Chapter 414 Midnight Selfie

Chapter 414: Chapter 414 Midnight Selfie

Having only a drop of blood left, Han Fei staying in the Deep World was only causing a nuisance for the neighbors, who then had to split their attention to protect him. Therefore, after spending three hours, he found a safe room and logged off.

The neighbors seemed to have grown accustomed to it, aware that Han Fei was preparing to leave, Ying Yue carrying the fish tank and the One-eyed Firefly Dragon had conscientiously stationed themselves at Han Fei’s door.

They would wait there until Han Fei reappeared and wouldn’t leave for any reason.

As bloodshed arrived, when Han Fei’s consciousness was separating, he could distinctly feel a moist sensation on his back as if something was leaning against his body back to back.

The bloody person finally approached him, but, for now, did not harm him.

From the direction of the Plastic Surgery Hospital, Gesheng, holding an elder’s skull, was sitting desolately on the rooftop. Importantly, the elder’s skull had opened its eyes and was regarding Han Fei with a gaze that was familiar yet disconcerting.

The solidifying blood world was a very unique experience; it seemed to occur in an instant, yet also appeared as if time was infinitely stretched.

Before he had a chance to look closely, Han Fei had already exited the game.

Removing his gaming helmet, Han Fei found his back soaked with cold sweat; it had been a long time since he had experienced such primal fear.

"The bloody person behind me, Gesheng, Fu Sheng’s Memory Fragments, the Plastic Surgery Hospital — I still have many things to face," he said.

Removing his shirt, Han Fei massaged his temples: "There is not a single safe place in the Deep World; it feels like a vortex pulling me deeper into pitch-black despair."

Now, Han Fei could no longer turn back; he had chosen his path and could only move forward, even though he knew what lay ahead was the Abyss.

Climbing out of the Game Box, Han Fei searched online for information about Xia Yilan and Xia Yi, and even joined fan support groups for both celebrities.

Both had beauty that could overthrow cities, and their names seemed quite similar, but the atmosphere in each fan group was completely different.

The ten fan groups Xia Yilan had set up were all full, still bustling at around three in the morning, as everyone prepared for activities the next day, including various ways to support her.

Xia Yi’s fan group was the only one, not even created by Xia Yi herself; it was spontaneously formed by some people mourning her after her death.

People in the group could not believe such a lovely and beautiful girl would make the most extreme choice, and to this day, many refused to look at the last message Xia Yi posted.

The fan group leader was a middle-aged woman in her forties, whose profession had nothing to do with the entertainment sector, nor was she Xia Yi’s agent.

The woman worked with end-of-life care services, and her first client was her own daughter, who was seriously ill.

The early death of her daughter was a thorn in her heart, which might also have been why she adored Xia Yi.

She had known Xia Yi for a long time, and they even lived in the same neighborhood.

The woman saw the shadow of her daughter in Xia Yi; Xia Yi too, having lost her parents to an accident ten years ago, had found long-missing affection in this woman.

After Xia Yi died, the woman nearly collapsed and went all over posting that Xia Yi could not have taken her own life, insisting there was something that needed to be looked into thoroughly.

Unfortunately, under the manipulation of Flowing Light, nobody believed her, and even if it was about a deceased person, there was still defamation involved.

Although it had been three months since the incident, many of the defamers had long forgotten about the matter, but the woman still hadn’t moved on.

Han Fei memorized all the information about Xia Yi in the group, then went to see the group leader.

As a fan of Xia Yi, he spoke about the circumstances of Flowing Light pushing Xia Yi to her death, even listing some evidence.

After Han Fei sent the information, at four in the morning, the kindly middle-aged woman invited Han Fei to a voice call, and for the first time, this ordinary woman spoke with such fury.

"Are they even human!"

"They are merely clad in human skin," Han Fei told the woman what he knew but repeatedly admonished her not to act rashly and that this matter needed to be handled in collaboration with the police.

Having gained the woman’s trust, Han Fei started to ask her more in-depth questions, not just about Xia Yi, but also her parents.

The group leader did not know much about Xia Yi’s parents, only aware they worked at the Plastic Surgery Hospital in the far suburbs of Xinhu, often working night shifts, and did not seem to care much about Xia Yi.

What surprised her was that despite being totally neglected, Xia Yi had still become an exceptional child.

Intelligent, hardworking, beautiful, confident, optimistic—she seemed to possess every desirable quality in the world, almost like an extraordinarily shining diamond.

Long ago, the group leader had noticed Xia Yi in the neighborhood and had imagined countless times how wonderful it would be if Xia Yi were her own daughter.

Despite her parents not being strict, Xia Yi’s academic performance topped her class, and her walls were plastered with various certificates. She also had a wide range of hobbies, including dancing, singing, and playing several musical instruments.

This child was the epitome of "someone else’s kid." But unfortunately, this did not last long.

After the accidental death of Xia Yi’s parents, she completely succumbed to helplessness and grief. She no longer strived, nor was she happy anymore, and her eyes lost their brightness. Perhaps the only thing that did not change was her beauty.

Under the joint care of the older sister and community support, Xia Yi gradually emerged from despair and began to live her life earnestly.

The group leader always accompanied Xia Yi as she grew up, believing she knew her best. But who could have expected that the girl would suddenly leave?

To provide more assistance to Han Fei, the group leader even sent him the photos she had taken with Xia Yi, along with some information Xia Yi had left behind.

From those texts, it was clear that Xia Yi was indeed a perfect person; she possessed all the most desirable traits of humanity. Such a child, if she grew up smoothly, was bound to excel in her profession.

"Personality reshaping?"

Han Fei looked at the information left by Xia Yi, but his mind kept reverting to Eternal Life Pharmaceutical’s personality reshaping. Initially, he thought it was far-fetched, but after seeing Xia Yi’s life story, he vaguely felt it might genuinely exist.

"She really was perfect, like a flawless piece of crystal clear art," he thought.

If Xia Yi had all the best traits, Han Fei felt as if the ’Kuangxiao’ in his mind was the exact opposite.

"Huh?" While browsing through the photos, Han Fei suddenly noticed something odd, "Group leader, could you send me the last few selfies of Xia Yi according to the dates they were taken?"

"Did you notice something?" the group leader asked, still immersed in sadness.

"All the selfies Xia Yi took seemed to unintentionally capture a clock in her house, and the time on the clock was always midnight." Han Fei had observed all the photos. Since a week before her death, Xia Yi consistently took photos at midnight, all featuring the presence of a clock, some reflected inadvertently through a TV screen, some caught in mirrors, but always visible.

More crucially, looking at the lighting and the outside scenery, Han Fei found that one of these seven selfies was not taken at noon but at midnight.

Han Fei wanted to figure out which day before her death that midnight photo was taken and what exactly happened on that day.

"The midnight one was the last photo taken before she passed away," the older sister organized and sent them again in chronological order.

"This is rather strange," Han Fei squinted as he carefully examined that last selfie.

The expression on Xia Yi’s face hadn’t changed, and the placement of objects in the room seemed normal, except for one peculiar detail.

"Xia Yi didn’t have children, nor did she participate in any activities to aid children. Why would there be a child’s shoe in her room? And not just a pair, but only one?"

Han Fei zoomed into the last photo, where Xia Yi, with her back to the living room door, had taken the photo, and there lay a single pure white shoe in the entrance of her apartment.

"Yes! But what can this shoe tell us?"

"That child’s shoe didn’t fall from the shoe rack; the toe of the shoe pointed directly at Xia Yi, almost as if a child was standing at her door. Could someone have intentionally positioned it there? Was there someone else in her apartment?" Han Fei muttered to himself, startling the group leader.

"Are you suggesting that Xia Yi could have been murdered? That it was done by those bastards from Flowing Light?"

"It’s too early to conclude. I will hand this information over to the police to see what they think," Han Fei thought immediately of seeking help from the authorities, considering this might be a murder case, and he was just an actor with a bit of physical strength.

"You sound very familiar with the police. Are you a cop?" the group leader asked excitedly.

"I can’t say for now. You need to be careful, and it’s best not to go near Xia Yi’s house in the meantime," Han Fei said before hanging up the phone, sensing that things were getting complicated.

After organizing the information and speculations about Xia Yi, Han Fei handed them over to the police at five in the morning; the on-duty officer commended him for his dedication.

After dawn, Han Fei quickly ate something and headed to the Meat Factory Courtyard for Family.

His final act in "The Mystery Novelist" had ended, and now he was preparing for a film festival as an actor.
