Chapter 407: Chapter 26 Ashen-faced

"What!?" Xu Ji’s eyes widened in disbelief.

Zheng Cuicui gently touched his head and softly said, "Zhang Jian has manic syndrome, so according to the law, he doesn’t need to face execution; he just needs to be sent to a psychiatric hospital for treatment."

A satisfied smile spread across Han Shouzhen’s face; the resolution of this issue had finally allowed her to breathe a sigh of relief.

In contrast to her, however, Xu Ji felt downhearted. He didn’t doubt that the elders would deceive him about such a matter, but events like these always left him feeling as if he had punched cotton.

"You should have listened to me earlier," Shouzhen said to her son with a smug look in her eyes, but she soon spoke earnestly, "It’s thanks to your reminder that instead of looking for volunteers at hospitals everywhere, like we did before, we should approach death row inmates in prison. I believe with a generous compensation, many would be willing to provide some security for their living relatives."

Xu Ji seemed distracted, and after a moment of hesitation, he ventured, "What about Zhang Jian’s sister..."

Everyone was taken aback, and Han Shouzhen suggested, "How about I cover the expenses for Zhang Xin’s eye treatment?" Although she was somewhat reluctant, she was not lacking in money, but she was unwilling to spend more until her son’s problem was resolved.

No one contested her offer, as after all, it was Xu Ji who had brought this trouble upon them.

Yet Xu Ji seemed unsatisfied, "What about later? Once Zhang Jian goes to the psychiatric hospital, how will his sister live on her own?"

The adults exchanged frowns, and Shen Chi gestured to him, "Ping’an, come outside with me."

They had perhaps been too indulgent with the boy because of his heart condition, resulting in him being clever but naive about the ways of the world, which made him seem tactless when faced with such issues.

Though Xu Ji was puzzled, he obediently followed.

Watching the two of them leave, Lin Xiaoguai looked at Han Shouzhen and said, "Sister, let’s get one thing straight, if Ping’an ends up crying after being talked to, you can’t get upset."

In fact, Shen Chi had long noted an issue with Ping’an’s temperament, but due to concerns for his health, he had hesitated to intervene. Now, however, seemed to be a rare opportunity.

Han Shouzhen wasn’t foolish and was well aware of the issue with her son. At Lin Xiaoguai’s words, she merely shook her head, not wanting to make a fuss. Even though she had married Wan Quan, she always had Ping’an call him "uncle" instead of "dad." Plus, given her intense focus on her son, Wan Quan, though affectionate towards Ping’an, hardly dared to discipline him. A boy lacking his father’s guidance was sure to miss something.

Without going into how tearful Xu Ji was upon returning with Shen Chi, or how guilty he looked when facing Han Shouzhen, the matter seemed to be put to rest for now. The next issue was to expedite the search for a heart donor volunteer.

With winter setting in and Lin Xiaoguai having restocked the shop with more tonics and health pills, the business at the gift shop improved even more.

"Boss, are you really not selling Cordyceps?" asked a regular customer for the third time.

Lin Xiaoguai shook her head, apologizing, "You see, we mostly sell processed products here. If you want medicated wine made with Cordyceps, we definitely have it, but just the Cordyceps itself... That’s a raw material. If we make an exception once, we’ll run into trouble with future business."

The customer sighed heavily and left.

Lin Xiaoguai did not try to persuade him further.

Lately, there had been many customers coming to the shop with similar intentions, and she understood what they were after.

Indeed, the medicinal herbs used for brewing wine in the shop were of the finest quality, and some people had the idea of buying these herbs as gifts. Naturally, presenting whole herbs seemed more generous and impressive than chopped ones infused in wine.

There had been suggestions to not chop the herbs when brewing to make the product more visually appealing, but Lin Xiaoguai had vetoed the idea. She was selling the medicinal benefits, not the appearance. If it wasn’t necessary, why should she bother to chop the herbs and make her job harder?

"Mommy, mommy, something terrible happened, Big Brother is fighting with someone," said Qiaoqiao, running in breathlessly, her little face flushed as she spoke.

Lin Xiaoguai paused, "Little Spring Breeze is fighting with whom?"

"An old man." After a pause, Qiaoqiao added, "An ugly old man."

Lin Xiaoguai frowned and quickly called upstairs to ask Grandpa to watch the shop, then she picked up Qiaoqiao and headed out.

She wasn’t that worried; after all, in Zhi Xin Garden, the likelihood of her son being bullied was really low, and the staff on the estate were not to be trifled with.

"Where’s Mrs. Yu?" she asked, walking briskly in the direction her daughter had indicated.
