Chapter 179: Chapter 14 Han Kuang’s Memories
Han Shouzhen did not notice her father’s reaction; her gaze was coldly fixed on Liu Yuzhi, "There’s another thing that I’ve been unable to understand over these years, and I hope you can answer me."
She pursed her lips, the corners drawing up in a sneer, "Why did my mother know about your existence initially?"
Just as Han Kuang caught his breath, he suddenly looked up, "What do you mean?"
Han Shouzhen continued, "My mother was always an open-hearted person. If she hadn’t been made aware of your existence and become defensive, she would never have hidden the Han Family’s wealth. Your existence—it certainly wouldn’t have been my father who told my mother. I had thought it was my mother’s old subordinates who revealed it to her. After all, those involved in intelligence tend to be more informed. But later I realized that couldn’t be right; when she was unwell, even if her old subordinates knew of your existence, they definitely wouldn’t have told her and aggravated her condition."
"Then, who revealed your existence to my mother?" Han Shouzhen’s gaze was piercingly cold, "Otherwise, how could my mother have later forgotten to take her medication due to her restlessness, and eventually get pregnant unexpectedly, which resulted in major health deterioration after giving birth to Shoulu, leading to her death a few years later?"
It wasn’t that she harbored any discontent toward Shoulu, but whenever she thought about how her mother’s death was caused by someone, anger continuously churned inside her.
As Liu Yuzhi was about to speak, Han Shouzhen cut her off, "Don’t bother with those pretty words. I didn’t come here without doing anything. I’ve questioned all of my mother’s old subordinates and her doctors back then. As my mother had already had me and my brother by then, the doctors, when prescribing traditional medicine, did not have to worry about her getting pregnant. Several of the medicines would have prevented pregnancy as long as she was taking them. Clearly, it was the shock of learning about your existence that made her neglect her medication, leading to everything that followed."
"I, I didn’t," Liu Yuzhi was flustered, glancing unconsciously toward Dong Fei but receiving no cues.
Seeing her reaction, how could Han Kuang not understand what was going on? He closed his eyes, feeling utterly heartsick, wondering what meaning he had left in this life?
Originally, wasn’t it because he thought his younger son had caused his wife’s death that he had lacked the will to fully search for him when the son went missing?
Later, just two months with no news, and he had given up. His wife had urged him with her dying breath to take good care of their younger son.
Back then, he had thought it was for the best, otherwise, he really didn’t know how to face this younger son whose existence led to his wife’s death, deciding instead to out of sight, out of mind.
But now, it turned out he was the root cause of all this.
Feeling a surge of distress, Han Kuang’s vision blanked out, and he collapsed.
The people in the room were taken aback, Han Shouxin being the first to react, rushing forward to support him, "Dad!"
"Dad!"
"Old master!"
Lin Xiaoguai had just poured water for Little Niangao and Nuonuo to drink when she heard a commotion outside.
"What’s going on?" Zheng Cuicui, already feeling uneasy, asked upon hearing the noise.
"I’ll go have a look." Lin Xiaoguai stood by the window and saw a group of doctors and nurses in white coats rushing out of the hospital toward a military jeep parked at the entrance.
"It appears some important figure has fallen ill and been hospitalized," Lin Xiaoguai turned back and said.
Zheng Cuicui felt increasingly anxious, though she couldn’t pin down why.
After sitting for a while, just as Little Niangao was fussing about going outside, they heard the nurses outside discussing.
"Did you hear? General Han Kuang was just rushed into the emergency room."
"I thought so, what a commotion!"
...
In the hospital room, besides Little Niangao who remained blissfully unaware, the three others widened their eyes.
"Mom!" Han Xinyu looked toward Zheng Cuicui, somewhat panicked.
She never really liked visiting her grandfather’s home, as there were people she disliked, but she was very fond of the grandfather who doted on her.
"Stay here, I’ll go check it out."
Lin Xiaoguai, unfamiliar with this hospital, first headed to the nurse’s station to inquire.
"Excuse me, which emergency room is General Han Kuang in now?"
The nurse glanced at her, mistaking her for one of those relatives who came just for the spectacle. Fortunately, hospital regulations weren’t so strict in this era, though the reply came in a not so pleasant tone, "At the end of the hallway on the fourth floor, Emergency Room Six."
Lin Xiaoguai didn’t bother to mind that, and turned to run upstairs.
Arriving on the fourth floor, Lin Xiaoguai quickly spotted Han Shouzhen and Han Shouxin outside the emergency room.
