Lu Weixi hurried over, “When did you get here?”

Qin Zhiyou didn’t even have to think, “At five.”

Five, so he had been waiting for her for two hours? Lu Weixi became a bit anxious, “Why didn’t you call me?”

Qin Zhiyou looked at her seriously, then smiled, “I had Wang’s secretary ask Xiaochen. She said you were in a meeting and it wouldn’t end anytime soon. I didn’t want to disturb you.”

Lu Weixi paused. He had never said “I didn’t want to disturb you” before. In the past, if there was something urgent, either she compromised on her own, or he adamantly demanded she compromise. Alternatively, Qin Zhiyou might have used some other means to sort things out for her. Or perhaps, he quietly took care of it without telling her.

Such simple words, yet they left her feeling a mix of emotions.

“But don’t worry, I didn’t wait too long. Since you were still in your meeting, I went to the supermarket and got some groceries. There were no parking spaces here, so I parked over there.” These past few days, he hadn’t thought about asking Aunt Hao to come over. For five years, even in their West Mountain villa, their world had been crowded. Besides both their families, there were Aunt Hao and servants. For these last five days, he just wanted to spend some peaceful time alone with her.

Lu Weixi nodded, aware that there was a large supermarket nearby, just a ten-minute walk. The two walked together. After their marriage, it wasn’t like they hadn’t had time alone. Their wedding, though not as grand as Qin Zhizha’s and Cai Yiren’s, had invited all the necessary friends and relatives. Although Qin Zhigu was preparing to go abroad the day after their wedding, going abroad didn’t mean vacationing. Preparations such as visas, luggage, and documents all needed to be made. During the time before he left, Qin Zhiyou had taken her to the Maldives for a weeklong getaway just for the two of them.

But what they seldom had was this quiet stroll down the street. No one spoke, not out of awkwardness, but because the atmosphere was so harmonious. The noisy streets, the lively shops, the standing streetlamps, the flowing traffic beside them. They walked at a moderate pace, Qin Zhiyou saw her carrying a bag and holding documents, and took them from her. As they turned a corner, an electric bike came speeding around and almost hit Lu Weixi, but Qin Zhiyou quickly pulled her into his arms and thereafter didn’t let go of her hand.

Once they reached the parking garage and drove out, Lu Weixi couldn’t find her seat belt buckle, so Qin Zhiyou turned and leaned over to help her fasten it. Their distance was neither too close nor too far–any closer would have seemed too intimate, but farther apart would have felt quite distant. As a couple of five years, they understood each other well; she didn’t need to say thank you, and he didn’t need to ask for any favors.

They drove home, and upon opening the trunk, Qin Zhiyou had indeed bought a trunk full of groceries, as if preparing for hibernation. Fortunately, over the years, Lu Weixi had transformed from a haughty young lady to a Mrs. Qin whom everyone overlooked. Although they had Aunt Hao and servants around, she could still manage to cook a few simple dishes.

However, the difference now was that when she went into the kitchen, Qin Zhiyou followed her, not to mess around, but to help her sort and prepare the ingredients, washing and chopping vegetables.
