Chapter 192: 69. True unity must be built on blood, either his or yours! [9/60] _1

(Extra post for the brother of ’Frostfang’s Claw’ [4/5])

Murphy left the house.

He took the "daylight potion" bestowed upon him by Jed, a concoction specifically to induce weakness in vampires, and resolved to join Jed in the final power struggle against the Blood Vulture Clan.

However, Jed didn’t truly trust him, Murphy was aware of that. He was just a pawn to Jed, being manipulated with the promise of future power to betray his current friends.

It was a familiar sequence of events.

Especially in traditional vampire society, it was almost impossible for one vampire to fully trust another.

It wasn’t merely blood flowing in their veins. It was a lethal cocktail of conspiracy and malice, fermented in the darkness of night.

A touch meant death, a glimpse meant silence.

Several minutes after Murphy left, the door to the house was opened again.

This time, it was Maxim who walked in.

He wore his hood low to cover his face, holding a bottle and seven tall cups in his hands. It was not easy to find such fancy items in Cardman City during these times. Thanks to the talents of Sir Morphy’s warriors, and the stockpiles at Milian’s place, they were available.

"Sir, have a drink."

Maxim poured the crimson liquid from the bottle into a cup and handed it to Jed. The feeble vampire took the cup, abandoning the pretense of courtesy.

At that moment, he was like a crude, greedy drinker, throwing his head back to drain the cup of its blood like a fine wine.

"Mmm..."

The blood slipped down his throat, transforming into raw strength that quenched his parched body. As he moaned in satisfaction, the visible signs of old age and wrinkles on his face vanished, as if he had consumed a life-giving elixir.

However, his once dark hair remained grey.

Harm to the blood essence was not something a vampire could recover from quickly, akin to men suffering from diminished vitality.

Rushing wouldn’t solve the problem!

This kind of damage needed time for a full recuperation.

"You didn’t tell Murphy about my revival, Maxim. It appears you remain loyal." Jed murmured.

His voice was no longer dry, instead carrying the inherent malice and darkness of his kind. Maxim, head bowed, didn’t respond. Instead, he poured another cup of the sweet blood, taken from the virgins at the camp, and handed it to Jed like a faithful servant.

"He trusts you."

Jed didn’t exhibit the brash mannerisms of before.

He had regained the elegance of a midnight aristocrat, swirling the sweet substance gently in his hand, looking at Maxim’s expression through the ripples in the blood.

He said:

"He mentioned you to me, hoping that I could transfer you to his side. He sees potential in you.

Now, I...

I realize my oversight.

Just as I failed to see the hidden talent in Murphy, I also overlooked an exceptional individual like you among my servants. So, Maxim, would you be willing to follow Murphy?"

"I am your servant."

Maxim said in a deep voice:

"I owe you my life, an unforgettable favor that must be repaid with this very life!"

"Excellent!"

Jed was extremely pleased with this response.

Maxim didn’t hide his admiration and willingness to follow Murphy, but he also honestly expressed his thoughts. Jed, a master of manipulation, knew that this internal struggle was natural for susceptible humans.

The more steadfast or loyal Maxim was, the more suspect he became.

"Then I need you to do one last thing for me in your capacity as a servant, a necessity on the path to gaining freedom."

Jed took a small sip of blood, flicked his finger, and a familiar vial of daylight potion fell into Maxim’s hands.

He said:

"Murphy is a promising descendant. I suspect he agreed to cooperate just to stabilize me and gage offers from both sides to maximize his payout.

If I were him, I would do the same.

However, the situation has changed, and I must... ’help’ him make up his mind. Slip this potion into Lady Cui Si’s drink and hide her away.

Don’t harm her until everything is over.

I don’t need your involvement in this, Maxim.

I just need Murphy to feel a bit of pressure. Then, once our alliance is complete, you can have what you desire, and we, we can all have what we want."

Maxim nodded.

He seemed to be at a loss, but finally asked:

"Sir, you clearly have the upper hand. Phemys is on her own, and she’s merely a black iron rank. Any of your comrades could take her down.

Why do you insist on..."

"It’s not for you to know, Maxim. You’re not one of us yet; the secrets of the night are not at the disposal of mere humans!"

Jed glanced coldly at his servant.

Maxim bowed and stepped out. Before leaving, he said to Jed:

"I have begun selecting ’food’ that suits your tastes. I’ll have it delivered to you first thing tomorrow. Please, bear with it for the time being."

"Mmm."

Jed watched Maxim leave. When the room was silent again, he rose, burdened by the weight of his body, to pick up the bottle Maxim had brought. From the dozen or so offspring lying on the floor behind him, Jed chose a big one and poured the blood onto it.
