Chapter 211: Chapter 211: Start Your Performance
Upon learning that Butterfly might act against him in this building, Han Fei didn’t panic too much; he had already called Li Xue before coming, and the police had quietly completed their surveillance setup.
Having fought his way through the depths of Deep World, Han Fei was no longer the dispirited, minor actor he once was.
Standing casually anywhere, even those skilled in combat couldn’t detect any flaws in him—all instincts Han Fei honed in Deep World.
The man who had been pursuing Butterfly now felt a trace of a super criminal’s sensation within himself.
What was more terrifying was that his growth rate was extremely fast; Butterfly had actually missed the optimal time to kill him.
The one-sided overpowering situation had been reversed, and now the skirmishes between Han Fei and Butterfly resembled a battle between two super criminals using different powers to try to take each other down.
Closing the book in his hands, Han Fei had just decided to continue his search in the study when his phone suddenly vibrated—Director Zhang was notifying everyone to gather downstairs.
Leaving room 401, Han Fei heard the faint sound of wind chimes echoing in the hall as he walked downstairs.
The sun slowly set, and night fell.
The crew continued to transform the filming location, while Director Zhang and the other actors had all entered the Meat Factory Courtyard for Family.
During this time, Han Fei also found Director Zhang to remind him that Butterfly might appear in the crew, asking him to strengthen their guard.
But it seemed Director Zhang didn’t take it seriously, now no matter what anyone else said, he insisted on continuing to shoot this film.
Director Zhang had great ambition for this film and wanted to rely on it to win major awards.
He spent the entire afternoon talking to the actors individually, analyzing each Personality of Spider.
In order to recreate the truth to the greatest extent, Director Zhang even found a Doctor who had once dealt with Spider and brought them along to communicate with the actors.
Now, except for Han Fei, all the actors had a deep understanding of their characters, and everyone knew that if the play was a hit, it would greatly benefit all involved—so they were all very committed.
"Let’s enter the filming area, and we can start to get in sync," Director Zhang said.
Director Zhang and two staff members led all actors to the fourth floor of the Courtyard—this level had been cleared and was very quiet.
"You all should have read the script, right? Before the first victim appeared, all Personalities were gathered in this room. According to Spider’s records in ’Butcher’s House,’ they were preparing for a special trip, and eventually, Spider chose the Meat Factory Courtyard for Family."
"After they moved in here, bizarre events started happening, and one by one, Personalities were murdered."
Director Zhang pushed open the door to room 404 and walked in: "To prevent the filming from damaging Spider’s home, we’ve recreated it inside room 404. You can perform freely without worrying about damaging Spider’s Relics; everything here is a replica."
The nine actors filed in and took their places in different parts of the room as per the script.
"I’ve given everyone an afternoon to delve into your characters. Now it’s your turn; I hope you can adjust your states quickly and immerse yourselves in your roles." Director Zhang wanted to spark clashes between nine actors with entirely different Personalities, and he also wanted to see whether there were any aspects of the character portrayal that needed adjustment.
The Personalities of the other eight actors were fixed, but Han Fei, playing the Writer, was an exception. As Director Zhang left the room, he gave Han Fei an encouraging look.
As the door closed, Director Zhang left with the staff, and only the nine actors remained in room 404, which had been completely restored to look like Spider’s room.
His gaze swept over all the actors in the room, and Han Fei put down the script in his hand, as he went over everyone’s information in his mind one last time.
Han Fei: Plays the primary personality, referred to as Writer, the character is thirty-one years old, mentally long-term split and self-contradictory, personality pending, requires the actor to deeply contemplate the character’s inner world.
Zhang Lie (a third-tier actor with strong abilities, adept at portraying villains): The second personality, thirty-two years old, referred to as Thug, short-tempered, impulsive and easily irritable, skilled in fighting and brawling, possesses combat techniques.
Bai Xian (a second-tier actor with strong abilities, twice nominated for the Movie Emperor award): The third personality, forty years old, referred to as Doctor, mature, rational, cautious, and suspicious, heals the fissures between personalities, sustains the relationships among nine personalities, wishing for a healthy coexistence of all nine.
Little Tong (a singer who successfully transitioned, with a very broad fan base): The fourth personality, twenty-one years old, referred to as College Student, cheerful, optimistic, and positive, possessing a personality completely opposite to that of Spider, belonging to the type of person Spider envies.
Li Ran (an up-and-coming second-tier actress with strong abilities): The fifth personality, twenty-seven years old, referred to as Teacher, beautiful, kind, good-hearted, and gentle, responsible for educating and mediating conflicts.
Li Huaiming (a nationally renowned actor): The sixth personality, sixty-four years old, referred to as Uncle Li, exceedingly cunning, would do anything to ensure his own survival, outwardly amiable but inwardly ruthless, displaying significant antisocial tendencies.
Candy (a well-known child star): The seventh personality, eleven years old, referred to as Ameng, stutters, naive, has seen much, enjoys painting.
He Wanqiu (a specially invited instructor at the Xinhu Film and Television Institute, once a first-tier actress in her younger days): The eighth personality, forty-nine years old, referred to as Chef, with a complexity only second to Writer, developed a severe obsessive-compulsive disorder before the first murder, extremely kind, responsible for all the cleanliness at home and in the building; after the first murder, she underwent a huge personality change, transforming from Chef to Butcher.
Fu Sisi (a third-tier actress with strong abilities, author of popular romance novels): The ninth personality, referred to as Reader, likes to communicate with Writer, seldom appears in Butcher’s house, mostly communicates with Writer through letters. There is some controversy over the order of the ninth personality’s emergence, with some believing she was the first to appear, while others think she was the last.
All nine actors could very well be considered talented, and according to the rankings available online, only those ranked between fiftieth and two hundred have the credentials to be considered second-tier actors, while those between two hundred and five hundred are classified as third-tier.
For an actor like Han Fei, who ranks in the thousands, he’s far below the others, and his selection by Director Zhang was solely due to his brilliant performance in Twin Flowers.
However, unlike those inconsequential actors like Acheng, no one in the room looked down on Han Fei. Everyone was well aware that if Director Zhang dared entrust the critical role of Writer to Han Fei, it meant that Han Fei must have something exceptional about him.
The room door was closed, and after a brief calm, that clean-shaven, slightly effeminate middle-aged man put down his script, "I won’t bother with pleasantries. You’re all celebrities, and there’s no need for introductions. Let’s dive right into character, shall we? Let’s recreate the scene here where Spider first conceived the desire to kill."
He pointed to a segment in the script where the nine personalities first came together: "The timing is just right, Director Zhang has gone to great lengths to recreate Spider’s room, so let’s try to channel Spider’s mindset."
The effeminate middle-aged man was Bai Xian, who was the most famous person there. However, he carried no airs about him, and everything he did and said was centered around the play.
"You’ve all read the script, right?" Bai Xian glanced at the watch on the wall, "We start at eight o’clock sharp. If anyone encounters a problem, it’s fine, don’t get stuck, just move on. Our main goal is to blend with each other, to understand each other’s style and approach to acting. After we’ve acted it out, we’ll look at what issues we have, as this is also a rare learning opportunity."
With some time left until eight o’clock, the other eight actors were getting into character in their own ways, yet Han Fei silently stared out at the night outside the window.
"The old man on the fifth floor has repeatedly warned us not to talk about anything related to Spider after dark, as doing so would invite misfortune, almost as if there’s a ghost present everywhere within these walls."
Han Fei had also warned Director Zhang and the other staff members, but no one took it to heart. In other words, even if Han Fei weren’t here, they would still continue shooting.
At this moment, all Han Fei could do was try his best to look after the others, to prevent them from being killed by Butterfly.
Thinking this, Han Fei suddenly froze, fixating on the other eight people in the room.
"Spider must have experienced something like this, to seek salvation through slaughter, or to slaughter in the name of salvation..."
All the clues and information related to Spider intricately intertwined in his mind, and Han Fei let his memories and emotions settle. At this moment, he was Spider, and he wanted to consider from Spider’s perspective how to catch Butterfly.
