Chapter 415: Chapter 30 Travel
Lin Xiaoguai had always been in good health, although at the beginning of her marriage, she suffered from a high fever coma and a near miscarriage, but since then, she hadn’t fallen seriously ill. Whenever the seasons changed and she caught a cold, she would simply add an extra blanket over herself to sweat it out, and all would be well.
Today, however, was quite serious.
Shen Chi wasn’t panicking, but he was a little scared.
He quickly brushed his teeth and washed his face, then rummaged through the family medicine box, took out the thermometer, and checked Lin Xiaoguai’s body temperature—38 degrees. He sighed in relief; the problem wasn’t serious.
After some hesitation, he decided not to take her to the hospital. It was too cold outside, and going to the hospital would mean changing clothes and washing up, which could be more trouble than it was worth, compared to resting at home.
But he still wasn’t at ease, so he called Mrs. Zhang to come over to keep an eye on her and instructed her to periodically check Wanwan’s body temperature, and to take her to the hospital immediately if her temperature rose.
If it weren’t for an important meeting at the Military Department today, he would have preferred to stay and take care of her himself.
"Daddy, where’s mommy? Why isn’t mommy getting up yet?" Shen Chi was just about to go downstairs when he saw the door of the next room open and Little Spring Breeze peeked out his head.
Shen Chi had a headache; right, there were kids too.
"Little Spring Breeze, get back into bed quickly, or you might get sick," he first coaxed his son back, then called Jian’an to look after the quadruplets while he himself went downstairs to make a phone call to Zhi Xin Garden.
When Luo Yufang heard that his granddaughter-in-law was ill, he didn’t hesitate and agreed to come over with Mrs. Yu to pick up the kids, leaving the gift shop in the care of Shen Zhangming and Shen Mincheng.
By the time he had arranged everything, Shen Chi didn’t even have time for breakfast. He grabbed two steamed buns that Mrs. Zhang had made and left the house.
Lin Xiaoguai slept in late that day. When she woke up, it was already noon. Seeing Mrs. Zhang sitting by the bedside, she paused and asked, "What time is it?"
"Eleven o’clock. Would you like to eat something, ma’am?" Mrs. Zhang asked as she helped her sit up.
Lin Xiaoguai touched her stomach, feeling not the least bit hungry, but after thinking it over, she nodded and said, "Is there any porridge? If there is, serve me a bowl." She did remember she had a fever, but now her head didn’t feel as dizzy as it did in the morning; she just felt too lazy to move.
"There is. I’ve made some plain porridge, I’ll go get it for you," Mrs. Zhang replied and left the room.
Lin Xiaoguai took the thermometer from the side and measured her temperature. It was back to normal now. Well, her body had been through years of the Wash Marrow and Cut Tendons regimen, so her recovery was naturally strong. She didn’t suffer from the recurrent fevers that afflicted others, especially since Shen Chi had added an extra blanket for her. Having sweated out a fever, she indeed felt much more comfortable.
The only regret was that she couldn’t bathe now, or the illness might return, so she had no choice but to endure it.
"Ma’am, we have some pickled cucumbers that were just brought back from the farm. Would you like to have some with your porridge, or should I fry a couple of sunny-side-up eggs for you?" Mrs. Zhang came back, holding a tray.
"No, don’t bother. The pickled cucumber with porridge is just fine," Lin Xiaoguai hurriedly shook her head.
The porridge, made from new rice, was fragrant and sticky, tempting even the previously appetite-less Lin Xiaoguai. After having half a bowl, she asked, "Mrs. Zhang, where are Sisi and the others?" Though she wasn’t very worried, since Shen Chi knew she was sick, he would have taken care of everything before leaving.
As expected, Mrs. Zhang replied, "The master called the elder madam to come over and pick up the young master and miss, while your shop was left for the elder master and the senior master to look after."
The ’elder master’ and ’elder madam’ were actually Shen Zhangming and Luo Yufang. The situation was somewhat amusing because there were two older generations above them, making titles somewhat complicated.
’Senior master’ and ’senior madam’ were already excellent titles, but with Shen Mincheng in the picture, those weren’t enough. One couldn’t possibly call out ’senior master,’ ’more senior master,’ and ’most senior madam,’ could they? That would be too awkward.
Before Lin Xiaoguai thought of a good solution, Shen Zhangming and Luo Yufang were already feeling uncomfortable. They had been humble country folk all their lives, and suddenly, they had acquired status. How could they adjust? Although their granddaughter-in-law had said it was just a matter of address, that the housekeepers were like hired employees and were not to be disrespected or ordered around at will, the title also represented respect and wasn’t about exploiting them.
Yet the elders wouldn’t listen, insisting that Mrs. Zhang and Mrs. Yu change the way they addressed them. And so, in the household with such dignified titles as ’master’ and ’madam,’ there ended up being two other terms, ’elder master’ and ’elder madam,’ which sat oddly alongside the former.
