Chapter 99: Chapter 20 Jiang Shan and Jiang Liang_2
Lin Xiaoguai nodded, "The canteen brought in a batch of cows, and they’re selling the tripe in the vegetable market. I saw it was fresh, so I bought some to take back. I’m not fond of this stuff, but you have to eat it all."
In fact, not just tripe, but any kind of animal offal she didn’t really like to eat.
Speaking of this, she began feeding Little Niangao – one spoonful of rice paste with one spoonful of vegetables – lately, he’d been drinking less milk, and though he wasn’t ready for rice, he was eating more and more vegetables, like today’s braised eggplant and fish head tofu soup which he could have.
What relieved Lin Xiaoguai was that her son wasn’t a fussy eater. Thinking back, she had several nephews and nieces who needed chasing around during meals, and she couldn’t recall how much of a headache that was.
You wouldn’t believe it, but Shen Chi actually really enjoyed eating tripe, devouring it one chopstick-full after another, quickly finishing the small plate, whereas more than half of the sweet and sour ribs were left.
She had no choice, Shen Chi and most people of the time preferred fatty meat. Even if the sweet and sour ribs were well-seasoned, they didn’t win his affection, and in the canteen, he chose this dish because Lin Xiaoguai liked it.
This meal, Shen Chi ate especially much. Afterward, he rubbed his stomach saying, "The next three days are going to be tough."
"How so, is the food not good during your exercises?" Lin Xiaoguai frowned slightly.
"Compressed biscuits, lunch meat, those were fine before, but now I’ve grown somewhat unaccustomed to them," Shen Chi explained. He was mostly happy to enjoy Wanwan’s excellent cooking and generosity with food and clothing, but occasionally it caused him a bit of distress.
Upon hearing this, Lin Xiaoguai glanced at him, "You’re just being picky."
Shen Chi wasn’t annoyed and chuckled, "You’ll have to make it up to me when I get back."
Lin Xiaoguai didn’t want to bicker and went back to her room to bring out a palm-sized box for him, "Take these."
"What’s this? You can’t bring things in there, and at that time..." Shen Chi thought she wanted him to smuggle something and was about to object but saw that inside the box were five plasters, "What are these?"
Two green and three white plasters without any branding, they were truly no-name products.
"I prepared these for you a while ago, just didn’t think of them until now. The green ones are trauma ointment, and the white ones are Golden Sore Ointment. Use the trauma ointment for bruises without broken skin, and the Golden Sore Ointment for cuts," Lin Xiaoguai explained calmly.
"Did you make these yourself?" Shen Chi recalled how grandma had praised Wanwan back at home, capable of gardening, making medicine, sewing clothes... she sounded like she could do anything, and though he thought grandma was just fond of her at the time, could it be there was some truth to her words?
Lin Xiaoguai nodded, "Take them for emergencies." She knew the military would likely have such supplies, but she believed hers worked better.
Shen Chi’s eyebrows lifted, the joy in his eyes clearly revealing his delight.
"Thank you, Wanwan." He hugged Lin Xiaoguai quickly and released her before she could resist, saying, "No need for more words, don’t worry about me. Just take care of the house."
After checking over the house’s doors, windows, and electrical outlets to be sure there were no safety hazards, Shen Chi left for the barracks.
After lulling her son to sleep, Lin Xiaoguai went to the living room balcony, took out a flowerpot from her space, and began to fill it with soil and plant flowers.
When she stood up after being busy for a while, she noticed it had become dark. Her gaze reached the quiet inside of the room, and she sighed, feeling an inexplicable sense of emptiness.
But quickly, Little Niangao’s cries pulled her back from her strange mood, and Lin Xiaoguai hurriedly washed her hands to dress her awakening son.
Wu Ermei arrived just as Lin Xiaoguai finished washing her son’s hair, with the little guy rolling excitedly on the sofa.
"I’m sorry to bother you so late. The boys were so excited to hear you had a color TV that they insisted on coming over. They were rushing me even while I was washing dishes," Wu Ermei said apologetically, handing over the hawthorn cake in her hand, "This came from my parents’ house. Let the children eat it while watching TV."
Lin Xiaoguai looked at the two children, who appeared uneasy in a strange place. When she looked at them, their faces turned red, but their glances toward the color TV revealed their inner desire.
Furthermore, Lin Xiaoguai just realized that these two brothers were actually identical twins – that made sense since how could a soldier possibly have more children than allowed.
Wu Ermei pushed her sons standing behind her toward Lin Xiaoguai, "This is my older son, Jiang Shan, and the second son, Jiang Liang. Don’t be fooled by their shyness now; they’re usually mischievous monkeys always causing me headaches."
She knocked on their heads, saying, "Say hello to Aunt Lin."
"Hello, Aunt Lin," the two children said in weak, timid voices.
"Hello, you two." Lin Xiaoguai took two handfuls of milk candies from the plate on the coffee table and gave them to the children.
In those days, milk candies were a treat. The kids looked to Wu Ermei, and upon seeing no objection in her expression, they happily accepted them.
After turning on the TV to a cartoon channel for the children, Lin Xiaoguai looked at her son, who was curiously eyeing the new brothers from the sofa, feeling a bit worried.
"Don’t worry, my two monkeys might be mischievous, but they never bully the new kids," Wu Ermei said, noticing Lin Xiaoguai’s concern.
"It’s not about bullying," Lin Xiaoguai smiled and said, "I’m worried he might get too excited playing with Xiao Shan and Xiao Liang and roll off the sofa." Especially with a coffee table nearby, if he hit his head...
Wu Ermei realized, and sternly told her sons, "Did you hear Auntie? You must watch your little brother and not let him get hurt."
"Yes, Mommy." Perhaps the sight of the color TV changed their attitude, and unlike before, the brothers confidently assured her with a pat on their chests.
