Chapter 139: The Telephone Line on the Corpse

Chapter 139: Chapter 139: The Telephone Line on the Corpse

The eyes full of malice of room 302’s guest closed, and her body completely turned into shredded paper.

As her soul scattered, a sudden system notification appeared in Han Fei’s mind, "Player number 0000, please take note! Your staff member Yinglong is severely injured! Please find him soon; otherwise, the mission will fail."

"Is there a time limit for this mission?"

Han Fei had wanted to search the room for a while longer, but after hearing the system’s voice, he didn’t stay any longer, picked up a box of blades on the floor, and walked to the door.

The corridor was empty; it seemed the guests had long grown accustomed to the strange sounds occasionally coming from room 302.

"It’s unnaturally quiet."

After the guest from room 302 had died, something in the hotel had changed.

Worried about Yinglong’s safety, Han Fei decided not to waste more time. He retrieved the key to room 304 from the Spiritual Altar and headed to the deepest part of the hallway.

As he inserted the key into the lock, the telephone inside room 304 rang as the door opened.

The ringing broke the deadly silence, echoing clearly throughout the entire building.

Han Fei darted into room 304 and picked up the telephone beside the nightstand.

A faint wheezing sound came from the other end of the receiver, and after a few seconds, the voice spoke two words, "Leave quickly..."

The voice from the phone was deep and weak; Han Fei could tell it was Yinglong’s, "Where are you in the hotel?"

"Don’t talk to me, don’t reply, just leave!" Yinglong seemed to be struggling with his last bit of strength; after he spoke these words, sounds of tearing wounds came from the other end of the phone.

The call was still not disconnected, and after hearing the sound of wounds being ripped open, Han Fei immediately realized that there was someone else with Yinglong.

It was that person who was holding the phone, torturing Yinglong, forcing him to speak.

Having hung up the call proactively, Han Fei glanced at the red telephone wire embedded in the wall. The wire resembled blood vessels inside a human body.

"Yinglong didn’t want me to talk, it seems anything communicated through the phone might pick up something," Han Fei reacted too quickly, he had been suspicious of the telephone since he first entered the hotel, and now combined with Yinglong’s warnings, he was certain there was something wrong with the hotel’s phones.

Picking up the blade, Han Fei tried to cut the telephone wire, but the thin red strands were much tougher than he had imagined; the blades from the room 302 guest couldn’t cut through it at all.

"Ghost Face, see if you can bite through it?"

Just as Han Fei was about to try another method, a dark red ghost face loomed into room 304, the figure holding a wine bottle staggered into the room.

After approaching Han Fei, the figure suddenly accelerated, its flesh swelling red and oozing blood, the body began to twist and deform, resembling a mound of fleshy mud.

Without Han Fei’s order, Ghost Face immediately attacked the drunkard.

Ghost Face was a grudge, and the drunkard was just a regret cursed. It couldn’t harm Ghost Face, but instead, its own wounds multiplied.

If this continued, the drunkard would be killed sooner or later, but Han Fei felt something was not quite right.

The drunkard’s state resembled Yinglong when he had been controlled by the Paperman, oblivious and dazed, losing his own consciousness, and continuously attacking, seeking to trade blow for blow with Ghost Face.

Just as the drunkard was about to have his soul scattered, the system’s voice echoed in Han Fei’s mind again, "Player number 0000, please take note! Your staff member Yinglong’s self-consciousness is about to collapse! Please find him quickly; otherwise, the mission will fail."

As the system notification sounded the second time, Han Fei eyed the nearly soul-scattered drunkard, narrowing his eyes.

"The system first alerted me about Yinglong’s injury when room 302’s guest was being consumed by the Paperman, the second reminder about Yinglong’s impending collapse of consciousness came as this drunkard was about to be killed, twice in a row, it can’t be a coincidence!"

Glancing back at the telephone, an idea formed in Han Fei’s mind.

"Can the true owner of this hotel transfer damage?"

Han Fei immediately told Ghost Face to stop, forcefully pulling the telephone wire off the handset, with blood flowing from the socket, and something resembling a human organ growing at the end of the wire.

"Forget about the guests! Let’s go to the first floor!"

Han Fei had an excellent memory; he clearly remembered that when he first entered the hotel, the boss was also on the phone, and the wire from the counter stretched all the way down.

"If the telephone is indeed a cursed item within the hotel, then the place it’s hidden must be underneath the hotel!"

Having figured this out, Han Fei, holding the Spiritual Altar and accompanied by Cry, rushed out of room 304.

As they ran downstairs, all the telephones in each room of the hotel started ringing, the tightly shut room doors opened, and the guests walked out from within as if sleepwalking.

"Don’t mind them!"

The incessant ringing tortured his eardrums as Han Fei rushed to the first floor, where the raincoat-clad boss was watching him with a sinister grin.

The wooden stairs creaked, and the sound of cluttered footsteps arose as ghostly shadows dashed down from the upper floors.

"I’m sorry, dear guest, but you can only check out at this time tomorrow," the boss said, flipping back the brim of his raincoat to reveal a noticeable crack on his head. "If you insist on checking out early, then we will have to charge you the rent in advance."

A hand slowly extended from beneath the raincoat, holding an axe used for chopping bones.

Seeing that the guests from upstairs were also running down, Han Fei had no other choice: "Li Zai!"

"Is it time to eat?"

A dark shadow emerged from the cracks of the Spiritual Altar, and a tall, thin man tore open his stomach, revealing another face hidden inside.

"Let your brother come out! Quick. Smash through this floor!"

The situation was even more critical than Han Fei had anticipated. The tall man nodded, "You’d better stand back."

His body bent at an incredible angle, directly inserting his own head into the mouth in his stomach!

This horrific scene even outdid the ghosts and monsters in the hotel, and Han Fei hadn’t expected the brothers’ fusion to be so terrifying.

The mouth on the stomach bit off the tall man’s head, swallowing his sanity, leaving only despair and madness.

The shadow doubled in size; the corpulent Li Huo began hammering the floor like a madman.

The three-story building shook gently, and the hollowed-out floor below was soon smashed open by Li Huo, creating a large hole.

Sawdust flew around, and a pungent stench wafted up from below. Han Fei covered his nose and looked down the hole, the scene before him giving even a battle-hardened man like him a moment of fear.

Beneath the guesthouse was a pit for hiding corpses!

Bodies were interlocked and intertwined, wrapped haphazardly in blood-red telephone wires. Some wires even pierced through their skin, embedding deep within their flesh.

"Yinglong?"

The one-eyed clerk was caught in the middle of the bodies, protecting a small child and a woman’s body in his arms.

The woman looked gentle and kind, her eyes tightly shut with a contented smile on her face, but her body was terrifyingly penetrated by numerous telephone wires.

By now, Yinglong was also nearly at his limit, his consciousness on the verge of collapse, the pain evident in the only eye left in his head.

"Help, help me..."

Yinglong hadn’t expected to see Han Fei at this moment. A confusing emotion surfaced in his murky, despairing eyes, a rare feeling that rekindled his strength despite being at his limit.

With his only functional arm, he grabbed the boy he was protecting and used his last bit of strength to throw the child out of the corpse pit!

Han Fei caught the child and took cover to the side, while the now insane Li Huo jumped directly into the pit, crazily biting and pulling at the bodies below. However, all the harm seemed to end up affecting Yinglong’s body.

"The telephone wires must be acting as a bridge, spreading the damage. We can only break the curse by attacking the cursed item itself!"

Li Huo had lost control, crying as he looked around. Right now, Han Fei could only rely on the Paperman.

Opening his item bar, Han Fei took out the blood-colored Paperman.

Blood flowed, and he hoped the Paperman would burrow deep into the pile, but it just looked up at him with a smiling face.

The Paperman’s self-awareness had been destroyed; now it was just an empty shell.

Recalling Xu Qin’s words, a vision of her eerily beautiful face came to Han Fei’s mind, overlapping with the face of the Paperman, and a dense, bloody smell wafted around them.

"Go to the deepest part of the corpse pile! Check what those bodies are really protecting!"

The bleeding Paperman seemed to understand Han Fei’s words, and it staggeringly walked towards the pit, its smile becoming increasingly grotesque and eerie.

This was the first time Han Fei truly tried to control the Paperman. During the process, his brain felt as if it was being pricked by needles. The horrific experiences of the blood-colored Paperman pounded his memories, as if ready to merge with him at any moment.

Han Fei finally understood the use of Brain Power—if his initial level wasn’t high, he wouldn’t have been able to control the Paperman for an extended period.

As soon as the blood-colored Paperman appeared, the atmosphere in the guesthouse instantly changed from what it had been before.

The smell of decay was suppressed by the smell of blood, and something within the pile of corpses couldn’t move; it could only watch as the blood-colored Paperman crawled through the gaps between the bodies into the depths of the corpse pile.
