessary question vexed Arthur. Holding back his impatience, he said:

"Of course, didn’t I just say you can leave? You were never this troublesome before."

Maxim looked around at the surrounding night.

It was the darkest moment before dawn, and the surroundings of this deserted village were eerily quiet - perfect by any grave’s standard. His fingers twitched as he asked:

"Did you come alone? Where are the others?"

"That’s none of your business! Mark, be a good boy and go."

Arthur was no longer willing to waste time talking with his ’bread-eating’ brother from the past. He walked past Maxim towards Lady Cui Si’s carriage.

Behind him, Maxim gently gripped his "Ambition and Dreams" Swift Sword on his waist. He muttered:

"Arthur, do you remember this place?"

"This place?"

Vampire Arthur looked around. He replied impatiently:

"Isn’t it just a ruined, deserted village? There are places like this everywhere from the Ten-Year War. What are you trying to say?"

"It’s a pity, you seem to have forgotten."

The blade slowly unsheathed.

The blade, emitting a faint green glow, made a strange whistling sound as it rubbed against the scabbard.

Behind the vampire, Maxim flexed his shoulders, speaking lowly:

"This is where we were born, where we grew up, wandered, got adopted by Lord Jed, became Blood Servants, and dreamed about the future together in the dimly lit hut.

They called me ’Monster’, and they called you ’Giant’.

Those distant memories seem like something from another life now, don’t they, Arthur?"

"Mark! Put your weapon away!"

The vampire sensed something was wrong.

He grabbed his Swift Sword hanging at his waist, turned towards Maxim, who had assumed the Blood Vulture swordsmanship stance, and said:

"Don’t be foolish!"

In response to this final warning, Maxim’s response was...

Charge!

"Clang"

The two blades met in an instant.

Maxim’s charge was effortlessly blocked by the vampire Arthur, who was renowned for his brute strength even before his transformation. After becoming a vampire, his strength had significantly enhanced.

The collision of their weapons sent sparks flying. They stood almost face-to-face, just outside the deserted village.

Time seemed to freeze at this moment. Those crimson eyes stared at the face shield blocking their view, yet they could still see the disappointment flaming in the eyes behind the slits.
